So why do we have lots of DOO lines, if passengers are supposedly being successfully mobilised by the unions?
Because unfortunately ASLEF accepted it all those years ago. I'm a driver who works both DOO and guarded trains. I dread the day when I've got upwards of a 1000 people on my train and I need to leave the train for some reason. The risk of people detraining themselves and walking down the track of their own accord is very high as in the modern world. I love having a guard on my train. Knowing there is another safety critical member of staff on my train means when s**t happens I can concentrate on what I need to do and not worry about passengers as the guard will deal with them, call control, and contact the signaller if I need them to. I can concentrate on what I need to do.
