I want to go from Liverpool Street to Oxford. Can I use a London Terminals to Oxford Ticket on the tube between LST and PAD or must I buy a London Underground Zone 1 to Oxford ticket?

What confuses me is that BR Fares suggest the Terminals ticket but the Southern website says both tickets are only valid from:

London Victoria
London Waterloo
London Cannon Street
London Charing Cross
London Blackfriars
London Waterloo East
Vauxhall
London Bridge
London Paddington
City Thameslink

A London Terminals to Oxford ticket will not cover Liverpool Street to Paddington by underground. Either buy a zone 1 to Oxford ticket as you suggest, or use Oyster/contactless between Liverpool Street and Paddington.

BR Fares isn't a route planner. It doesn't take into account how you can get between the stations. It just looks up the members of the London Terminal group and displays them, even if there are no permitted routes from some of them,

A London Underground Zone 1 to Oxford would be valid for the journey you wish to make.
It's named in the ticket system as ZONE U1* LONDN to OXFORD

BR Fares is neither a route planner nor the official fares guide. All it is is a (very useful) database of fares available.

When you look up the fare on National Rail Enquiries it says which terminals you can use the ticket from.

This is what confused me. Not stated as being valid from LST:

That's because it isn't.

It is valid from the other stations listed, due to a variety of weird and wonderful routes in south London you can take to link in to the Waterloo-Reading train.

ETA: Just saw that was with an origin of U1.

That website is misleading. It means you can make a single journey from any zone 1 tube station to one of the London Terminals listed, and then on to Oxford. All those London Terminals are valid for tickets to Oxford because of the various routes allowing you to eventually catch the Waterloo-Reading train.

That's incorrect. Is that from the new Southern website? The text about valid London terminals should only be displayed for a ticket issued with an origin station of "London Terminals", not from Zone 1. The Zone 1 ticket is valid from any Underground station in Zone 1, Liverpool Street included.

OFF PEAK DAY S
From ZONE U1* LONDN
To OXFORD
Route ANY PERMITTED
This is valid from ANY Zone 1 LU station (including Liverpool Street LU) to any of the terminals listed above by London Underground, and thence to Oxford. (It's also valid to interchange at stations such as Ealing Broadway; full details are in our Fares Guide).

Or, for 50p less...

OFF-PEAK DAY S
From BETHNAL GREEN
To OXFORD
Route ✠ANY PERMITTED
...;)

You can save a few more pennies if you are able to restrict yourself to trains that call at Slough, by purchasing an Anytime Day Sinlge from Bethnal Green to Slough, and an Off Peak Day Single from Slough to Oxford. This is suggested by trainsplit.com. One advantage of that over the through fare, is that the first ticket is valid at any time, and so the only restriction is that the train calls at slough "after 0859"

How are you getting to Liverpool Street? Is that the origin of your journey by rail?

That fare of £27.90 includes the underground fare from any zone 1 station (including Liverpool Street) to Paddington - or to any of the other rail terminals listed

The fare from Paddington - or indeed the other terminals - is £24.90 - so you are paying £3 for the tube. Oyster/contactless is cheaper at £2.40, but paying cash would be £4.90

So not actually incorrect but has to be read in a not immediately obvious context

Edit - I see Yorkie's answered in greater detail while I was looking that up

Yes, it's very badly worded. It's trying to say take the tube to any of the station in this list, then National Rail onwards to Oxford (some of which involve a walk from Waterloo East to Waterloo).
The list refers to terminals where you can start the National Rail part of the journey

Thank you. It makes sense now - I can start the journey from anywhere in zone 1 but once I leave zone 1 it must be from one of those stations e.g. I can't get the Central Line to Ealing Broadway and go from there.

Well yorkie seems to think Ealing Broadway is valid, but I'm not so sure. If the ticket was from Zone U123* Londn then I'd agree, but Zone U1* Londn does seem to suggest you must be on National Rail before leaving zone 1.

As MikeWh has hinted at, there is a cheaper ticket that would be appropriate if you want to do that.

It's likely to be Stratford or Mile End (I'll have part of another ticket to take me to Liverpool Street) hence Ealing Broadway being an interesting possibility to avoid changing on the tube for Paddington.

Looking into that, will have to see if the increased journey time form Ealing Broadway to Oxford makes it worthwhile. A ticket that allowed both options would be good.

Agreed. Validity on LU services outside Zone 1 would only be on interavailable routes as this is not a cross-London transfer.

Bear in mind, if you don't fancy changing, that Lancaster Gate is quite close to Paddington and is an easy walk if you don't have a lot of luggage.
