Quite a few of the Cumbrain Coast services are in the hands of 37+Mk2+DBSO so approch with care.

They're alright on long welded rail and scenic rural routes and branches, but for ferrying large numbers of passengers into our provincial cities they've really exceeded their stay of execution.

Huddersfield to Wakefield has two units that stay on most of the day, on weekdays usually both 2-car pacers but Saturdays can throw up a 150 or even a 155. The Leeds stopper is usually a 3/144 plus a Sprinter, but these seem to interwork with other services more. The once-a-day Southport to Leeds is usually a 150+142.

For all the Pacer aficionados on here, are you aware of the BLS railtour from Manchester Piccadilly on 6th March.

2x142 for traction and covering such rarities as Stockport Carriage Sidings, Newton Heath Depot, Holbeck Depot Leeds, plus a traverse of the Brewery Curve at Miles Platting, with lots of other rare track included, there should be some gut wrenching screaming and bouncing available for those who appreciate such things on this tour.

And just to add, there is a trolley service available so perhaps a wetsuit is a requirement for this tour

In all seriousness though it sounds a most interesting day out.

I went on a 142 once on the 13:44 York-Hull (the 10:08 outbound from Hull was a 158) and as it is between 2 cities plus it was pre-refurbishment (the old bus-bench seats, if you remember, not the single 2+2) it was awful (Note: it was on the mainline, Hull-York services use the Hull & Selby line to Selby, then they join the Castleford lines at Sherburn-in-Elmet, and then the Leeds-York line at Church Fenton and the ECML at Colton Jn.

My local service still gets regular Pacer services operated by 142s with the original seating. The route includes a very sharp bend, 75mph running, running on adjacent track to Pendolinos travelling at higher speeds and running over some farmer crossings - in all 4 of those situations Pacers are worse than Sprinters. They bounce more, they do a deafening squeal on sharp bends, they are slow to accelerate to 75mph (especially if there's a crush loading) and you feel the force of other trains passing at speed more.

I know what you mean... especially stopping at every single stop in the East Riding, with hardly any passengers, having faster services passing you, going round curves, the slow acceleration, all that.

£72 for non BLS members, perhaps fully subscribed by now anyway, would have gone myself but I'm away that weekend, infact I'll probably be returning on a pacer (of the scheduled variety) on that very day.

Reason I know is so that I can avoid the dreaded 158s as much as I can. Rather a bumpy Pacer any day than a 158! Hope the new Northern Franchise takes them away from the Calder Valley line!

Doubt that would go down well at all to be honest! Whats wrong with a 158?

Usually connected to a 150 but occasionally a pair of 142s.
Reason I dislike the 158s is because of the state they are in. Would you ever want to go in to a building with a carpet so unbelivably filthy that its sticky? They also leak diesel fumes through the air con whilst going through tunnels. Some have a sickly whurring noise too!

They are all 142 diagrams

Ormskirk is a Sprinter Diagram but is literally a 153 most of the time I believe.
