Everyone has valid points on the Voyagers thing, I can see everyone's views on the hotly-discussed topic. No one has yet mentioned my preferred choice in the situation. Save £60 or avoid a Voyager, I know what the tight-fisted so and so in me would choose, but I'd throw my preferred option in there which is book a cheap flight if possible!

There was me thinking your preferred option would have been:

Diamonds, Dream Jars and....Thameslink!

Yet another trip to the Capital (Seems to be becoming a habit this year!) but in just over 48 hours I planned to:
See the Diamond League Athletics on Friday night
Go to at least on Football game on Saturday
See a friend at a Beer festival on Saturday morning.
Go to the Theatre
‘Red Line’ at least 15 new units in London (including a 387 and preferably a 387/2!)
Sleep!
So not much at all really!!!!

Friday 22nd July 2016
Anyway a familiar journey, but this time for a change it started with some ‘Tractor’ Thrash, DBSO 9707 leading 37401 for the journey round the coast to Lancaster. As usual the onward leg was via Birmingham, but no super voyagers this time as 390049 was provided for the journey south to London Town arriving on time at just after 13:30

I had seen a post on one of the other forums with the diagrams for the new Thameslink 700’s, and noted that what became the 14:24 southbound from St Pancras was now being worked by one, so even though the idea was to concentrate on the old units, I decided to try one out! After arriving at Euston, this meant a quick dash to the hotel taking 11077/11078 on the Victoria Line to Kings Cross so that I could pick up my Oyster card top up, dump my stuff and head over to St Pancras, arriving on Platform A just as 700109 was making its entrance. Boarding I easily found a seat even though as is usual for me on this trip was to be a one stop leap to Farringdon. First impressions, these are nice units, the seating arrangement is far better than the 3+2 on the Class 377/5’s it just a shame the seats are uncomfortable. Maybe I will change my mind after a longer trip! A short wait followed before 319423/319012 took me to City Thameslink, for 319425/319427 to London Blackfriars and 5 winners in less than half an hour! Time precious I took the underground, set 21424/21423 taking me to Embankment, for a walk through the gardens to Leicester Square via a refuelling stop at Weatherspoons and 183/146 back to Kings Cross. Athletics tonight at the Olympic Park, so only one way to travel and that’s by ‘Javelin’ so over to St Pancras again, aiming for the 17:50 as I knew that was diagrammed for 2 sets, though on arriving the 17:37 was formed of required 395026/395004 that took me the on the 6 minute trip to Stratford International and an evening in the company of Jess Ennis-Hill and Usain Bolt amongst others. Afterwards despite the best efforts of the stewards and being forced to walk back via Stratford to International, it was disappointing that my biggest dud 395, 395012 pulled in for the journey home. Still, a very enjoyable day!

Saturday 23rd July 2016
With a packed schedule planned for Saturday, any rail action would again have to be confined to Thameslink, as I am staying 2 minutes from St Pancras, and is convenient to the rest of my plans, and so it was 319443 taking me on the hop to Farringdon, for 377505/377522 onto City Thameslink. It is so much quieter on a Saturday in the City and the plan was to walk from here see some Dream Jars (From the BFG) via Tower Bridge through to London Bridge, though having seen 7 I hadn’t even made it to the Tower by the time I had hoped to be at London Bridge! Here I made mistake number 1 in boarding the circle line (I didn’t realise how dreadful the service is on here!) for Liverpool Street formed of 21463/21464. I had thought of doing the DLR to Shadwell and a 378 or 2 up to Shoreditch High Street for the short walk to Beer Market at Old Spitalfields and in fact, I just wish I had walked from the Tower it would have been far quicker! After a quick catch up with a friend, it was back on the circle and 21498/21497 back down to Blackfriars and more Thameslink. The idea had been to start another linear leap on the 12:24, which I only made as it was running 5 minutes late, and here was the second mistake of the day, in that this was formed by the return working of 377522/37505, which I took back to City Thameslink, for the following service formed of dud 377514/37506. As i now had a tad over 10 minutes to wait for the next northbound, I happened to look to the other platform and on the approach with the Brighton service was something RED! Could it be...? As it drew closer it was indeed a 387! So breaking all my rules about changing plans, (and probably some Oyster card ones too!) I made a quick sprint, (ok well maybe it was a fast walk at best aided by the 3 minute dwell) and I made it round with seconds to spare and so 387202/387129 took me back to City for the second time in just over 5 minutes, and had the honour of being the inaugural 387’s entered into my haulage book. Mistake 2 had been more than rectified! With time now pressing, after what felt like ages 319009 took me through to St Pancras, where like buses, a second pair of 387’s soon followed and it was off again on 387101/387112 to West Hampstead Thameslink. The afternoons destination was to be Barnet FC’s ‘The Hive’ stadium, so changing stations and mode, I headed for the Jubilee line and 96116/96101 for the onward journey. As I was heading to the penultimate station, I decided it would be rude not to go all the way to the end of the line, and not wanting to leave un-cleared a small section of track I took these through to Stanmore. After a very quick PNB, the same pair with 96101 now leading headed back to Canon’s Park and the short walk to the ground. This means I have now cleared the line in full except for the short section between West Hampstead and Swiss Cottage, so this will have to be rectified at some point soon. Though it was far too hot for football, another new ground was added to my ever growing list. For the rest of the night there were just a few underground trips as I went about a night out in London including the theatre
96019/96106 Canon’s Park to Wembley Park
21036/21035 Wembley Park to Kings Cross St Pancras
219/140 Kings Cross St Pancras to Leicester Square
194/129 Leicester Square to Kings Cross St Pancras

