I'm travelling Abergavenny - Paddington and notice a lack of advance tickets for this journey. Is there some dispute between the two train companies so that few if any adv. tickets are offered? I'm going in august and know they're not out yet but looking at dates coming up there are none. But to Newport there are lots.

General rule of thumb with advance purchase is anything over a weekend or when theirs events on disappear as soon as they go on sale. Try traveling over a Wednesday lunchtime and you can usually get them.

If i had £10 for every time I had to explain..............

Unfortunately, this seems to be a case where even looking offpeak midweek does not help. The only through Advances I can find on a weekday involve using the 0551 to Newport and either asking for a route via Bristol Temple Meads (£31) or via Gloucester (£24.50). I can't find any coming back.

Do you mean FROM Newport to Padd? For a month ahead that's what's showing for me. That could be because of the temporary timetable NWP-AGV?

Yes I meant Newport to Padd. Interesting to know about a route via Glos.

I notice that the 0551 is the only unreservable service between AGV and NWP. I wonder if this is relevant.

Similarly in the reverse, the last service from NWP to AGV is unreservable, and has Advance tickets available for through journeys from PAD.

Probably, one trick I have when booking advance tickets is to add "stop at" at stations which unreservable trains call and it quite often broadens my horizons (e.g. Watford to Penzance, "stop at" Carpenders Park puts you on a LOROL service to Queens Park, to change there for Paddington and Penzance, whereas to Euston puts you on a reservable service which is shown as full!)
