Class 313, I'm not so sure you know, I think there is a pretty big "semi" InterCity market between Stanstead, Peterborough and Birmingham, and similarly between Nottingham/Derby/Birmingham and Cardiff, in much the same way that TPE would serve similar markets accross the North.

Are there any 170's that have plug sockets in Standard Class though?

I'm fairly sure the TPE 170s have had plugs fitted throughout, to bring them in line with the 185s.

Its them being greedy .... 2ns clas was wedged, first class was empty...

Agreed.
I await the customer response via passenger focus ......
It will be interesting to see if this results in an embarassing failure for Arriva i.e. money badly spent on unecessary refurbishment, followed by no increase in revenue because the 1st class fares are way too expensive.

Remember that they only offer 1st anytime singles and returns,no cheap-day returns. I wonder if there will be any discounted offers come the timetable change in December, to encourage passengers to try 1st class.

Any forum members know of any such marketing moves ?

I'll reiterate that the new 1st class on 170s is not viable to purchase an anytime 1st single or return, as it is possible to upgrade for your single journey on the unit for £10, which works out far cheaper for someone going from Birmingham to Nottingham or to Cardiff etc.

Whether it's a good idea or not I don't know, but it won't show a loss in revenue, because people are not refusing to travel because of 1st class, they simply travel in std. But if someone pays for 1st class then that is an increase in revenue. It remains to be seen if this is enough to pay for it, but the refurbishment was about more than just 1st class being put in. Just wait until you see the catering in action serving microwaved food with their microwave and sink of hot water (this is the white shuttered area in the refurb sets which is currently closed down, look hard and you'll find it)

really?! thought they were locked OOU luggage racks! I still think it'd have been better on the ex MML sets to use the old buffet thats been out of use for years.

the ex MML ones are absolute luxury, the seats are MASSIVE! They are soft, the recliners generally work, and all seats including airline style have a table and light. Thee new XC first class on 170s is spin-off style 1st class like London Midland's 321s, all the extras you get in there is a table, armrest and anti macassre

The declassified 1st class on the ex-MML Turbostars is certainly comfortable and there will be many who will miss them. However, it has to be said when they transferred to Central Trains they got into a pretty sorry state with broken seats, broken arm rests etc.

The only people who seem to use the new XC first class are industry employees.

yes, the decomissioned first class is rapidly disappearing (only a couple of units left with it now I think).