Sunday 24th July 2016
Not much time today before journey home so only a handful of moves and lots of walking picking up a number of Dream jars on the way, so in summary
125/128 Kings Cross to Leicester Square (For a very long walk!)
377210/377517 London Blackfriars to St Pancras International
11079/11080 Kings Cross to Euston
390154 Euston to Lancaster (via Birmingham)
156487 Lancaster to Barrow

So all in all not a bad haul for 48 hours and 9 minutes in London, the 390 home made it 15 winners, finally I had some 387’s including /2 in the book and a good few 319’s before they move on to pastures new.

Total Winners – 15 plus 19 underground half sets
Total Miles - 577
New Shacks – 1 plus 3 underground
Winning Football Grounds – 1

Is so much to do in London, and not enough time to do it! Certainly I don't have time to do more than a mini-bash at a time either though maybe when there is a rainy day.....

Those dream jars look, well, odd to me. Clearly I'm not a norm or an appreciator of art!

Too much to do in London indeed, and it won't be long until we're all going down even more often for the new stuff coming in!

25/08/2016 – The Edinburgh Festival

To take advantage of Virgin Trains seat sale, I decided another trip to the Edinburgh Festival was in order so for the princely sum of £12 return tickets were booked from Lancaster to Edinburgh. The return from Barrow to Lancaster (all 34 miles!) cost £14 return!!!!! As I left home, local news were reporting severe delays on the WCML due to OHL problems tickets bought it was on with the show, as I boarded 185112 for the trundle round Morecambe Bay. Arriving at Lancaster the board was showing the 08:08 Edinburgh service on time (I travel on this service alot and that is a rarity in itself!) and the first winner of the day 390010 duly appeared in time for the trip north. As some may have gathered from a separate post, I was hoping to pick up my first Scotrail 156, and arriving into Waverley slightly ahead of the booked time of 10:22, I spied one sat in the bay platforms at the west end of the station. Already armed with a Haymarket return, I made my way over and boarded 156494 on the Glasgow via Shotts service. Now these are much nicer and more comfortable than the Northern ones! At Haymarket it was a short step over to the adjacent platform for 170451 to take me back into Waverley and onwards into the City. After taking in some shows, including a great hour in the company of ‘Likely Lad’ Rodney Bewes (Lovely Guy) I made it back to Waverley with the intention of doing the ‘cats’ up to South Gyle. Arriving for the 17:08, 68007 took me the mile or so to Haymarket, but whilst waiting for the following 17:20 I became somewhat distracted by the appearance of East Midlands Trains HST power car 43054 atop the 17:21 to Kings Cross (43295 bringing up the rear). Deciding this was too good an opportunity to miss, a quick hopeful dash was made across the station, boarding with plenty of time to spare, and so the second kitty was abandoned! One for another day!! A personal needs and food stop at Waverley later and the day was over all too soon, taking 221110 back to Lancaster for mega dud 153358/153378 for the long drag home! All in all a good day, I reduced my 390/0 requirement to 5, 7 winners from 3 TOC’s, 4 if you count DRS and some good (and not so good!) entertainment, though I really need to spend more time chasing trains and less on sight-seeing and other things!!!

