Tilbury Riverside question

i hope this is in the right section;please move if its not. Please settle an argument between myself & a friend. I say the above station was formally closed to rail traffic in the early 1990s (1991 sticks in my mind) but my friend argues that whilst passenger trains no longer run there the bus service from Tilbury Town is a permanent Rail Replacement Bus Service. Who is correct please?

Disused Stations website has more. This says it closed to trains in 1992.

A quick enquiry on National Rail Enquiries shows Tilbury Riverside as a 'station' (code TBR) and offers a through fare (I tried from Southend Central) including the bus connection from Tilbury Town.

Out of curiosity, I also tried Also offers a through fare Southend Central - Gravesend via Tilbury Town - Tilbury Riverside and the ferry (which i think was started by the London Tilbury & Southend Railway)

The bus is Ensign route 99 - more here - the fare chart includes mention of rail tickets being valid.

Whilst you may be able to get a route via Tilbury Town and the ferry, there are no fares available which include the ferry crossing.

Bizarrely, though you can get "Tilbury and Gravesend" routed tickets and NRE will route you via the ferry, it doesn't mention you need to pay more for the ferry.

Train tickets are valid on the connecting bus down to Tilbury Riverside, but as you say as far as I can remember you have to pay on the ferry run by White Horse Ferries.

Looking at National Rail enquires from London Kings Cross to Tilbury Riverside it sometimes routes you to next door St. Pancreas down to Gravesend via high speed route and ferry across river.

A little word of warning, the ferry does not operate on Sundays and if there is two cruise ships on the pontoon on the same day again the ferry does,t operate. Been in Tilbury when two ships have been in together and ferry and access to pontoon was closed down for the day.

What is the situation if you arrive at Tilbury Riverside and require a rail ticket? to include the bus journey?

Tilbury Riverside isn't a station, so there are no ticket selling facilities and no option to commence a rail journey from there. You only get the bus part of the ticket as part of a through journey requiring the ferry.

It would be a bit like asking why Heathrow Bus Terminal doesn't have a NR ticket office.

I was just curious enough to check it out on the nationalrail.co.uk journey planner. I suspect something needs fixing on the website: Asking for a Southend to Gravesend journey offers the route via the ferry, but with an off-peak return fare of £31.80! (Southend to Tilbury Riverside is a more reasonable £10.80. I suspect the higher fare is actually for travel via London, but I'd imagine it wouldn't be hard for someone to get caught out and - if buying online - pay the £31.80 believing that will entitle them to use the ferry.

If you search NR enquiries for trains to or from Richmond you need to choose between 'London' and 'North Yorkshire'. That doesn't mean there is a station - the Yorkshire one closed almost fifty years ago.

I used to travel via Tilbury Riverside to Fenchurch Street from Stanford-le-Hope in the 1980s. I remember back then that the trains always went into Tilbury Riverside and reverse, which added to the length of the journey. I'm not sure if trains by passed the terminus, using the route they use today.

If you arrive at Tilbury Riverside having landed off the ferry, then you buy a bus ticket for the 99 bus service to Tilbury Town - keeping hold of the ticket and this is exchanged as a part payment at Tilbury Town for onward train tickets.

I've caught the train from Canterbury stations to Southend stations, route: via Gravesend/Tilbury a few times to get to Southend Airport and football games away at Roots Hall, though the last time was 2014.

It's a fair bit cheaper than via Stratford (looking at BR Fares it's £18.20 off-peak day return instead of £28.60, with a Gold Card). As the previous poster said, the bus is £1 each way if you hold a train ticket, and I think I paid for the ferry too at around £3 return.

There were a limited number of mostly peak hour services that used the north curve, I.e. the current route. And until the mid 80s there used to be a loco hauled parcels service from Liverpool St to Southend East that ran forward to beyond the East junction, that then propelled back into Riverside, avoiding the need to run round before continuing on to Southend East.

Not quite, if you already hold an appropriate VIA TILBURY/GRAVESEND routed ticket (previous TILBURY EXCL FERRY) then you don't need to pay for the bus.

The bus is ran by Ensign Bus on behalf of c2c for the bit between Tilbury Town and Tilbury Riverside, with a commercial element for the route route the Tilbury ASDA Circular (there used to simply be a chartered minibus that just ran on a schedule before the service was improved).

If you come off the ferry at Tilbury having boarded at Gravesend but don't already hold a rail ticket, then you can't purchase the rail ticket at Tilbury Riverside Jetty, but you can buy a bus ticket for £1 and use this as part payment at Tilbury Town station where a rail ticket would need to be bought.

Technically rail tickets going to/from Tilbury Town are still marked "Tilbury Stations" so includes Tilbury Riverside. So this is why the bus is free provided you hold a rail ticket. (Otherwise it's just be a free bus).

No you can't. There are tickets that are routed that way (might as well be marked NOT VIA LONDON) but they don't actually include the fare for the ferry.

What is at the site of Tilbury Riverside Station now? I remember taking the ferry from Gravesend in the 1970s and I am sure you walked of the boat into the station almost.

On a sort of related theme, was Gravesend West Station near the Ferry too. (On the Kent side of the River.)?

Some of the actual station buildings are still actually there, but the platforms etc have all now gone to be replaced with a road and the rest of the station platform area etc is now a yard with rail access. The old station and the area on the station side of the road is now used by the cruise terminal next door for there activities.
