Paul Merton, Secret Stations

[Intercity 225]

A few have mentioned continuity errors and like many others this doesn't bother me. However one shot at Denton is particularly bizarre and I'd appreciate it if someone can help me figure it out.

It's clear that when Paul is travelling between Reddish South and Denton he's on board an ex-Merseyrail 142 but when he disembarks a Class 150 is seen pulling away from Denton. That in itself I understand because four carriages can be seen on screen when he initially boards at Reddish South which presumably consists of a 142 attached to a 150. However after the 150 is shown pulling away from Denton the following scene switches to a 142 - I can't think of how this could have occurred unless it was filmed on another date (at least one week before or after Paul's visit) or unless Northern laid on some special services to assist with the filming. Does anyone know?

If anyone still has the show recorded and would like to look at this footage it's between 00:36:50 and 00:37:00 based on my recording.

Most likely it was filmed at different times, I doubt Northern would have laid on a special service to assist with the filming.

Check the unit's lights - the TV production companies are fond of rewinding the film (presumably for 'artistic' reasons), so you may be simply seeing the arriving train filmed in reverse.

Thanks for the theory Hophead but the 142 in the final shot is definitely shown leaving Denton. The two ends of the station are distinct from one another so it's possible to make it out.

I've often wondered if there's any merit in just getting off at some local stations (not necessarily request stops) on local routes just to have a wander around and see what's around.

I commute from Wolverhampton to Birmingham every day, often on the local stopper services, and yet I have no idea what Tipton or Smethwick (etc.) are like. Seems like a bit of a shame.

I do a lot of that and have found that, particularly when the station has an infrequent service, it's useful to know if there's a decent pub nearby to wait for the next train, if there isn't much to see in the area!

For this reason I can recommend www.whatpub.com. You just type in the name of your station and it tells you where the nearest pub is and how to get there.

I read one blog of a chap who got off a train at Acton Bridge and took the bus to Northwich to catch a train for Manchester. And then complained that the Northwich railway station is a long walk from the Northwich bus station.
But the bus from Acton Bridge to Northwich passes right by Greenbank station where he could have boarded the same train as he caught at Northwich!

I can remember playing in the Acton Bridge coal sidings as a kid. Long gone of course.

A friend of mine did exactly this, and wrote a book about his experiences.
It was, however, on the slightly more picturesque Inverness-Edinburgh route!

Tipton station and Smethwick (both stations) are very close to some interesting parts of the Birmingham canal network, and at Smethwick Galton Bridge - there's the original, historic Galton Bridge right outside the station. I've explored the area extensively (from a canal perspective) and found it fascinating. there are lots of mini-walks you can do between the stations via the canals.

Here's a map of the the Smethwick area - you can see there's two parallel canals (old and new 'cut') which join at Soho.