A nice productive move, although my mind can't cope with the idea of rejecting a 68 to get a HST in ;)

Paid £10 seeing it was a friendly, still overpriced

Remember when Barnet and Barrow were in the Conference together, used to have some good games against them

Well I figure that potentially the cats will be around a lot longer then the trams, plus didn't know what the other cat was and didn't want a dud!

Not to mention turning down a VP185 in 2016 up in Edinburgh is difficult to do, I'd have had to go for it myself!

Certainly you got quite a bit in on the trip, despite it being a sightseeing trip!

London 11th to 13th November 2016.
Having not been out for some time now except on regular trips for work that have yielded very little, (Surprising when you still require so much on your home turf) it was off on one of my regular trips south. Although the main reason for the trip again was football, the intention was to try and spend as much time as I could chasing the ‘old’ order on Thameslink before the 700’s finally take over completely! So armed with a timetable marked up with the 700 diagrams (Ones to avoid, for the simple reason I want to clear out my existing requirements whilst I still can)

Friday 11th November
Boarding 156443 on the 07:14 Barrow to Lancaster, before my usual London ‘Voyager’ move 221114 / 221117 to the Capital, after checking in at my hotel it was straight over to St Pancras where fortunately services were now almost back to normal after the disruption all week. Rather than go into detail, I have just listed the moves and commented where appropriate.

319003 St Pancras International to Farringdon
377215 / 377508 Farringdon to City Thameslink
387113 City Thameslink to Blackfriars
319373 / 319453 Blackfriars to City Thameslink
387102 / 387103 City Thameslink to Farringdon
377503 / 377510 Farringdon St Pancras International
128/125 Kings Cross to Leicester Square
106/239 Leicester Square to Kings Cross
218/191 Kings Cross to Leicester Square
219/112 Leicester Square to Kings Cross

Saturday 12th November
An early start for the Lord Mayor’s flotilla, and another trip on yesterday’s pair of 377215 / 377508 between St Pancras International and Blackfriars. After braving the dreadful weather, it was back up to St Pancras on 319215 for a few fill in moves until the start of the Lord Mayors show itself given the pouring rain as follows

319435 / 319459 St Pancras International to Farringdon
319220 Farringdon to City Thameslink (Had seen this heading north as St Pancras so having worked diagram out made sure I got it on its return as only one 319/2 now required)
377210 / 377502 City Thameslink to Blackfriars (For the Lord Mayors Show)

51568/51569 Bank to Kings Cross
377514 / 377512 St Pancras International to Blackfriars
319001 Blackfriars to West Sutton (Via Wimbledon)
Football at Sutton United for a winning ground.
319003 West Sutton to St Pancras International (via Sutton)

Sunday 13th November 2016
A later start for 240/111 on the Piccadilly line form King’s Cross to Leicester Square, avoiding the large crowds after a walk around Covent Garden and across to the south of the river using the bridge alongside Charing Cross, i eventually made my way to Blackfriars for the 12:08 back up to St Pancras so I could collect my luggage and head back to Euston for the train home, I arrived on the platform ten minutes before its due departure formed of 377501 / 377521. I had seen these on Friday but had been unable to cross platforms at St Pancras in time so was pleased to finally pick these up and reduce my 377/5 requirements to 5.

As has become the norm lately it was more dud traction home, 390122 up to Lancaster (via Birmingham) for mega dud 156463 home to Barrow in Furness

So overall I managed to clear over a quarter of my outstanding Thameslink units and with another 4 days in the capital next week i am hoping to be able to clear at least my remaining 377/5’s so hopefully they won’t quite have left, , though I apologise in advance for any TOPS requests I may make help me to do this, with thanks in advance!

