Trivia: Most 'delayed' train you've seen...

In 50 years of train travel I can't remember ever being more than a couple of hours late. Unlike air travel where I was once 4 hours late on a 20 minute flight (Isle of Man to Liverpool).

I believe US train regulations once stated that a train 24 hours late would no longer be given priority as it would now be "next day's" train!

I'm sure there have been numerous threads on this subject in the past, but my Google fu appears to be weak and I can't find them.

A few years back I spotted a freight on TRUST that had accrued in excess of 1440 delay minutes...Can't remember where it was though. If memory serves, it was possession related. (i.e. The train should have gone through before a possession was taken, but it was late so missed its path and had to wait for it to be lifted before continuing).

I seem to recall that the Golden Hind from Paddington to Penzance was once so delayed that it arrived after the sleeper, so about 9 hours late.
I was on the train, but only as far as Taunton, most of the delay was after I alighted.

I remember a delay of well over an hour on the West Somerset Railway, not bad for a line only about 20 miles in length ! It was however during the diesel gala when several hired or borrowed diesel engines failed.
Eventually rescued by a steamer, oh the ignominy of a diesel being rescued by a steamer.

On Monday I saw the 14:55 to Inverness leaving Newcastle at about 17:20...

Indeed, it eventually arrived Inverness at 00:25, 261 minutes late.
It then left Inverness late on Tuesday morning, probably due to crew rest hours overnight.

Lincoln to Linlithgow charter when Desmond kicked forcing the tour heading to Edinburgh the long way. Got to Edinburgh Waverley about 248 late four hours late at 0208 to 0217 booked 2206 to 2209

Four and a half hours, after the wires fell on top of my train at Carstairs East. Eventually we were evacuated via a ScotRail 156 that nudged up as close as it could get, which took us round to the station. Had to get a cab back to Edinburgh, think I booked off about 5 hours early, though.

I'm fairly sure a colleague of mine was on a service up that way where something similar happened, did part of the infrastructure break a window in one of the carriages by any chance, i seem to remember him mentioning that.

I have every confidence that it will get there one day.
Probably won't be this week though.

Wonder how many have benefited from a train being late? Ie you turn up at a station with plenty of time to spare, but a late train rolls in and you can get to the destination much quicker? Or, even better, it's a connection for the last train, but you are already late so the connection would be missed...but that's running late too so you can get on?

I've had a couple of major delays one being when a car crashed down the embankment north of Northampton and my train the 0620 Rugby - Euston ended up 5 hours late. And last year I was on the 2001 off Crewe to Brum which came to a halt south of stafford due to a fatality at Penkridge, set back to go via the Trent only for the pantograph to become entangled in the wires by Stafford yard, was still there at 1am before they evacuated us onto the lineside, eventually I got back to brum at 4am 7 hours later than I should.

I had that myself a few times. Last year travelling from Plymouth - Southampton was booked to change at Reading, when I got there found out there were severe delays on the Crosscountry services due to problems at Oxford, the train i was booked on was still at Oxford and about 60 late but luckily the train before it was about 45 late into Reading and whilst very full I was able to get to Southampton earlier than I actually should have been. I was fine as I knew with the ticket I had (off-peak single) I was OK but i do wonder how many in these kinds of situations who may think they have to wait for 'their' train.

Same kind of thing happened earlier this year coming from Whitehaven to Manchester. TPE service was severely delayed but as I was on an off-peak return I managed to play hope to train down the WCML and got back only 15 late.
