Oyster PAYG Gatwick to Farringdon

Hi all,

What fare is charged for a trip using Oyster PAYG from Gatwick to Farringdon using Thameslink?

As Farringdon is not a London Terminals station I assume it will be the Zone 1 fare £16.20/£10.20 (peak/off-peak).

TfL's Single Fare Finder says it will be £14.00/£8.00 as if Farringdon qualified for the London Terminals fare.

I would expect the Single Fare Finder to be correct. I haven't tried Farringdon but so far every Oyster trip I've tried from Gatwick has been charged correctly according to the TfL site.

That Thameslink site you linked to is hopelessly uninformative too, and misses out a huge amount of information - such as that there are daily caps in place (but not for gatwick express).

Oyster fares will not be able to obey the Routeing Guide, so I agree with the others that you should follow what the SFF says.

The £14.00/£8.00 fare is the fare between Gatwick Airport and any station in Zone 1 by rail only. It therefore applies when using Thameslink to Farringdon.

The £16.20/£10.20 fare is the fare between Gatwick Airport and any station in Zone 1 by mixed mode, e.g. rail and tube. It therefore applies when travelling by rail to a London terminal then continuing to Farringdon by tube.

Really?

OK. Where it gives fares they are correct, but there are loads of missing fares for unusual journeys which the live Oyster system somehow manages to calculate correctly at the time. Example: Crayford to Fenchurch Street.

As far as Oyster is concerned, if the journey is entirely on National Rail then the NR only fares apply. You can add Farringdon, St Pancras International, Cannon Street, Waterloo East and Charing Cross to the list on that page.

There is a quirk where you can travel to Farringdon via Whitechapel and be charged the NR Oyster/Contactless fare from stations on the ELL extension. However it only works off-peak without touching in at the pink reader at Canada Water or Whitechapel now as the peak NR fare from Forest Hill is now £3.40, to save 10p (£3.30 TfL fare), the pink reader is required during peaks.