Total Winners - 20
Total Miles - 596
New Shacks 2 New Football Grounds - 2 (121now in total)

Yeah considering I only started on Thameslink in May this year and I am not in London very regularly think I am down to about 40 of the current (exc 700's) fleet to clear. Hopefully a load more will bite the dust next week when I am down.

Lord Mayors show was ok, just spoilt by the torrential rain!

Certainly you're cracking on well there! I need more 377/5s than you by a fair margin, something which I need to correct in 2017

London Again!!! (21st to 24th November 2016)
My Poor Old Red Pen...!!!!!!
21st November 2016

My final trip of the year, and it is back south to London for my customary pre-Christmas visit to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night. Continuing my recent dreadful run on my home turf, with Northern providing 153328/156472 for the trudge round Morecambe Bay for 390104 south to London Euston (I was going direct for a change so the required Pendo was on the via Brum service not mine! Typical!). At the risk of sounding monotonous, the ‘Rail’ plan for the week was again Thameslink, having thought doing something different for a change, the fact that the 700’s are now rapidly taking over meant that this was the only option particularly with my main target being completing the Class 377/5’s before they move on. After checking into my usual base camp 30 seconds form Kings Cross, it was over to St Pancras, where I boarded 319008 through to London Blackfriars, to pick up what I knew were 377 diagrams, and dud 377512/377207 duly arrived for the linear leap to City Thameslink, with 377510/377513 up to Farringdon. Finally the return to St Pancras was aboard 319444. Whilst waiting earlier at St Pancras, I noticed my penultimate 319214 heading north to West Hampstead, so hoping I had worked out the diagram correctly, this should be heading back south just after I arrived back, which it duly did with partner 319421, and as time for today was now pressing this was taken through to Blackfriars before heading to the district line and to Embankment (21434/21433), heading to Weatherspoons for some much needed food, before a few evening trips on the Piccadilly line, 126/856 back to base camp before a return trip to Leicester Square, outward with 896/145 returning on 164/131 for a night at the theatre. All in all a disappointing start to the week on the winner front. Things can only get better!

22nd November 2016
An early start, following a full English Breakfast, saw me on the platform at St Pancreas before 08:30. First up was 319438/319008 taken down to Farringdon, before the days first 377 action, 377502/377504 to City Thameslink, and a dud pairing of 319435/319425 into London Blackfriars. Normally I would have ignored these and waited to see if there was anything required following, but in order to pick up the required service at Blackfriars, I wasn’t in a position to do so. Moving over to Platform 2, to await a brace of 377’s, and first to appear was the required pair of 377214/377516 to City Thameslink. Its only 116 chains, but more than enough for a red line in the book! Unfortunately the second pair was yesterday’s 377513/377510, so just some mileage accumulation to Farringdon completing the days Thameslink moves with the required pair of 319439/319381 back to St Pancras. Following the death of my trusty camera on the Monday night, todays plan was to head up to Stratford Westfield’s to locate a cheap replacement at Argos, as usual my mode of transport is the “Javelin” and required 395023 for the six minute hop to Stratford International. This leaves me with 13 required, and hopefully i will make huge inroads into these next summer as I have tickets for several sessions of the Para and World Athletics Championships at the Olympic Stadium. After locating a cheap camera, and a PNB I decided it was time for a complete change, so whilst I headed back to Stratford International, this time I took the DLR platform, for winning units 10 and 85 to West Ham. In all my visits to London over the years, I have never been into Fenchurch Street, so it was more than time to rectify boarding 357037. As there was another service following 3 minutes behind I decided to bale at Limehouse for the shack scratch before 357006 took me into London Fenchurch Street for the first time. At this point, I wanted to head back to Central London, but rather than take the easy option of the tube, I made my way over in bracing conditions to the impressive looking London Bridge, looking forward to seeing it fully completed. Making my way to Platform 7, I was soon on my way to Charing Cross utilising 376001/376026, resisting the temptation to split the journey at Waterloo East in order to refuel. With an afternoon at Winter Wonderland (via Harrods!) planned, it was up to Leicester Square to take 146/139 on the Piccadilly to Knightsbridge, eventually making my back to Hyde Park Corner to take winning pair 206/862 back to base camp at Kings Cross. To complete a hectic day I had arranged to meet a friend near Marble Arch, so rather than take the tube all the way, I took the Piccadilly line yet again (155/184) before making my way on foot via the Christmas lights / shops in Regent Street and Oxford Street. Just as I was making my way to the meeting point, it was change of plan and my friend decided she wanted to meet at Kings Cross in 20 minutes!!!!!! Legging it down to the Central line, fortunately there was a train waiting, so a dash on board xxxxx/xxxxx/93436/91347 (The numbering on the Central confuses me though this is actually only the second time I have used a service on this line!) switching to the Victoria Line at Oxford Circus, on required set 11007/11008.

