Another fantastic read good sir, jammy indeed on the 73s!

It would be 99% guaranteed to be a 313 from Willesden to Euston, although I think the odd 508/3 was also about at the time.

London Trip
(PART 3-Banter on the train too)

On the way to Waterloo, we're catching up with Mavis, having a bit craic and generally taking the pee out of each other, Mavis asked John how his older sister was and if she was single yet?, Mavis had the hots for her, we all knew, John said, no shes not Im afraid, I'll let you know when she is though, you better, Mavis replied. Mavis had the uncanny knack of making us all laugh, he had a deadpan whit we missed him and he certainly missed us, he as much said so on that journey, saying(geordie alert:lol:) ye knaa lads, Im glad yis are doon here, its nice to hear a geordie voice, I git sick of repeating me-sel, to which we all went, eh? before laughing and calling him a soppy get, he said, naw man Im being serious, even my girlfriend and her mates, get me say things over and over cos they love the accent, we were gobsmacked and then John said, had on, you've got a lass, whats his name?, much to our amusement. Sarah was her name apparently, to which John said, funny name for a bloke that and what do you call the guide dog?. Mavis just laughed it off and said, aye we've been ganning oot for a few months now but John do me a favour, What's that, John asked, divvent tell your sis though, she'll get jealous? we were all in kinks. In fairtess, at that time none of us did, so we said hats off to you mate, then asked the other questions lads ask each other, when the opposite sex is involved, for the record Mavis gave nothing away.

We bailed at Waterloo and made our way round the station picking off what we could, there's more units to click off, as well as rakes of Network South East coaching stock, 50001 Dreadnought was at the blocks and a 33 was on the opposite platform, I cant be totally sure but 33105 rings a bell. I was hoping, my first sighting of a 50 on a passenger train in London, would be a cop but it wasn't to be but whatever number the 33 was, it was definitely a cop. Off we went to the ticket office and bought 4 day returns to Woking, also getting some much needed grub of sorts and pop. Time was marching on a bit, so we decided the first trip to Woking with a 50, were on it. Roughly half an hour or so later 50027 Lion became my first ever 50 for haulage, its no secret, this love of mine with 47's but I loved the noise the 50's made too, being at the front window was heaven. Later in life, I was to find out, that 50 bashers and 47 bashers, generally hated each other, well the choice of loco's. I think it had something to do with 47's slowly starting to replace the 50's.

That journey to Woking, even Mavis had his head out the window. Arrival into Woking we ran up the front to see it leave, before picking off the locos on the stabling point by the signal box, a mixture of 33 and 73's well 2 of each, Im sure all 4 were needed. After a bit of a fester, picking off various units and the odd loco working to the South West or wherever, we waited for what we hoped would be another 50, imagine the scatter from us when a 33 came in, 33119 with what looked like a dead EMU, I was reliably informed by Glen, they were TC's. I'd hoped for another 50 but boy I wasn't complaining, a crompton for haulage, another first and wow, listening to it putt putting it away, was a joy. By the time we got back to Waterloo it was about half 8. Mavis said, he was gonna have to shoot away soon, we were hoping to get to Paddington but that was now a no go, we had to be at Kings Cross in 3 hrs, none of us were entirely sure how long it would take, so we decided to say our fairwell's to Mavis, telling him how good it was to see him again, sharing bro hugs and made for the tube. We asked a guy how the hell we could get to Kings Cross and he may as well spoke mumbo jumbo to me, fortunately Glen sussed it. We use the Northern Line to Euston and the Victoria line to King Cross or something like that.

Again it took ages to find the right platforms but again, Glen done a sterling job, by about half 9, maybe a bit earlier, we were at Kings Cross, the place was all boarded, with the rebuilding work, after the fire, have to admit it was quite an eary place, knowing what had happened there. One thing we all shared, we were starving, we went in search of food and found a burger bar/kebab shop, after a good 10mins searching, then got completely lost goig back, whilst demolishing our burgers and chips and rather conveniently ended up at Euston not Kings Cross. it was after 10, Glen said, we're not leaving till half 11, so we popped into Euston station, for a quick look round and managed to click a couple of 86/4's before whizzing down the tube station back to Kings Cross. A few of our coach party where already there, we manged to go and pick off some more units, as well as some HST stock, there was a 47 and a 31 stabled at the North end, we got the numbers but for the life of me I cant remember which ones, before making our way over to the awaiting coach. The rest of the party arrived a bit worse for wear having been on the pop in some bars near Kings Cross, over the mic, the main man, slurred is everyone on? after Aye had been shouted, he repled, then we'll go home now.

