Good grief I hope not, I was on on 166205 yesterday and all the standard class seats were even more disgusting than last time I was on that unit.

They're all stained or marked in some way and I went and sat in first class in the end (class 2 stopping service thankfully, so no actual first class)

If I ever get this unit on a class 1 I will stand in the vestibule.
Surely being a class 2 service doesn't automatically declassify first-class? Unless class 2 means something than what I think it means.

Isn't one end of first declassified anyway on 166s?

Not so, I'm afraid. SWT and Thameslink offer First on stopping 2xxx services. I assume the same is true of other TOCs with a mixed express and local fleet.

Yes, that's what I thought. I am also pretty sure that Tattenham Corner semi-fasts are 1xxx but are standard-class only (mainly 455-operated).

I think it's just a coincidence on that particular GW route. They have two calling patterns, one has first class and one doesn't, and they also fortuitously happen to run with class 1 and class 2 headcodes.

In other words the timetable still defines whether the particular train has first or not:

I was on 158956 today for the first time since the refurb and was impressed with how it looks externally - The new livery works really well on the 158s in my opinion (better than the 150s).

Interestingly in Carriage C, the Richmond seats have been replaced with the original BR seats. I'm still not a massive fan on the astroturf green on the seat backs however. I really like the new CIS boards too.

In less positive news, the CIS had got stuck at an earlier station so it just kept displaying "Great Western Railway welcomes you aboard this service to Cardiff Central Please do not attempt to board or alight from the train when the doors are closing" and there were no audio announcements.

Also, one of the external doors was taped over with yellow and black hazard tape, indicating a fault.

The air con had also failed.

In which vehicle has the Universal Toilet been fitted and has one toilet been removed - if so from which vehicle?

Most class 2 (2Vxx & 2Oxx Redhill stopper) on the North Downs are automatically declassified (& 1st not advertised in timetable) and should always be run with a 165. I almost always see a 166 during the week though.

There are a few exceptions to this (peak/late evening Gatwick stopper)

Apparently the present toilet has had improvements made but it is compliant ?

Presumably baby changing facilities have been reinstated ? They were ripped out due to safety concerns years ago

I wonder where these BR seats come from ? Never understood the two types of seating issue. Richmond seats are pretty dire in my opinion as the seat bases frequently fall off and the springs poke through after a while

I heard a new air-con system yet to be fitted?

SX Diagrams:

There is only one 165 diagram on the North Downs (Class 2: Reading - Shalford - Reading in the morning and late afternoon).

All the other N Down diagrams are for 166s and come the new LTP period in September even the Shalford trips are diagrammed for a 166.

I would have expected that from the October 2015 timetable change when the stoppers were all declassified, that 165s would have been diagrammed for all of those (I'm glad they haven't by the way, as I use Betchworth!). 165s turn up about every ten days or so on random workings on the route, with even a 2 car version the other day.

I didn't have a look in the other carriages of 158956 as the train was very busy. Carriage C had an accessible toilet though. Due to the future provision to run them as 2 carriage units again, I don't imagine any toilets have been removed(?)

I few months ago I saw a 165 on Gatwick Express services, and 166s on the Redhill stopper and the Basingstoke line...:|

Thanks, I knew the Shalford stopper was always a 165 (though only in the past 9 months has it been a 3 car) but I didn't know there was no other diagram during the week for a 165.

A 165 always turns up on a Saturday morning on a Redhill stopper though.

A 165 always turns up on a Saturday morning on a Redhill stopper though.

Saturdays see 3, self contained Redhill stopper diagrams, 2 of which are covered by 3/165s, the 3rd is formed off one of the 3/166 sets that spend the night at Redhill. Diagrams as follows:

RG306 diagram comes off the TCD as the rear part of a 5 car (the front 2 continue ECS to Maidenhead to work Marlows) and then goes on to work 2O27 (via the Low Level) / 2V53/2O32/2V58/2O38/2V62/2O42/2V67/2O49 and 2V72 before returning empty to TCD via Spur Jn (Rev) and the Low Level

RG309 diagram comes ECS from the TCD via the Low Level and Spur Jn (Rev) it then works 2O28/2V54/2O34/2V59/2O39/2V63/2O44/2V68/2O50 and 2V73. 2V73 terminates in the main station and works a stopper to and from London.

RG414 spends Friday night at Redhill LHS, before working 2V54/2O30/2V56/2O36/2V61/2O41/2V65/2O46/2V71/2O52 and 2V74. Set then goes ECS to the TCD via Spur Jn (Rev) and the Low Level.

My understanding is that, at least on other franchises, one toilet is being removed on both 2-car and 3-car Class 158s, offsetting the reduction in seating due to the required 1/1/2020 mods
What is the vehicle number of coach C?
Thank you
Brian

I don't see how removing any toilet on a 158 will help offset the reduction in seating capacity, as the toilets are at vehicle ends, outside the saloon area.

In any case, as I understand it the existing disabled toilet on a 158/159 can be modified to be PRM-TSI compliant, so there's no need to fit the vast new modules that are taking up many seats on other units. You might lose a couple of seats for wheelchair spaces, but that's it on a 158 - it is an exceptionally good basic design that uses the space really well.

Tonight both green GWR HST sets are spending the night at Long Rock (Penzance) depot. I believe this is the first time this has happened.

I noticed one of the sets has a dynamic lines livery 43 on one end of it.

If the 159s coming back from Loughborough, all that has really changed in the 'disabled' toilet is the bowl being replaced and moved at a slightly different angle.

A couple seats were removed for the enlarged wheelchair area, although tip-up seats have been installed in that area so seats are available when no wheelchair users are using the train. So I assume the GWR 158 coming back will be roughly the same.

-------

@ The Master, I believe one of the green sets had an incident last week in Cardiff (this thread has more details - http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=133435) hence why one end is 43041

When does 165 101 return back to Reading? I wonder if the new aircon will actually work, unlike 166s.

The 165/1s will get air cooling - like their Chiltern 165/0 brethren - not air conditioning and, as far as I am aware, this work is going to done under a separate contract, in the same way that wifi is being fitted on the GWR Turbos independently of the Wolverton work.

The contract that Angel Trains has with Knorr-Bremse at Wolverton for the 165 (both GWR and Chiltern) and 166 fleets is for installation of accessible toilets, a repaint and modifications to things like the doors and passenger information system. This contract was agreed in 2013, well before GWR said the 165s would get air cooling kit.

Understand one vehicle (not sure which one) of 150248 will be returning today on Lowloader from Wolverton to PM. It has been completed in advance of it's partner and so is being sent back so GWR can form up another 150/9. It will be attached to another re-liveried one which has been suggested will be 150233 but not yet confirmed.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

The returning vehicle is 52248 and will be formed into 150233 next week, making 150933.
Also 52219 (Plymouth one) due back next week so 150219 and 150238 should return to their normal formations.

Back at PM and already numbered 150933

Unusual for a 150/2 to form the outer thirds of a three car unit. Will that be a long-term thing?

No. We've had 150938 for over 2 months now rather than leave a good carriage idle. When all the repairs have been carried out they will all revert back to normal 2 Car formation. At the moment with the fleet stretched as it is, any carriage is a bonus.

165101 should be completed at Wolverton next Friday (12th August) so theoretically should return that weekend but not confirmed yet. 165102 is pencilled in as the next candidate.

Their Maintenance schedules should decide the order