23rd November 2016
My last full day in London until at least late February 2017, so with only 3 377/5’s (or so I thought!) required, I set my alarm for the early hours of Wednesday morning and posted the details in the TOPS request thread to try and make the task easier. As yesterday, I was up early and on the platform at St Pancras just after 08:30. Working blind, the aim today was clear as much of my Thameslink requirements as possible. First up, 319010/319444 to Farringdon then winning pair 387115/387127 into City Thameslink. Finally for the third day running 377510/377513 took me up the hill into Blackfriars. Again over to the Northbound platform where 377505/377515 were just arriving. As I said above, I thought it was 3 of these outstanding. It actually turned out it should have been 4 as I had marked 513 down as 515 in error on Monday (My handwriting is shocking at times) so it was very fortunate that this could be rectified by the time we reached City Thameslink. 319011/319443 to Farringdon and by the time 319428/319002 arrived to take me back to St Pancras my red pen was working overtime! At this point for some reason I decided to take the next service to West Hampstead Thameslink, thinking it would be another pair of 377’s or 387’s so I was disappointed when dud pair 319001/319454 drew in. Carrying on with the ‘plan’ the journey north took what seemed like an eternity. On arrival I transferred over to the Jubilee line, taking 96011/96070 south to Bond Street. On arrival at Swiss Cottage, I completed the Jubilee line for track coverage though I still have 8 shacks outstanding, 7 of them north of Swiss Cottage. I may eventually get round to doing these but they are nowhere near even getting onto the ’Reserve’ list of things to do! From there I meandered along finding myself on the South Bank for a PNB and sustenance. Whilst I was finishing my coffee, i made another check on the forum and saw that 37078xotTE had very kindly answered my TOPS request and had posted the diagrams for my remaining 377/5’s. A closer inspection showed that these could all be done within an hour in the late afternoon, so I immediately cancelling all my plans for the afternoon (ok so I didn’t really have any plans to cancel!) and headed back to base camp. Making sure I was on the platform at St Pancras well in advance of the 15:34 to Sutton, it was now all about the final three with everything else being ignored, and the first of the 3 377519 duly arrived with its partner 377523 that I took all the way down to Blackfriars. At Blackfriars I had to wait for around 20 minutes but again taking no chances it was straight over to Platform 2. As scheduled my second required unit 377520/377209 drew in, with the added bonus of a winning /2 as well. Taking this to Farringdon, (I hate waiting too long at City). At this point it was all too much for my poor old red pen, and it promptly gave up. I settled down for the 17 minute fester for what should be the last one. After what seemed like forever, 377511 led in 377521. Even though the platform was packed, I made sure I took my place in the leading unit, and on arrival at St Pancras, the Class 377/5’s were awarded the prestigious ”Completed” status, the inaugural member in my haulage book! The red line being finally duly applied back at base camp with my substitute red pen. This wasn’t quite the end of the day as it was off to the football at the Emirates Stadium, trouble on the Piccadilly meant it was over to the Victoria line for another winner 11067/11068 to Finsbury Park and a walk up to the ground. Returning to avoid the crowds at Arsenal tube station it was back to Finsbury Park and the National Rail for 365511 back to Kings Cross