We were on that coach, asking those around what they'd did, some went down to Eastleigh, some to Bletchley, others just went round the Stations picking off units and such like, we talked for about 20mins before we zonked. I was dissapointed we'd never got to Paddington but we'd had a great laugh with Mavis, got ourselves a 33, a 50 and a pair of 73's in the bag for haulage, not to mention all the cops we'd got in the afternoon and on the way down. maybe I was getting a bit greedy. I was also hoping we'd stop off somewhere on the way home, however everyone zonked out, I woke up as we were dropping folk off on Teeside, so the journey home flew over. An hour later I was in my pit at home, after a coffee and 4 slices of toast. I was there till my little brother came up about half 2 in the afternoon and woke me and said, Dad said, do you want a sunday dinner putting out, I grunted, aye please and staggered downstairs, to some kind of some sunday roast with all the trimmings.

Was a great trip, plenty of cops indeed, however we'd only scratched the surface in London but it took a bloody dogs age to mark in what I'd scored there. Now we had an inkling of what to do next time, god knows where John and I wouldve ended up if it wasn't for Glen sussing the tube, probably in Mavis's house:lol::lol::lol:

An excellent final read! I sympathise with the marking out of stuff. On my recent trip to London, it took me over two hours although that was with a movie on in the background.

Wow, I can only imagine how fun that would have been! 50s thrashing their guts out on the mainline I have sampled 9 and a bit years ago, the 33s were grand too on a different tour but out of the two I prefer 50s.

I'll not pretend to understand the Geordie

Bloody fantastic read as always good sir!

"ye knaa lads, Im glad yis are doon here, its nice to hear a geordie voice, I git sick of repeating me-sel"

Mavis was saying, you know lads, I'm glad you's are down here, it's nice to hear a geordie voice, I get sick of repeatig myself.
Nor, is no, just the way its said and had, as in, had on, had onto this or that, basically is another word for hold. Probably clear as mud. Sure, rg177 will know what i was on about lol

Many thanks tech, much appreciated.

Yes, a very good read, and covering two of my favourite loco classes - slight preference for the 33s, lovely hard bark to the exhaust. It might have been 40 years ago, but I can still see and hear one with nine Mk1's in tow going flat-out over the flyover at Worting Junction...yes, that was me standing by the open window in the front carriage :)

Another top bit of nostalgia there, nice one.
And yes, having spent several years as a kid living in North Yorkshire, watching Tyne-Tees television & Look North with Mike Neville I understood it all :)

Loved it as usual, proper good time with proper good machinery it seems :)

I can't imagine the younger bashers writing in 20 years about the "hellfire" EMUs of 2015... ;)

Don't apologise. I wish I had kept more notes from my trips from Liverpool to London to do stuff like the 50's up and down from Waterloo to Woking, Basingstoke etc. Lots of fun. Have loved reading your memoirs. :)

Mike Neville - local news on Look North ( PROPER Look North - not that silly Leeds one!) and North East Tonight on iTV for 40 years! A north east institution.

He always seemed a consummate professional and a proper, old school, newsreader & presenter who seemed to be able to connect with people at every level and convey news and stories to viewers with ease and with wit.

Perhaps some posters ought to look out his Larn Yersel' Geordie recordings!

Id love to hear their attempts at the Geordie accent from the larn taself geordie but for those of you who wish they could speak it, heres a couple of links for you to practice, while at home. Lord Tram just managed to understand me a good while back, maybe this will help, for the overnighter.

A Few bits n Bobs, I can remember

I think I've shared the story of how I got back into the hobby again before but a quick synopsis would be, after a nearly a decade out the game, it was an N-Powered livery 59, I saw whilst walking my dog, intrigued me enough, to go back onto the bridge overlooking Tyne Yard, for the first time since, I'd walked away from the hobby.

