Courtesy of a Rail Media Group photographer, there are now several pictures of the Class 378 Capitalstars being built and fitted out in the Bombardier factory at Litchurch Lane. The first pictures of 001 on test are included.

Hmph. I'm not a fan. A few things immediately spring to mind - a) the upholstery unlike other TfL moquettes will at least look better with vomit on it, b) what's wrong with a gangway in the middle of the cab and c) the whole yellow front on the traditional TfL livery looks... well... like something First group would dream up as a 'good' livery

Looks just as awful!

I think the door on the front is there so that in case of emergency, the passengers can leave the train in the tunnel sections, particularly on the single bore Brunel Tunnels between Rotherhithe and Wapping, and also between Wapping and Shadwell!

eww, don't like the decor. Like the look of the outside, looks a bit oriental, like the Merseyrail 508s. Will these units have whistles, because all LU stock don't have horns and have whistles. These trains are also being tested at Old Dalby - so I'll have to pop down there when they are :)

OK, that interior is horrendous. And the space in the carriage is rather unnerving too. And it looks pretty bad on the front...

Bombardier really has failed on this. Let's hope the trains perform well because, if they don't, there's gonna be a lotta unhappy commuters...

Nice and spacious though - it's what they need, so we can't knock them for actually building a train that looks like it will achieve the purpose it was built for. Unlike certain other new stock on the network!

I doubt it's Bombardier's fault it's so poor, more like TfL's because I suspect they supplied the specification.

The gangway at the front IMO breaks up the nice clean lines and front which the turbostars have. It is purely an aesthetic view, and if the units do their job, in terms of transporting large numbbrs of people reliably and swiftly on their commuterland journeys.

I don't think the emergency door front end looks much worse than the front of the 376s- which is what these were always going to be closest in looks to. Though I'm not sure why the 376s and 378s don't have "proper" gangways allowing passengers to move between coupled units- anyone able to shed light on this?. It is, after all, perfectly possible on the Electrostar platform (classes 375 and 377)

These are mainline trains - not London Underground units - so of course they will have horns and these will be what are used when out and about.

That said Electrostars do have whistles, however these are only for use in depots and suchlike rather than out on the mainline.

It's a safety requirement, as there going to be running on ex-LU lines when the ELL reopens, single bore tunnels and the like.

Fair point; TfL will have selected the horrendous interior, and they have to have an escape up front too. But my point still stands; I don't particularly like them. Although, as I implied earlier, it certainly ain't entirely Bombardier to blame.

They fulfill teh aim ffor commuter journeys, especially in London - like a surface tube interior - lots of standing space and grab rails/handles.

Bombardier have just built the thing up to the specification from the TfL. I'm sure the unit is built well. Which is their main concern.

duno why 376s don't have CCs, they look wierd as they have a 3-piece windscreen too.

Because they don't have guards IIRC.

Not sure why 378s don't as they will have guards won't they? But I believe 376s don't as they are DOO.

My opinion on the unit is, yeah it looks like it can carry lots of passengers. But mostly standing as seen on the underground, is there a mix of seats though?

Yep! My Mum once had a dress in a similar pattern!

The same could be achieved though with a corridor connection.

I'm going to saying something quite daring, I like it.

Interior is very poor though and the Thames Television Network Control Centre seems to relocated to the drivers cab..

FWIW All trains operating on NR Metals need to have a fully functioning 2 tone horn except some P-Way equipment and Steam Locos.

Blasphemy, that moquette was the best. Good to see that these dont completely look like the 376s but i still dont agree with the seating layout but doing away with the internal doors is a good move imo...

Stagecoach Lancaster's old Titans went around like that until the very last. They were exactly like that when they were withdrawn from service, June I think it was.