24th November 2016
My final day, as it was off home late afternoon. After yesterdays success I decided to leave the Thameslink today so after packing up base camp I was back at Kings Cross, waiting until the off-peak had kicked in, with 216/866 to Leicester Square. After collecting supplies, I headed to Charing Cross to pick up 376030/376010 to Waterloo East, baling for the following Dover service couple of minutes later formed of more winners 375624/375620 through to London Bridge. After eventually finding my way out of the station, I made my way slowly back along the South Bank resisting the temptation to have a look upstairs at Blackfriars to see what was around, ending up at the ‘Spoons in Leicester Square for a late lunch. Time now pressing it was back to base camp to collect my belongings, 167/222 doing the honours, before 11087/11088 took me back to Euston. A check of real time trains gave me the platform number long before it was announced, surprisingly there was already about a dozen in the queue so either the 16:30 to Glasgow always goes from here, or alot of people know about Real Time Trains! To continue the mega dud theme with Virgin, 390107 was waiting for the return to Lancaster with another 185124 home to Furness

The trouble with doing short periods of intense moves is that the “paperwork” takes longer to do than the moves themselves, in fact this report has taken longer to type up than I actually spent travelling in London. Once I was home, the haulage book (aka Excel Workbook) was updated and the numbers counted and verified, I can now reveal the numbers for this trip:

Total Winners – 31 (Plus 19 on LU and 2 DLR)
Total Miles – 572
New Shacks 3
LU Lines Completed – Jubilee

All in all a successful trip the highlight being completing the 377/5’s, the last 14 being cleared since 9th November, in only 4 days in London. The only disappointment being that 319217 managed to evade capture (my last 319/2) though I am sure it blew raspberries at me every time it passed going in the opposite direction!

So what next, really think its probably time i made inroads into the Northern stuff considering its my home territory, and must find my last 350/4 350407. London wise, I am not back down now until late February so plenty of time to decide, 319217 is still top of the hit list so hopefully it will still be on Thameslink by then. Otherwise there may be a clue in the latter moves, the 376’s look eminently doable on from Charing Cross and only 30 to go, or I am well on the way to clearing the LO 378’s so a few things to keep me occupied. One thing, they will still all be done in intensive bursts of short moves, there is too much to do in London to spend all day on the train – unless it’s a rainy one of course.

A very successful time all in down in London, normally I'd make a comment on how I'm jealous but I'm going tomorrow :D Only in the capital for 22 hours (including the night!) but it will be a nice little red pen fest!

Well done on clearing the 377/5s, one of which (377509) I still need for sight. Curious as to your choice of base camp, always on the lookout for new locations to set up camp on trips.

Hope you have a successful trip :)

I usually stay at the Belgrove in Argyle Street, just off Euston Road directly opposite Kings Cross station. Have stayed there quite a few times over the years now.

I must research this place. Chingy?

My own trip to London was very productive, and I thought I had my needs down to less than 2,000. Umm, no, my requirements file was completely wrong, which annoyed me a bit! Majorly thorough updates and cross-referencing needed!

Think its £45-50 a night. Get it cheaper by booking directly with them. Its adequate, rooms aren't oversized and bed is a bit short for me (am 6'6") but is clean convenient and has a good breakfast :)

A very successful few days in London, well done on the 377/5s :)
Thanks, wa sa good few days and pleased to get the 377/5's out of the way whilst they are still on Thameslink and easier to get! :)

Before I go into my first trip report of 2017, and having reviewed my 2016 stats, I have set the following targets for winners have been set for 2017 (All for Heavy Rail), so keeping it all in round figures! (2016 Totals in Brackets)

Mileage – 15,000 (13,088)

Winners – 400 (244)

Shacks -25 (21) (I don’t go in search of these, so this won’t be very high)

Football Grounds 10 (5)

After a very poor start to 2017, only 5 winners from my first 48 work journeys, despite still needing so much on my own territory, my first ‘proper’ trip of the new year took me to London. With not alot of time for the railway, and having now completed much of the old order on Thameslink (The 700’s can wait a while!), I decided to look for something different and having originally consider hitting South Eastern, decided to head east and started to draft a plan using a Zone 1-4 travel card when I had time spare on the Tuesday.

Anyway the trip started on Monday 6th March, with the usual 156 (156490 recording its 11th entry into the haulage log, for 390129 directly to London. After setting in at my Ranch for the week, it was off to Kings Cross for 153/182 on the Piccadilly line to pick up a theatre ticket and an early tea at the Wetherspoons. With a bit of time to spare I took the long way back to the Ranch, walking down to Embankment tube station to pick up 21433/434 to Blackfriars, and despite my comments above did a linear leap to St Pancras comprising
319437/319421 London Blackfriars to City Thameslink
700113 City Thameslink to Farringdon
700023 Farringdon to St Pancras International

Before a few tube rides to take me about my business that evening, 221/857 Kings Cross to Leicester Square, before going back from Tottenham Court Road to Euston aboard 51638/639 (Northern) for 11064/065 (Victoria) back to the ranch.

