I've emailed SWT to ask them..
What did you ask?

If you word it like this...
I have purchased a Romsey to Southampton Central Anytime Day ticket.

I understand that break of journey is permitted with Anytime Day fares.

Therefore, can you confirm that I allowed to break my journey at any intermediate station on a through train between Romsey and Southampton?
....you have a chance of receiving a favourable response.

If they say no, you can refer the matter to Transport Focus.

Ok here's my first correspondence:

-- question --
I wonder if you could help me with a question about ticket validity.

A off peak day return ROM-SOU
- is valid (at off peak times) as best I understand it via CFR/ESL (at least on direct trains) OR via redbridge
- allows for break of journey

As such is it permitted to do any of
- join the train "late" at CFR (for example if having been at friends) (ie CFR-SOU)
- exit the train early, for example at St Denys (change of plan/good pubs!) (ie ROM-St Denys)

My understanding from what I can see in the national rail conditions, and planner is that this would be ok

If not permitted can you advise which rule(s) apply

Can you also confirm that a CFR-SOU ticket would also enable a multiple hop journey around the loop of
CFR-St Denys (on outbound ticket)
St Denys-SOU (on outbound ticket)
SOU-ROM (on return ticket)
ROM-CFR (on return ticket)

Again, if not, which rule(s) this breaches
--end of question--

--first response from nat rail enq--
An Off-Peak day return ticket from Romsey to Southampton Central costs £4.40, and this ticket allows break of journey on the outward and return journey. There are two route options for this journey; one is via Chandlers Ford, and the other via Redbridge, and this ticket is valid on both routes. Therfore, you can board the train at Chandlers Ford and can also get off at St Denys.

The Off-Peak day return ticket from Chandlers Ford to Southampton Central costs £4.90, this ticket as well allows break of journey on the outward and return journey. There is only one route option for this journey, which is via Eastleigh. Therefore, you can break your journey at St Denys on the outward and return journey. However, you cannot use this ticket to travel via Romsey to Southampton Central.
--end of response--

This tends to suggest that what was said about the £4.40 fair being a better bet for the CFR-SOU trip is true (I live in CFR so didn't chase the romsey-esl question)........

Conversely the circular option I HAVE USED before.. they are saying is invalid, yet their route planner offers it. I've gone back to clarify

Ugh... rail tariffing!

So that says ROM-(CFR-ESL)-SOU is valid. It s

I don't see where it says that this journey cannot be broken or start/end after/before?

Let's just say it's a can of worms, if you read a few past threads on this.

SOU-ESL-ROM is not too bad as it's not that out of the way. Some other examples we had before caused a few big debates.

I won't pass judgement on that. It is difficult to say for definite what's right. For a start, does it constitute travelling on a "direct train" if you break your journey intermediately, but only travelling on through trains between the origin and destination printed on the ticket?

I agree that the first step is to see what SWT come up with. I note that NRE have given a sensible answer.

Yes, an impressive response from NRE, especially given the nature of the question, being quite complicated.

It took me a little while to find them, but here's two:

These threads relate to the through trains from Doncaster to Lincoln (and vice-versa) via Sheffield, ie all the trains operated by "NT" in this link: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/sea...16/07/27/0000-2359?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt

Indeed, it would make an awful lot of sense for routes to be recursive in some way.

Actually, to be fair, most things would make more sense than what is the case now.

The train companies make it intentionally non-recursive. By design, Leeds to Doncaster is not valid via York, but Leeds to Retford and all stations south thereof is.

However, Doncaster to York IS valid via Leeds (or Selby for that matter).

True, and a Season ticket from Conisborough to Cattal has so much validity, it's almost like having a Rover

But this risks straying off topic as the thread is about the rule regarding through trains and the rules regarding break of journey, and how compatible those rules are with each other. It's not clear to me that we're ever going to get consensus and/or a 'definitive' answer on the matter.
