A priest has had his throat slit and another churchgoer is fighting for his life followng an attack by two men with knives. The attackers have since been killed by police.

A priest has been killed in an attack by two armed men at his church near Rouen in northern France, police and French media have said.
The armed men entered the church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray during Mass, taking the priest, Fr Jacques Hamel, 84, and four other people hostage.
French TV said shots had been heard after police arrived at the scene. Both hostage-takers are now dead.
Pope Francis decried the "pain and horror of this absurd violence".
French interior ministry spokesman, Pierre-Henri Brandet, said one of the hostages had been critically wounded.
He said the hostage-takers had been "neutralised" after coming out of the church. Police were now searching the church for explosives.
The area has been cordoned off and police have told people to stay away.
'Barbaric'
Mr Brandet said the motive of the attackers was not immediately clear, but the investigation into the incident would be led by anti-terrorism prosecutors.
French Prime Minister Manuel Valls has expressed his horror at the "barbaric attack".
"The whole of France and all Catholics are wounded. We will stand together," he wrote on Twitter.
President Francois Hollande has arrived in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray to be briefed by police.
The Archbishop of Rouen, Dominique Lebrun, who was attending a Catholic gathering in Poland, said: "I cry out to God with all men of goodwill. I would invite non-believers to join in the cry.
"The Catholic Church cannot take weapons other than those of prayer and brotherhood among men."

Appalling. But I agree that shouting Daesh doesn't make any sense. Daesh is the nickname for ISIL in the Middle East and is very derogatary. (Daesh have threatened to cut out the tongue of anyone they catch using it.)

That's right. Either way, this attack seems to have been committed by supporters of ISIL so it will be interesting to see what else is said.


It has been a sad few days, we've had the Munich shooting, a women being machete'd in southern Germany, a Syrian refugee blowing himself up (also in Germany), a shooting of a doctor in Berlin and in Japan, one man has stabbed 19 disabled people to death.

So much death! We've been comparatively lucky in the Uk, it's as though our young muslims are doing better than their French counterparts. Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if we get hit next.

Totally impossible, how many concerts, religious meetings, shopping centres, cinemas, railway stations etc are there in this country?, there is no way that this country has enough weapons trained Police to offer anything other than token protection in large cities or at specific events, the majority of posters on this forum wouldn't stand for more armed officers anyway, we've been through that many times before

"Be on your guard" is completely correct, some of us sad old gits on here have been through this type of thing before, courtesy of the IRA, and it was only 11 years ago that 50 people were killed and over 700 injured by 4 Islamic murderers

An 84-year-old priest was killed and four other people taken hostage by two armed men who stormed his church in a suburb of Rouen in northern France.
The two attackers, who said they were from the so-called Islamic State (IS), slit Fr Jacques Hamel's throat during a morning Mass, officials say.
Police later surrounded the church, in St-Etienne-du-Rouvray, and shot dead both hostage-takers.
One of the hostages is in a critical condition in hospital.

One nun who witnessed the attack, told BFM TV that the men forced Fr Hamel to his knees and recorded the killing, speaking Arabic as they did so. She says she fled as they were preparing to kill him.
Elite police units, specialised in hostage-taking, surrounded the church.
President Hollande said the attackers claimed to be from the self-styled IS before they were killed by police as they came out of the church.

Within hours of the attack, the IS-linked Amaq news agency, said "two IS soldiers" had carried out the attack.
Few details are yet known about the attackers, but Mohammed Karabila, a local Muslim leader, told the Associated Press that one of them had been "followed by police for at least a year and a half".
The French ITele website also said one of them had tried to reach Syria in May 2015 but was turned back at the Turkish border.
According to the report, he then spent nearly a year in prison before being released in March, on condition he wear an electronic tag and move back in with his parents.

The local prosecutor, Francois Molins, has made a statement to local French media stating that one of the two attackers, 19 year old Adel Kermiche, was known to the authorities and had twice been arrested in 2015 for attempting to travel to Syria. He said that the man was known to the police and was wearing a surveillance tag.

Innocent until proven guilty is an important principle, and it should be a cornerstone of a free society.

No, I was being sarcastic there, I don't advocate killing people on suspicion that they might commit acts of terror. What I actually think should be done is to place those on the watchlist under greater surveillance. If you are on the watchlist, you aren't completely guilt-free or else you wouldn't be on there. Anyhow, my idea for society would not be barbaric and and repressive at all, we do need surveillance whether you like it or not and your comment seems hyperbolic.