The Tuesday allowed me the most time to spend on the railway, so having purchased a Zone 1-4 anytime the previous night instead of using my Oyster, I made the short walk over to Kings Cross in good time to board the 08:17 Peterborough Service comprising 365524/365518 and made my way to Finsbury Park. The idea from here (and a poor one in the middle of rush hour!) was to do a linear leap to Moorgate, to put some 313’s in the book whilst I still can, and whilst I knew these would be busy, I wasn’t expecting them to be so busy! A decision was soon made to abandon the leap at Drayton Park and see what happened. With hindsight I would have been better starting at Moorgate and going north, but this meant wasting time doubling back on myself but in the event I was soon back on track and picked up 8 313’s as follows.

313040/313046 Finsbury Park to Highbury and Islington
313122/313051 Highbury and Islington to Essex Road
313038/313039 Essex to Old Street
313029/313064 Old Street to Moorgate

Somehow I don’t think I will be rushing to do this again as in all it wasn’t a pleasant experience and I was pleased I only had a few minutes to wait at each station, though I may well pick Drayton Park up going north again as soon as time allows and hopefully add a couple more 313’s to the haulage book. From Moorgate, the plan was to head east so off to the Underground and 21091/092 leading the next service for the short hop to Liverpool Street. Missing Drayton Park out meant I was ahead of Schedule, so it was off to Platform 10 with about 90 seconds to spare and a triple 321 Nos 319, 343 and 316 on the 09:13 Southend service which was taken to Stratford. (For all the times I have been to the Olympic Park this was the first time I had used Stratford instead of International. The plan from here was to score some TfL rail 315’s before they start to be replaced with Cross Rail stock, so four very short moves and 8 were in the book!

315861/315859 Stratford to Maryland
315841/315825 Maryland to Stratford
315838/315840 Stratford to Maryland
315855/315827 Maryland to Stratford

Before another pair of 321’s, 317 and 320 took me back to Liverpool Street. From here, I needed to head to the South Bank, so it was back underground 21025/026 taking me to Farringdon, splitting the trip to Blackfriars 319437 from yesterday taking me to City, for 700112 to Blackfriars. Walking along the South Bank, Westminster Bridge and into Trafalgar Square the intention was to eat in Wetherspoons again (Steak Night!) then over to Charing Cross for a couple linear leap returns to London Bridge. In the event I was distracted and spent half an hour in the Square watching Ant and Dec filming for Britain’s Got Talent 2017, when I eventually arrived at Charing Cross I found all services had been suspended due to a security alert at London Bridge. Annoyed that I had missed out on up to 20 South Eastern Winners, I eventually made my way down to Blackfriars, as I had an appointment with 319007 thanks to information on the TOPS request thread from 37078xotTE. So taking 21479/480 from Embankment to Blackfriars, it was yet another linear leap up to St Pancras as follows

319220/319430 London Blackfriars to City Thameslink
700114 City Thameslink to Farringdon
319421/319007 Farringdon to St Pancras International

Tuesday night was football night, so taking an early Piccadilly service 244/111 up to Arsenal, enough said, and having been disappointed not to get a 317 earlier in the morning the day ended with a pair 317339/317343 from Finsbury Park back to London Kings Cross

Originally the plan for Wednesday didn’t involve any rail activity but after being awake very early and having had breakfast I found myself with time on my hands so headed over to the Thameslink platforms at St Pancras in search of ‘Brighton’, and didn’t have to wait long! Having let the first 700 pass by in an effort to collect some 319’s on the very next service Brighton was on the rear! This being my last 319/2 except for 216 on London Midland so very pleased to have cleared this one, before heading to see amongst other things Tim Peake’s capsule in the Science Museum. For the record the morning moves were:

319003/319217 St Pancras International to Farringdon
319446/319428 Farringdon City to Thameslink
700112 City Thameslink to London Blackfriars
21501/502 Blackfriars to Embankment (District)
251/148 Leicester Square South Kensington (Picc)
Further rain in the afternoon left me with time to at least pick up a few South Eastern units so having made it to Charing Cross it was time for another linear leap, and 5 new winners.