I briefly sat at on the fence at the end of the bridge, looking along the line, thinking of how many friends and I, had sat here, John, Glen, Mavis, Cal, Maxy et al and I spent bloody hour upon on hour here. I snapped out of my day dream and went and had a word with a guy stood in the middle of the bridge. I asked about the 59 and what the huge clump of 37's were doing in the middle of the Yard, as well as asking if there was anything worth seeing due in.

I spent a good hour watching stuff go back n forth, that day, these yellow and maroon things on coal trains and 60's on the Limestone and Steel trains, the next day I bought a little notebook and started writing numbers down agaiin, needless to say, my dog Butch, got walked 3 times a day to Tyne Yard and back, on days off where I had nothing planned. I also thought I'd better get a new book, after a sort through boxeses of old railway stuff, I found my platform 5 was well out of date, this little beauty a combined book from 1992.

Fast forward a few weeks and I was gradually spending any free time around the North East Railway scene

Those National Power liveried 59s were certainly eye catching, especially with a matching rake of coal hoppers. It's a shame that the operation was so short lived.

I remember there being some trial runs out of Wardley with National Power 59s and hopper rakes, although I don't know whether they ever led to any revenue earning loaded services. It was only some years after I became aware of the NP 59s that I found out that they had worked as far up as my locality for a short period! :(

[/IMG] with the 60's and 66's were enough to get the odd cop locally here and there.

Wasnt till a fair few years later, I stopped working late shifts, I started getting days off midweek too, which meant I had more time to see more freight. Id say 2006 was when i got fully back into the hobby again.

I remember standing down Tyne Yard one day, I was told the West Coast diverts were on this week, meaning we'd get extra freight trains through, namely the intermodal traffic, seeimg pairs of 86's whizz through was a nice sight indeed. A Serco Test train came by top n tailed by 2 47's, nothing too startling I imagine some folk saying, well it was for me but ok, its nothing too spectacular, until next morning, when I get down to Tyne Yard and theres 2 intermodal trains parked up in there and the in and out lines are full. I ask if the modals have failed and Im told the SERCO Test train we saw yesterday, pulled the wires down, just North of Doncaster and blocked the lines, meaning all trains are stnding waiting to come through, he said he'd been there since 8am and this lot has come in and I got there at 10am. Throughout the next 4 hours or so, those of us standing there, saw freight after freight either come in the Yard or change crews on the slow line, Im ot kidding when I say we must've saw around 30 different locos in that 4 hr period, it was THE best day I'd ever had at Tyne Yard, even including the mid 80's.

I then was told that Class 92's ran through the night, one north and one south about 1 and 1.30am, my 92's were very thin on the ground, so I devised a plan to get em. If you stand on the bridge at Tyne Yard and look North theres another bridge a mere 500 yds away, that carries the A167(i thnkj)over it. I knew a path way to get under it and you could sit on the grass bank and watch stuff go by, plus theres a signal at the points, which showed two dots and the line to take into the yard, it would show F, Y or M, when something was coming. So when I finished work and had the next day off, I made out the house at 11.30pm, packed my bag with a torch, bog roll, just in case, wipes, flask and a few sarnies and off on the 10minute walk down to the said bridge.

Fortunately the floodlights at the North end of the yard offered sufficient light to see stuff, along with the light from above from the lamp posts on the motorway, there was just enough light to make out the numbers, I mean it sounds mad but I managed to get more than half my voyagers without travelling, I got a good 20% of the 92's there, a fair few sheds and both the NR Ice breaking 86's, so it wasn't in vain. Funniest incident came when i was sitting and I could hear rustling in the long grash and dense bushes, I put it down to Rabbits, of which there was loads down there, however nature called, so i got the wipes out my bag, moving my sandwiches on top of the bag, whilst i went for a jimmy riddle, hence wipes for hands after. Im mid flow about 20yds at most from my bag, when I saw what I thought was a dog sniffing my bag, I focussed my eyas to see a bloody fox bugger off with my bloody ham sarnies. I told a few of my fellow cranks, later that afternoon and majority had seen a fox in the yard itself, just as the light would begin to fade. I seen it another time, walking on the lines with a rabbit in its mouth, thinking to myself, oh you've gone off ham now.

