Anyone know why the 09:41 from NOT to BHM today (04/07/16) was a Voyager instead of the usual Turbostar? The only time we usually see a Voyager in Nottingham is the 06:37 to Bournemouth.

Edit:
NOT=Nottingham
BHM=Birmingham New Street

Names added for station codes as requested below.

This type of substitution is not unusual at all if a 170 is not available. Voyagers can be found at times on 170 work except the Stanstead Airport services, not cleared for the route. At times 170s have deputised for Voyagers, usually on a Manchester trip but not south of Bristol Parkway.

Where is "NOT" and where is "BHM" - I can't seem to find these places on the map? :)

The Mods have, in the past, suggested the full name of locations should be shewn in the first post in which they are mentioned. I agree, as many people don't know the codes off the top of their heads so either have to ask, as in the case here, or go searching themselves.

I get the impression it's pretty unusual for Nottingham (I spend quite a lot of time at Nottingham Station!)

It's not exactly common but comes in ebbs and flows with 170 availability. They're more likely to cover a Birmingham - Leicester rounder but do find their way to Nottingham from time to time. The 1739 New St - Derby stopper is also a fairly regular sub.

I have travelled on a Voyager on a Cardiff to Nottingham but which was swapped out at Birmingham New St for a 170

Added full station names to original post.

I use the 3-letter codes all the time so it's second nature but I realize that's not the case for everyone.

Despite the fact that BNS is used throughout New Street....

It's what I've always used and nothing makes me want to scream more than someone smugly intentionally misinterpreting it as Barnes. I and plenty of other people I know have been using BNS as an abbreviation for Birmingham New Street for decades, why should we change because some folk have decided it's cool to communicate in CRS codes :|

Just as cringeworthy as people who use headcodes and not the actual service.

I find this annoying when there is more than one train with the same reporting number even on the same route if there is an intensified service, one in the morning and they come round again in the evening.

Try Northern's Cheshire Lines Lime St - Oxford Road services. As a general rule they're all 2H40/42/44/46/48 on the up and 2F91/93/95/97/99 on the down in rotation. I'd love to see how they differentiate between them internally.

Having had a chat with people from timetable planning they seem to only communicate in phonetic headcodes. When you chat about whether it's "Lima Two Zero or Lime One Six" that has standing time at a particular location. Argh!

Give me CRS codes & railway jargon any day. Head codes are fine as long as time or route are shown as they can often be ambiguous.

Well we will do, if we are searching for a train then it is easier to use a headcode than to try and look for a 9.57 to Manchester Piccadilly.

I think it is easier and more appropriate all round, though, on a public forum to type a place name out in full than to expect readers to have to flit to another resource and back again mid-sentence in order to gain understanding of what is being discussed.

However it is completely unnecessary for the majority of forum members, this is a hassle for the many benefiting the few.

Do we really know that the majority of forum members, and for that matter, casual readers of these forums, understand three letter station codes? I would argue that the use of station codes, outside of professional necessity, appeals only to a minority of hardcore enthusiasts.

I need to know a few of them as part of my job, but my knowledge is far from comprehensive and I see no need to include them in written text where clear English would be more appropriate and very little extra effort to provide.

I'd consider myself as someone who understands a wide range of the 3 letter CSR codes, but only for my local areas. I was completely thrown by the two in the opening post.

It's well worth giving the full names.

I'm fairly seasoned with a number of CRS codes, and BHM/NOT are ones I know. However there are a lot I don't know, so it is definitely worth including the names as per the forum guidelines

The CRS codes are also confusable with other things. A few months ago I was trying to work out why a thread on East Midlands Parkway suddenly started talking about the builder of the class 66. They also give certain people an opportunity to display a rather unwelcome one-upmanship and can take a thread completely off-topic as they have done with this one.
