If what you say is true, then heaven help the continuation of lowering of education comprehension matters that has taken place since the end of the Second World War, fostered by a general lowering of standards in Britain, where pandering to the lowest of respect acceptance appears to be the norm.

Perhaps you need to watch an episode or two of The Jeremy Kyle Show, Celebrity Juice, and other like television programmes, to see how matters have plummeted.

I'm sure you enjoy sitting there reminiscing of the good old days and Victorian values, but despite what you believe the world has moved on. You might not like it, but some people these days have a sense of humour (although looking through your posting history this is probably lost on you)!

I'm not quite sure where calling a boat "Boaty McBoatface" is "pandering to the lowest of respect acceptance", when it's just a bit of fun. I bet you never watched any of the classic comedies like Monty Python, you'd have been absolutely seething seeing some of their humour! I know that, from the Victorian times that you clearly hold dear, everything seems new, but this sort of humour has been around for well over 40 years, and is not a modern phenomenon.

Quite frankly, the fact that many thousands of people have voted for it and there's just one grumpy old man grumbling about it on a train forum probably says that they're right.

I will always fight to ensure the standards of adult appreciation of the niceties of the English Language are kept to the fore, so if that is said to be trolling, then a sad day has dawned for the onward move to a better civilisation...

Do you speak Shakespearean English? If not, then why aren't you ensuring THOSE standards? It is patently obvious that languages evolve, whether you want it to or not.

My complaint about Boaty McBoatface is that it's not funny enough. Surely a nation with such a rich comedic history could come up with something coruscatingly witty.

Why would you think that the use of the English language that you use is better than what preceded it then? Or are you saying that it hit a level and shouldnt be changed or will you admit that English has always changed as time has progressed?

Speak, no. Comprehension, most certainly so.

Let me give a good example of the wordcraft of The Bard himself that shows standards were indeed high so many years ago, by the following brief extract which is taken from The Merchant of Venice, Act IV, Scene I....
"The quality of mercy is not strained,
It droppeth like the gentle dew from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest;
It blesseth him that that gives and him that takes"

A change that evolves into a betterment of what went before is something that should be the norm. A change that then lowers the standards of what went before is not something to celebrate...

Shouldn't that be "Comprehend" in this context?

Betterment is subjective, who is the arbiter? Unless I'm misinformed it is not Paul Sidorczuk.

At least management seem to be backing you. Our lot would be a no tea and biscuit chat.

I am ex SWT and was dragged over the coals for putting 'good morning <name>'on the internal displays for 2 minutes, obviously Fratton Managers are a bit more easy going/ realistic than they are up Lundun way.

What on Earth are you on about? Like most people I am aware of Shakespeare, and so, I suspect, are those who have enough of a sense of humour to suggest "Boaty McBoatface" as the name of the ship.

Either you're deliberately steering this off-topic in an attempt to troll, or you don't understand what this discussion is about in the first place.

And why should you be the sole arbiter of what betters the language? If we're relying on a grumpy old man who belittles any attempt at humour to decide whether a change to the language is beneficial then I suggest THAT would make us more of a laughing stock than a witty boat name.

...or mostly ignored like L'Académie française.

And you think that people having a little joke at the naming of a ship actually lowers the standards? Im sorry Paul but you really are making yourself look more silly with each passing post.

That'll be your depot for you, it's a bit weird... :p ;) Looks like it's different at the other end of the BML as well as each end of SWT routes. Obviously we can't do that on Electrostars, only spoof destinations, but I can't see our crews in the London area getting into trouble for doing that sort of stuff if it's at a reasonable time, eg. at the end of a journey, or on ECS. I've rocked up at a certain London terminus on more than one occasion with silly destinations on the boards, and "Test Train", "No catering service"... you name it! Most of the time it's amused at least one person. Certainly never any managerial feedback.

I was ready not to make a further posting upon this matter, until I read what you have said above. I have been a member of this website since April 2011 and not once in all that time have I been accused of trolling.

I do indeed know what this thread discussion is about. It is the type of childish attempts at humour that annoyed me. My name for this ship would be RSS Shackleton Endurance.

Whilst we can only aspire to the level of erudite sophistication displayed in your posts us simple plebeians have to find humour where we can in order to escape the mundane drudgery of our otherwise humdrum, prosaic, banal and tedious little lives.

We aspire one day to be free to experience and cherish the high culture of Glyndebourne and Covent Garden, of the RSC & the Old Vic and of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra but alas our simple dress, coarse manners and low station prevent us from entering such bastions of culture and civility. Sigh.

Until that glorious day we must try to make the best of what is available to us via the music halls and variety acts and cheap comedians that tell simple jokes that we can understand.

My point, under all that sarcasm, is that to judge people as being less than civilised or educated for allowing a mildly funny suggestion to give a boat a little bit of a silly name is not really on and reflects badly. People like different things in life and whilst, of course ,you are welcome to express your view don't be surprised when the oiks try to defend themselves ;)

I'm guessing if we take this to its logical conclusion of oldest being best then grunting and cave painting are the true pinnacle of human communication.

I'll need to brush up on my Latin perhaps.

Actually I quite like Paul Sidorczuk's idea of naming the ship after a famous explorer, my suggestion is RRS Fuchs (after Sir Vivian of course), that has a nice ring to it and there's no possibility of it causing any amusement.

I know it is for the north, but if they ever send it south, I bet the Argies would hate it if we gave it the name Conqueror

From what I've seen of kids in recent times I reckon that grunting has made a big comeback actually, not sure whether they're up to cave painting though ....

Better still - not to have run the bloody poll in the first place. There have been plenty of lessons in recent times.

Yeah, these things invariably get ruined.

Would have been better to allow people to vote from a short list.
