The engines were derated in all types from 750 bhp to 700 bhp to prolong engine life.

Are you sure an engine drops out when line speed is reached ?

Yes, it's a feature of the eco mode setting on the TMS. When running in speed set an engine will be shut down after a couple of minutes or at predetermined GPS points if eco mode is active. Eco can be deactivated by the Driver if they wish.

Back to the topic of 0-top speed. A 350/4 can do 0-110mph in just over 3 minutes on an easy gradient.

Off topic question, but this post reminds me of something I've meant to ask on here, but I only think of it when I'm on the tube!

Do Central Line trains run faster between central London stations than trains on other lines such as the Northern or Piccadilly?

It's just that I always get that impression? Maybe they're just noisier?

No - although the Central Line is one of the faster lines overall, in the tunnel sections it's actually comparatively slow, I don't think 40 mph is exceeded if I remember rightly.

By comparison the Piccadilly routinely reaches 45 mph on longer sections and the Victoria Line runs at 50 mph as routine. The Northern has some sections where 50 is reached (Kennington to Waterloo nb, and Highgate to East Finchley nb). If I remember rightly the Jubilee probably is the fastest in the central London tunnels where I think 60 is reached in places - definitely on the JLE section and possibly on the older section too. The Piccadilly also reaches high speeds in the Heathrow tunnels. Bakerloo is the slowest, rare to get above 35 mph on there.

3 car 380 is 0-60mph in 39secs
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

3 car 380 is approx 15sec faster 0-60mph than a 4 car

I heard a rumour the 3 car sets are overpowered and Scotrail might disable the motors in one of the driving vehicles of 3 car sets.

What sort of speeds does the Met hit out in the further reaches? I heard something like 60mph going out to Amersham, or thereabouts with the new stock.

Would the acceleration of a Desiro have been increased by much had all coaches of a unit had traction motors?

That depends if the power to weight ratio was different. If they had been designed with the same performance overall, the motors themselvesd would either be smaller/lower maximum power, or be limited by system control software. Trains are after all, not racing vehicles, they are there to provide a defined performance of speed vs reliability vs energy conservation at an absolute through-life cost.

The maximum permissible line speed out there is 60 mph. It's been that for longer than the S stock has been in service. Chiltern units and LUL stock adhere to the same limits on Underground infrastructure.

I can't see any possible advantage to doing so. If they were replacing the bogies with unpowered ones so that the motors could be used in other units it might make some sense, but if they simply disable the motor then they are carting around dead weight and making the other motors work harder.

That's been a rumour since they were introduced in 2010. Doubt it'll happen as it will result in the braking being not as good and less eco friendly as there will be less leccy put back into the grid. Timings are so tight now between Ayr - Glasgow that a 6 car 380 can't keep to time on all stoppers. The 380 was specified to be faster than 334s to improve journey times, so isolating traction motors would be a step backwards for Scotland's aim of improving journey times and running more services.

Motors don't like being turned without power going through them as the hat dvt found out. Not sure if that's the case with ac motors tho..

You wouldn't be able to have motors on all coaches as there would be no space on the undercarriage for Traction Control Units and Auxiliary Control Units on the Pantograph coach as the transformer and all its control units and cooling systems take up all the available space.

A 4 car 380 could be made more powerful by adding traction equipment to the TOSL coach which has an empty undercarriage apart from brake reservoir and small toilet tank.

I always thought that about the 380's you can really feel the acceleration when sat in them i like to nickname them pocket rockets just purely by the speed they pull off at!

I seem to remember another time this was discussed members of the Desiro family topped the table, with the Javelin coming a bit after the Desiros.

I remember seeing a video of a light loco 91 accelerating pretty quickly, but can't seem to find it anymore.

Did they ever increase the speed limit from 90 to 100 to make the most of the 380s down there? I'm sure it was planned at least.....

Do I not remember a couple of light class 31's accelerating at 9.8m/s/s at Cricklewood?
