Thanks for your imput everyone, i'm looking to go early May and from my neck of the woods I can get a day return Preston - York for £27 ! No brainer and cheaper than taking the car !

On the point of donations, I've no problem with this as without our support, places like the NRM could struggle to fund quality exhibitions / attractions or even struggle to stay open, then all just becomes a vicious circle.

It is well worth a visit and there is lots of other things to do in York. Happy to recommend pubs ;)

There are lots of moaners about the exhibits but to me they always look really good and offer a wide range of history and interest.

Yes, York is a great place to visit, there are plenty of general tourists there to keep the museum busy

Evening everyone,

I'm thinking of taking a trip to the NRM in the next couple of weeks, since its been close to 20 years since I last went. So basically I just wanted to get opinions as to whether it's still worth a visit given their recent funding issues etc ?

Sure is worth a visit. I went over the Easter weekend and stood on the footplate of the Flying Scotsman!. There is a Scotsman exhibition on at the moment if that's what you are interested in and theres a Mallard simulator (£5) I think to go in that, but I thought was well worth it and its all revenue for the NRM, Theres always something to please everyone and I don't mind paying £5 each to go in as a donation.

The alternative to donating is to buy your lunch from the excellent café/restraunt in the Station Hall, and then exchange a few £££ in the gift shop on the way out (although some stuff in there can be pricey)

A typical commuter-belt part of north-west England
The Warehouse at the National Railway Museum has the original full size Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway signalling school railway layout and also has a vast number of historical artifacts that cover many aspects of the railways.

The cooked meals in the platform situated restaurant have always been enjoyable when we have ordered them there.

The York station is a brilliant place for a drink before your train home, you can even enter it from both outside and the platforms!
Fantastic pub, not much good for a proper feed though, outside of their magnificent selection of pork pies and scotch eggs (which I'm confident I could make a proper meal out of anyway!) :D.

For food I'd recommend The Graduate, because it's reasonably priced and does decent ales and a good burger, The White Swan because its' a Nicholsons with excellent traditional décor that does a decent range of ale and a (more expensive) good burger, and there's always the Wetherspoons round the corner from the station (to the right, out of the main entrance) by the Micklegate.

With it being York, I'm sure that there are plenty of excellent alternative suggestions. :)

I didn't feel under any pressure to make a donation at the NRM. I think my wife put some money in on the way out as it turned out that despite not really wanting to go, she absolutely loved the place :D

There are so many! All of these pubs are 5-10 minutes from the station/museum. You need to go back through the station as there isn't anything on the Museum side. These are all decent ale pubs and most offer some kind of food.

The Tap on the station is good and reassuringly free of chavs. Not the cheapest but the ale range is wide as is lager and cider. You wont find any big brands in here. No food beyond a pork pie but VERY good pies!

The Maltings is also good for drinking and does as small menu of cheapish pub food : http://maltings.co.uk/

Brigantes is another good spot. Decent ale and a decent menu: http://www.brigantesyork.co.uk/

Three Legged Mare: http://www.york-brewery.co.uk/Pubs/The-Three-Legged-Mare is the closet of the York Brewery pubs in York

If you are a Weatherspoons man the punch bowl will serve the usual fare: https://www.jdwetherspoon.com/pubs/all-pubs/england/north-yorkshire/the-punch-bowl-york

I might also suggest the the Fox next to Holgate Works but it is a walk in the wrong direction: http://www.ossett-brewery.co.uk/pubs/fox-york although the bus outside will take you back to the station.

If you want to go further/have time there are many more in the old central part of York.

I've always wanted to visit the NRM but never had the opportunity.

Is it doable in a day travelling from Tamworth?

How much can I expect to pay for the train fares?

How far is it from York station?

Many thanks.

If you consider a little over a couple of hours each way to be doable, then yes. I've done it as a day trip from Surrey a couple of times, which is rather longer, but which still gave me a good few hours for what I wanted to do. It's up to you how much you want to cram in. I usually go for some sort of special exhibition and then look at a couple of other normal exhibits of interest. There's a lot there, but it's not overwhelming if you don't want it to be!

Regarding fares - you'd be better off asking someone more knowledgeable than I about ticketing in your part of the country, preferably on the appropriate Fares subforum.

It's right next to York station, signposted from the footbridge. The NRM actually has a rather draughty viewing gallery overlooking the station platforms!

Depends how long you want there, I did it from Tamworth over Easter on my way back from a trip to Leeds and Harrogate and had two hours at the NRM, I could have easily stayed longer but Flying Scotsman was there at the time so it was too busy to enjoy properly...

I'll admit, it was too busy for me, not being able to move really wound me up after a while, though I understand it was Easter bank holiday and the FS was there so it was always going to be busy.

It's probably a five minute walk from York station, well sign posted.

I ate (and drank) very well at the Exhibition last week before a funeral... set me up quite well for the ordeal.