162/131 South Kensington to Hyde Park Corner (Picc)
108/233 Knightsbridge to Covent Garden (Picc)
465167/465191/466030 London Charing Cross to Waterloo East
375925/375821 Waterloo East to London Bridge

Rain having subsided, I walked back to Blackfriars (via Pret) to get back to base camp.
319373 London Blackfriars to Farringdon
700025 Farringdon to St Pancras International

Again several tube moves on a night out in the centre,
203/150 Kings Cross to Leicester Square (Picc)
51572/573 Leicester Square to Euston (Northern)
51628/629 Euston to Kings Cross (Northern)

As I was travelling home on Thursday lunch time, no time for anything but a quick trip into Central London 184/155 Kings Cross to Covent Garden and having seen most of the Royal family on their way to Horseguards 892/245 Green Park to Kings Cross, collect luggage and waked back to Euston for another dud Pendolino, 390107 to Preston before finally a Northern (well TPE in disguise) winner in 185147 to Barrow (Thats halfway on these now!)

Summary of the Week
Winners - Network Rail 40 No, plus 23 Underground half sets
New Shacks - 5 No
Mileage - 561 miles

You may wish to check that one move from Blackfriars to City Thameslink, no 312s exist anymore ;)

A rather productive time nonetheless though, and it looks like your goals for 2017 are quite reasonable. If I wanted to go to London earlier, I REALLY want to go now!

Oops corrected now!

It was, I hope they are, the football grounds will be the hardest one I think! I have 5 more trips to London before the end of August plus 1 to Glasgow courtesy of the Virgin Seat sale so hopefully will make big inroads into the traction winners on those trips.

For a change, I will just write this up in summary, so Friday 31st March saw me heading south for the second time in 3 weeks, to the usual base camp near Kings Cross, with no other rail action other than a Charing Cross to Waterloo East Bus Stop move, and a return to base on the Thameslink core. Today brought only 3 winners - 390130, 375808, 375705 and 700009.

Saturday saw the main purpose of the trip, and new territory for me, first of all heading from London Victoria to Maidstone East, After a couple of hours exploring before an afternoon at the football (enough said! Haha) it was back to London this time from Maidstone West to Strood, before going High Speed back to St Pancras. Although I have used the ‘Javelins’ on many occasions this was the first time at speed, and I must say, I was very impressed, even if the unit provided wasn’t required! Only 2 winners today, 375906 and 375307, plus the 3 winning Shacks.

Sunday was spent in and around London, with a new football ground at Fisher, before spending the evening in St James Park watching filming for the new ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ film. Still 4 winners, 375822, 375715, 378216 and 378138, and a winning shack at Rotherhithe

Monday morning and after packing for home there was time for a trip down the core and 6 319’s, though only the one winner 3193449, before heading back to Euston and back north, winning 156459 taking me back round Morecambe Bay and back home.

Wednesday 5th April saw me out and about again, but this time the main mode of transport being the car! This was out of necessity due to the poor service from Lancaster to Skipton, but earlier than I had anticipated I was boarding my first ever 333, 333002 for the short trip to Keighley. Transferring over to the Worth Valley railway platform and a wait of just over an hour before taking my first steam locomotive of the year, 4F 43924 up to Haworth. Another wait, before the main purpose of the journey, as 60103 ’ Flying Scotsman’ duly arrived, taking the short trip to Oxenhope for a photography stop, before 8F 90733 took the train (Scotsman tailing) back to Keighley, 60103 then returning the train to Haworth (with banking assistance from 90733). From there it was back to Keighley behind 43924 and 333010 back to Skipton. After a great meal at “Bizzie Lizzie’s” it was time for the long drive back – I would much rather have been sat on a train instead of driving

Summary of the Week
Winners - Network Rail 17 (Inc 3 Steam Locos), plus 18 Underground half sets
New Shacks – 4 No
Mileage - 666 miles
New Football Grounds – 2 No
