Friday 22 July 2016 - Another freight has broken down on The Marches - between Church Stretton to Shrewsbury. A very busy time for passengers services!

Delays in 3 figures and Gerallt 1716 Cardiff to Holyhead cancelled.

No offence - but maybe not as serious as a freight breaking down on the WCML south of Milton Keynes in the peak....

Not that many freights now in any case on the N+W , with the massive reduction of imported coal flows for Rugely etc - a signaler acquaintance has some quiet night shifts now ..........great for reading and studying......if not for traffic

To be fair things have been a lot better lately than a couple of years ago when this was happening seemingly every month - although today was a big one. Rescue loco had to come all the way from Newport, and by that stage ATW services were getting held as far back as Cardiff.

Yes, things have improved a lot regarding freight failures on The Marches. It seems ages since the last one - as far I know. So, something must have happened to improve reliability of the freights.

Does ATW have to foot the compensation bill for delayed passengers even though it was not their fault?

Are passengers advised to retain tickets and not put them in the barrier controls so that they have proof of travel in order to claim compensation?

Was meant to get Gerald last night from Newport to arrive Wrexham at about a quarter to eight - just in time for a nice evening.

Ended up waiting over an hour at Newport, Hereford, betwixt Leominster and Ludlow and then half an hour or so at Shrewsbury for the connection to Wrexham. Got home at a quarter to midnight.

Would say information from staff was patchy - much better though when you sought them out. Had a nice chat with a very frustrated yet incredibly helpful driver at Hereford.

I was sat next to a family travelling from Dubai who were visiting relatives in Bury. They had got Dubai - London quicker than London - Manchester.

Gerald was cancelled due to the failure. There is a 5Z96 Canton CS to Holyhead currently en route and which left Shrewsbury at 1005 to position for Monday..

56 partial cancellations, 2 full cancellations, 2673 delay minutes.

Big bill for someone today....

I have no doubt that there will be plenty of re-attribution going on as the minutes get disputed to dodgy attribution in the first place.

A perfect storm - light engine from AD junction to assist and the need to manage SLW in the middle of all this ....

Yes - very disruptive for a hot Friday too ....

6M86 1029 Margam to Dee Marsh failed today between Pontypool and Abergavenny. Eventually struggled on to Hereford causing heavy delays. Left Hereford 255L at 1940 and has now stopped the job again, failing between Hereford and Leominster. Loco 66148

A broken down freight train between Hereford and Leominster is causing delays of up to 40 minutes to trains between Hereford and Shrewsbury. Limited road transport is running from Hereford towards Leominster and stations beyond. Disruption is expected to continue until the end of service

"Limited road transport" sounds catastrophic for people relying on the train for a long-distance journey.

Did it struggle to Hereford - the Hayes-Moreton appears to have been put off at Panteg?

No - simply that there's been less freight recently, plus Colas have been using 70s on the logs instead of their heritage stuff.

If they were travelling London to Manchester, what were they doing on a train south of Shrewsbury?

Wonder if it's the same engine from Fridays incident? It's the same service so there's a good chance it is.

66112 on Friday, showing SHNT at Port Talbot now, and 66148 last night. I think it would be quite unusual for it to be the same engine, there can't be many diesel jobs (GBRf excepted) that have the same loco on consecutive days, especially when a weekend's engineering intervenes.

6M86 seems to have gone back to Margam and the Moreton-on-Lugg train appears to have reached its destination as the loco is shown there, although nothing in RTT beyond Panteg.

1046 Hayes to Moreton-on-Lugg was the train whose loco was removed from at Panteg Loop to assist 6M86 over Llanfihangel Bank and onto Hereford. The loco then returned to Panteg for it's own train although RTT, as already stated, shows the train as disappearing into thin air. 6M86 continued on own from Hereford and then we know what happened !!! Assisting loco sent from AD Jn and RTT shows train terminating at Leominster. Then into thin air also.

6M86 Mon went back to Margam in the booked path, or at least its engine did.

Apparently the driver asked to go in Abergavenny loop but this was declined due to the exit points being plain lined - that should produce some interesting delay attribution arguments.
