Regrading overtime:
Non railway but Whenever I did rota day off overtime I worked out if it was worthwhile on net pay not gross pay. Did it cover my additional petrol driving to work? Gross pay is irrelevant to me, I only see net pay so that's what I count as my income for overtime.

Since I've had children I've done very little overtime as family life is most important now. When I was single, I was doing 40 hours + overtime some weeks. Back when min wage was around £5 a hour, I could clear £500 a week wages on minimum wage! It destroyed me though looking back. Current job I only need 30 hours a week to clear that kind of money

I used to do the same kind of silly hours before my railway days, around 100+/week with 10pm finishes into 3am starts. Looking back I have no idea how I managed it but I was clearing a rather decent weekly rate around £800/week plus accrued leave on the two agency jobs (three jobs plus freelance work at the time). Nowerdays I'm glad of the overtime ban we have, 35hrs/week... 60 including commutes, is less money overall compared with a good week's agency work though...
