Hi,

I'm planning a day of spotting at either of these two spots:

Leyland

OR

Acton Bridge

I have never spotted up that way before, apart from a day at Crewe and a day at Stafford. I have seen videos on YouTube of both and they both seem very good for variety. I wanted to know two things:

> Which station is better for spotting?

AND

> What day of the week is better for more variety and action?

For your information, I am currently planning for Tuesday or Thursday next week.

Many thanks,
Leo

Have you looked at rtt for both stations? Which station is more photogenic to you?

I've spent a few hours on the end of platforms 2 and 3 at Leyland. Good visibility and decent angles without too much clutter from wires. Usual wcml traffic as well as Preston to Manchester TP traffic 185s usually. Also Blackpool to York NT 150, 156, 158 and 142s. Class 319 NT to Liverpool. Have a look at my Flickr albums https://www.flickr.com/gp/jmc-223/88030d for some examples.

Acton Bridge is better for freight and WCML expresses plus LM Liverpool stoppers.
Leyland is better for passenger traffic. Plenty of northern and TPE units plus the virgin stuff but less freight than at Acton Bridge.

Id say Wednesday is quite good for Freight round Leyland, dont know about Acton Bridge though. Real time trains will list most of it but not everything runs.

According to the Freightmaster tables which are normally very accurate Acton Bridge for freight is a much better choice, there can be long gaps between freight at Leyland from late morning to mid afternoon especially.

Brilliant, thank you everyone for your help and information. I will most likely go to Acton Bridge next tuesday then, weather reports state it will be sunny and up to 28 degrees, though I know how quickly this can change! Thanks for the freight reports too, will look at them and RTT too for information on when is the best time to arrive and leave.

Once again, huge thanks to everyone for your help,
Leo Martin
