The 508s were first made in 1979, so they are 30 years old next year, which in turn makes them the oldest rolling stock on the Southeastern network. With the introduction of the Thameslink Project and the Class 395s Southeastern will have more newer stock (Networkers - 15 years old and Electrostars - 9 years old) to run in place of the 508s.

coz it's a good loco, but theres a rumor that if it stays at NVR, and the current owner sells it, either HNRC or Hanson Traction will buy it, and do a load of repairs to it, and make it mainline worthy again. (good for tours)

One of the best for me. Always immaculate and sounds pretty damn good IMO. At galas it does tend to suffer from silly pairings but had some cracking runs out of it, an evening one a few years ago stands out.

Does that make it the worst member of the class? From what I see, mechanically and bodywise it is in pretty good nick. If this is the 'worst 40 in pres', then how come it hasn't got rotten bodywork, a failed generator, or cracks in the bogies? (which are just some of the problems other 40 owners are facing)

Quite right. A brand new locomotive at £250,000 is a lot of money to me, to buy a clapped-out one that's now ancient technology would be like throwing money down the drain.