Like I said, I promised myself a journey out, to further than Darlington where, just after I'd got back into the hobby in 2001, I made the odd pilgrinage, when i finished early enough to get out to scratch a long standing itch, the Bristol-Newcastle XC Loco Hauled turn, I remember vividly being dead excited, riding a tram to Darlington, not for the tram either but for a booked 47 turn, 47805 turned up and it was just heaven, I got a few more too, 47812, 817 and 830, readily spring to mind, however, unfortunately, they had bit the dust now too.

I booked a weeks holiday and didnt even think about Rovers etc, I just decided I'm going to Crewe. I got up early on the Tuesday or Wednesday and got to Central and paid for a day return to Crewe, sure it was about £59 at the time. I jumped on a blunt to Doncaster got a voyager to Sheffield and an HST to Derby, I can stand corrected but I think it was a London Mainline one, certainly wasn't EMT, well if it was, it wasn't the livery theyre in now. The only number I can remember for haulage on that trip was 150120 to Crewe. I remember the first thing I saw after alighting the HST was 45112. I laughed and said under my breath, god I've never seen one of you in a long time, by your an ugly f!"£^*r, it wasnt all bad, I cleared my 31s again, 31554 in InterCity livery was parked up to, with 47580 and 33103. I had an hour or so here before I set off to Crewe. CD was a pale shadow of itself, it was still a fairly decent day there, there were a number of units, that were all cops, especially the 350's, not to mention the Pendolinos too. I also seen my first bodysnatcher there, all i could think was, what have you done, what have you done? After a couple of hours I jumped aboard a pendolino for a maiden voyage on them, have to say they were and still are ok to me, ok they're not an 81,85, 86 or 87, even a 90 but as rides go theyre ok, would've still liked a proper sparky though.

On the way up to Carlisle I copped a gronk, 67026 and a 92 at Warrington, i would've loved to bail there but time was against me. I got up to Carlisle, had about an hour and a half there before jumping on 156444 to go home. My first real trip out afar im a dogs age and I loved every minute of it too. I was hooked again.

I visited bpth Tyne Yard and Central station in equal measure, again whenever possible. However in 2007, I started a new relationship, it got real serious too, so much so a year later, after a weekend away in Edinburgh, well not straight after, a few months down the line, I was imformed I was gonna be a Dad. We moved in together and money for the railway trips suddenly died on it ass and even more so when the daughter arrived. I was happy as Larry, I've been called some names but none whatsoever beats being called Dad, even if I could choke her at times, any parent will understand what I mean here, when you hear, Dad, can I, dad will you, dad have you etc etc:lol::lol: I got out to look at trains but never travelled far, my girlfriend said I was sad but i just ignored her.

Unfortunately we split too, in short we ended up hating living with each other, I hated leaving my daughter but I'd have been committed by now if I'd stayed. Fortunately my daughters a Daddys girl and loves nothing better than going out anywhere with her Dad. Still the ex threw one of her many tantrums and when I didnt jump to clear my stuff out the house now, I said, how can i come now, Im at bloody work, adding, Id come down after work and clear it out, oh no, the bitch got all my train related gear, old notebooks, platform 5's, the full kit n kaboodle put them in a bin with some clothes and trainers and torched the lot, gave my bino's away to her Dad, who flogged them and my camera went mysteriously couldn't be found. GUTTED WASNT THE WORD. Fortunately I'd took my current platform 5 book when I left the house, so at least I didn't have to start from scratch but all those records and memories went up in smoke. Quite Litterally. We get along now, however she still has the odd hissy fit but i just ignore her and leave her be.

A few years on and i joined this forum, at first rarely straying from the Nostagia thread BUT since straying into the trips and planning thread, i have to say, it's been a driving force into me straying far and wide, into putting huge dints into my requirements nationwide, ok I'm not ready to break out the rail atlas and ride out between shacks to scratch them all off, one things for sure I have huge respect for all you who do. So next time you see this loco, albeit its got different pyjamas these days, remember, this was probably responsible for me boring you all half to death, with this thread and post
