Liv to EUS 1st class upgrade

Hi

Travelling Liv to Lon next Monday on a really cheap advance fare. Is there a reasonable cost of upgrading to 1st class seats? Time is about midday so presumably not busy.

On a Monday there are no on-board upgrades so the cheapest option will probably be to change your advance ticket to the cheapest available first advance, but I doubt it'll be cheap with this much notice and it'll be a £10 admin fee.

The £10 admin fee isn't applied in this case. Only CrossCountry charge it for STD-1ST changes.

The guard would most likely be willing to excess you to the First Off-Peak Single (£115) if you were to ask.

Depending on the train and the ticket the OP has, it could be very cheap. A first class advance on the 11.43 and the 12.47 look like they're still available at £42. If the OP had bought an advanced for say £25, and if there's no admin charge, that would be a £17 upgrade?

Amazing, didn't realise VWC did these. There are no off peak first tickets from Crewe, or the Manchester, Lancaster or Holyhead branches.

AFAIAA It's just West Midlands, Runcorn and Liverpool. There are some Off-Peak First tickets priced by East Coast from Edinburgh.

If you pass an open ticket office where you could have done it before boarding the rules are a little different to doing it before travel. It's all a mess and there's no real consistency across the board, but for travel on the correct train using an Advance the £10 shouldn't be charged, if done before travel.

Are these valid via the WCML? Even if they are I'm not that sure what the relevance is because they're nearly as expensive as some West Coast First Anytimes. Sensible pricing policies all over the country offer Off-Peak First.

Wait a minute. You wantes to change the date? This does attract fees, and it is clear. The OP would be changing the class but not the date or time - this does not attract a fee with the exception of XC.

I was only referring to Newcastle, Darlington and York. So that's that one answered.

As I recall, the Liverpool to London FSS (First Off-Peak Single) was originally £170 when it was introduced around 3 years ago. Virgin soon realised this was too high. It cut the fare to £110 around 1 year later. The fare has since risen to £115. While still around triple the price of standard class for a return journey, they aren't that bad value, particularly as the First Off-Peak Single fares are half the price of the First Off-Peak Return fares (rather than £1 less), permitting good value combinations of First Anytime and First Off-Peak tickets, or First Advance and First Off-Peak tickets.

To clarify: The £10 fee does not apply (except on CrossCountry) when upgrading from a Standard Advance to First Class on the same train, regardless of whether you do so at a Ticket Office or on train.

A London-Liverpool off-peak first ticket costs less than the cheapest first class ticket from London to Chester or Warrington, or Nuneaton for that matter.

If they weren't half the price, I expect they'd have had some "FSH" tickets (or something like that) which were.
