170421 was at Wembley today. Not sure if that is anything out of the ordinary, but can't see it mentioned on this thread.
Probably hiding amongst Caledonian Sleeper stock before trying to escape back to Scotland to mark the first anniversary of the start of its unproductive life at the hands of GTR. :)

170423 in southern livery has just departed Milton Keynes heading back down south. Its got southern branding on the driving coaches, all its vehicle numbers in place, data panels on the ends of the coaches as a 170/4 but its not got any set numbers on the cabs.

Is it running as a 2 car?

New numbers should be

171201
171202
171401
171402

It was running as a 3-car unit still.

No, was working at the time so no photo sorry.

It looks smart and ready for action - whilst I prefer the newer 2 light style cluster, I quite like the look of the 171/2. Sure it'll provide some much welcomed extra capacity.

So, bear with me as it's early and I had a rough night on the Cally Insomnie:

170421 to 170424 are *confirmed* as being reformed and renumbered to 171201 to 171204 now?

Assuming so, I will updating my needs lists, and it means I only need 9 more 170s!

I thought they were going to be added to the existing 171 7xx and 8xx ranges? So why open a new sequence for them? Are there rather more design differences than previously thought?

Once reformed the 2 car units will be renumbered into the 1712xx series and the 4 car units into 1714xx

I'm not 100% sure but I'm told it is something to do with engineering requirements

It just looks like the Scotrail unit reliveried!

Are the 'dark rings round the eyes', the headlight rims, old First Group dark blue, that would be a bit cheapo to be fair to the horrified comment above?

Scotrail did something to the taillight surrounds on some units that caused them to stand proud of the front end, I've always thought that looks a bit rough, like your granddad's fixed it for you. I don't think that helps here either.

Anyway, at least it's done - 55 weeks and counting... :)

They appear to have been repainted black - as per the earliest Southern 377s. As for the taillights, I think that was a Bombardier modification as most if not all of the earlier 168 & 170d were treated the same way.

I'm not sure about those surrounds around the tail-lights, some units seems to have some, others don't. Having just had a look at a few images, there doesn't seem to be an obvious subclass correlation to explain it.

I think it was different TOCs doing the mod (or not).

The reason for the change was because the old tail-light lens was mounted on the inside. Guess what when one needed changing after a bird strike or whatever? Yep it took ages to do as it was very difficult to get at. So they've changed to an outside mounted version. It may not look as neat, but it is way more practical from a maintenance point of view.

171202 at Selhurst ;)

Which is what in 'old money'?

Vehicle Numbers:
50423
56423
79423

ex 170423

Middle car to be taken out to make a 4 car in one of the other 3s

So they aren't even renumbering them in order? Surely 170423 should become 171201 or 171401?

Unless of course, 170421 becomes 171201 and 170422 becomes 170401 with the extra carriage from 170421. Similarly, 170423 becomes 171202 and 170424 becomes 170402 with the extra carriage from 170423
