McDonald's Big Breakfast discontinued

The McDonald's Big Breakfast will be discontinued from 3 February. That's the one with scrambled egg, sausage, muffin and a hash brown.

It has been available since at least the early 90s. I had my first one in Hatfield at the Galleria on a Sunday morning in 1992/3.

I believe it's powdered egg of some kind FWIW.

I half recall they need a special machine/equipment for it (I have had a Big Breakfast when they've said the machine was broken and given me a folded egg from the wraps instead) which is probably why it's going - frees up kitchen space.

The egg for the scrambled egg comes from a 1L carton, all premixed. It is then poured into a shaped container on the teflon coated fryer. There is a special tool they use which then scrambles the cooked egg.

Is any other stuff also being cut? If so it could make significant efficiencies as at present most breakfast stuff is made to order and so can be a bit slow when busy. Years ago there was just the BB, Pancakes and Sausage and about 4 types of McMuffin.

Must admit I rue the (much earlier) passing of the German version, which had a larger portion of egg scrambled with bacon bits and sometimes a special with herbs and tomato too. Yummy. And not all that unhealthy, either.

That's a shame, I used to eat the Big Breakfast a lot when I was younger, and more recently I'd make my own sausage and scrambled egg muffin with it, and take it back to the office where I'd make a tea, as a cheap alternative of buying a meal!

Nowadays more often I order a double and sausage muffin meal with an extra sausage

Judging by Tweets over the last year, it appears that they have been trialling a reduced menu for a while, although I never found anywhere that didn't offer a Big Breakfast. It's a shame that while there have been innovations like touch screen ordering and soon table service, I'll not be visiting them any more soon, at least not before 10.30.

It's also worth noting that following the success in the USA, the breakfast will most likely become all day at some point. McDonalds do still say it won't be the case as their isn't enough room to cook both menus side by side, but they said the same over the pond too. If it ultimately means more income, they'll find a way.

They are also rolling out their gourmet 'signature' collection to many more restaurants. As it was only in 40 or so restaurants for the initial trial, has anyone here sampled the 'signature' collection?

The proceedure hasn't changed in the 8 or so years since I last worked a shift at a macs.
There is a tool known as a scrambler, consisting of 4 square chambers each with a pronged blade inside. This is placed on the grill (in most stores the same one that is used for Quarter Pounders) and liquid egg is poured into each chamber, the scrambler is then moved backwards and forwards over the grill until the egg is cooked.

You would think there would be a big publicity push for the "new menu" even if it is smaller. (It looks like all "stuff on a tray" might go).

When I worked there, making the scrambled egg was a very inefficient manual job. every other item gets put on a timers set. the scrambled egg needed putting in the Scrambler and moving back and forward along the grill to scramble it.

Made from a liquid egg pre-mix, comes in cartons.

Worst selling breakfast item in both branches I worked, although I left 5 years ago, it isn't something you can eat on the go, unlike the rest of the items can be eaten on the go.

I ordered a Big Breakfast yesterday and I was told that they would be stopping them next week, but he didn't know if it was just that McDonald's. I then went to a different location today and after I ordered said that I had heard from another restaurant that the Big Breakfast was being stopped and he said it was the case nationwide.

I tried to ask them on Twitter but they didn't reply.

Apparently they are introducing table service. Can only see that being chaotic. They tend to go to pot when they get busy as they are without having to do waitering as well as serving on tills.

I used table service couple of months ago in Chamonix, France. It seemed quite foolproof as it is combined with the touch screen ordering system, so you specify where you are sitting when ordering. It also avoids language problems as the touch screens can be set to English.

Whilst no fan of said item (or Mcdonalds in general) they would clearly seam to be both on a cost cutting drive and a diversification spree.

The anti McSinic in me says they've finally awoken to the fact that theyr being trounced by other outlets with better burgers!

I tend to go for an all you can eat breakfast if I wake up late so I don't need to get lunch as well.

Table Table/Beefeater/Brewers Fayre is ok for that round here.

McDonalds main meals never fill me up, however Burger King does, always wondered why.

I only wish they would change the format of some of the main station sites (such as Waterloo) so it is a less "free for all" when it comes to queuing.

The McDonalds at Fleet services (and Solstice Park Services (A303 @ Amesbury)) have self-service machines and separate areas to where you order the food and where you are called to collect it (think of it like Argos) which works fine for high turnover locations.

Haven't McDonalds always had a table service. You get to the counter, Order a burger, nuggets, whatever, then get told it will be a few minutes and they will bring it over.
