I'm organising a pub crawl starting at Kings Cross and ending at Peterborough on a Saturday , with numerous stops.

The intended ticketing is a Super Off Peak Day Return from Great Northern , which is £18.60 . I've just gone to check that it is indeed possible to make numerous breaks of journey on the return portion and Great Northern's ticketing site is showing the breaks of journey are not allowed.

I've then checked more expensive ticket types and according to the GN ticket site NONE of their tickets have a break of journey allowed , this must be incorrect.

Can anyone please supply me with a reliable answer ?

A Super Off Peak Day Return (CBA) from Peterborough to London permits break of journey on both portions.

The only restriction is that it's only valid on the trains operated by GTR (branded Great Northern), ie not Virgin Trains East Coast.

Thank you , that is surprisingly useful .
It also means that a friend who lives in London will be able to do the crawl on the outward portion and when we finish , go back to London

Indeed. By the way, see:
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/ticket_types/46590.aspx
Break of journey is allowed on the outward portion of Off-Peak tickets unless otherwise indicated by a restriction shown against the ticket's validity code and in all cases on the return portion of Off-Peak return tickets.

Some tickets erroneously mention a return portion break of journey, but this is a mistake and doesn't override the above principle. The only ones I can think of right now were (and possibly still are)priced by LM, and LM's own staff were actively encouraging people to break their journey using those tickets anyway!

ISTR that straight after simplification they were able to restrict in that way, and LM did. This changed, but some of the restrictions were not yet updated.

Unless it's the VTEC version which obviously is only valid on VTEC

The Super Off Peak Return from Peterborough to London Terminals is 'Any Permitted' so is valid on VTEC and Great Northern.

This shouldn't be confused with the Super Off Peak Day Return which is the ticket the OP is proposing to get which is 'Great Northern only'.

Are you sure there isn't a 'VTEC Only' one that starts tomorrow?

Interesting. I can't see this in Avantix Traveller so conclude it must be a promotional fare.

Also, I didn't think VTEC could introduce a promotional fare where they set the inter-available fare, which they do between Peterborough and London.

TOCs are allowed to introduce promotional fares on such flows subject to a maximum period of availability of 12 weeks in a year, IIRC. VTWC have done so for a few years on Birmingham-London.

Doesn't show in BRFares either; NRE shows it as having an X1 restriction - any time at weekends & bank hols, BoJ allowed (not that it's particularly useful here!).

Only for the outward portion.

True; there isn't a ticket of the exact type mentioned by the OP which is routed "Any Permitted"

No, they were definitely allowed to restrict on the return portion - but this was allowed for a very short period of time. All the LM super-cheapo tickets were so restricted.

I think you'll find that the reason it was only for a very short time was because it wasn't allowed and they had to backtrack to follow the rules.

No, the general ticket conditions for Super Off Peak allowed it as originally published - but they changed very quickly afterwards.

The famous backtrack was VTWC and northbound evening peak restrictions from MKC.

I used the VTEC only Super Off Peak Return last Saturday combined with a March to Market Rasen ticket for a very cheap way of getting from London to Lincoln which allowed me to use both the the main line through Newark and return via Sleaford.
