Fare advice - Birmingham to Folkestone

Hello,

Having trouble finding a decent fare/time for a journey from any of the Birmingham stations departing this Friday (07/11) and arriving in Folkestone no later than 20:00 (so says the other half ), and then returning on the Monday (10/11), departing Folkestone after 14:00.

The cheapest fare and shortest journey I can find is £61.20 departing BHM and changing at Charing Cross, but returning the first train we can get back is 15:52, which gets back in at 20:09. The off peak fare isn't available until then.

If we go via Moor street, via marylebone and split the ticket, so that a off peak return BMO to MYB is £30.00, departing at 13:15, and then getting a return ticket from Charing Cross to Folkestone is £27.80, doing it this way means we can leave Folkestone at either 14:02 or 14:43 and get back into Birmingham between 1800 & 1900. Obviously this will work out slightly dearer than £61.20 as we'll have to purchase tube tickets but at least we'll be able to get back earlier.

Can anyone else offer up any alternatives if there are any?

Looks like you're best going via High Wycombe on a 4A SVR priced at £46.

is that for the entire journey (b'ham to folkestone) or does it just cover the birmingham to london part (via HWY)

If you are splitting at Marylebone I'd suggest getting the first ticket to Charing Cross instead as it's the same price and will include your tube travel.

Interestingly, that fare is set by SET. So why are SET choosing to give discounts for passengers using the High Wycome route? Did Chiltern ask them to do this, I wonder? How odd.
