You already putting my one Devon Day Ranger to shame! I won't be out for a proper day until 19th Jan. Then as you know the 27th (hopefully you can join me)! I really must write up my last three trips of 2015 but I have such little time at the moment.
Maybe but some of your trips last year put me to shame!
If I can join you I'll let you know
Kite159: Aye it was good to see you again too. Same applies to hassaanhc too, a good few hours had whittling down our lists!
Trip report is not even close to ready sorry guys, tablet is at least on charge to get the typing up done on the way home. It's been a helluva great day, but that 0430 alarm is going to be a killer. It's tempting to pop out again in a bit...

OK then here we go guys! It's another massive 6 page read!
10/01/2016 - Green Eyed Tech, Day 1
After a tough day at work yesterday, this trip was definitely needed! I'll get right on with explaining this trip's title, before you all ask what it's about. As regulars on the trip reports sector will know, there's been several members having trips to London in the last couple of months, and I've been rather jealous. Yes me and Blindtraveller had a spell in London in December, but it just wasn't for long enough to do much. It's fair to say I've been green eyed with jealousy of Kite159, 55013, rg177, Keith Jarrett, Fishquinn and anyone else I've missed who've had good sessions in London. Hence the trip title, and at some point the musical references will be back without a doubt. I'll be consulting my playlists and YouTube viewing history for ideas before the next one!
Being far too tired when I got home late, after going for a hellfire meal at The Glass Tandoori [local Indian restaurant in Hereford, highly recommended to everyone! - Ed] which in itself is a long story, I get the bag packing done this morning. Managed the dance of de-rance [I might make that a thing - Ed] last night as soon as I got home though as I was beyond rancid thanks to the weather. A very light breakfast and my Costa travel mug filled, it was off to Hereford. 170632 is on the 1006 to Birmingham New Street [I wonder what the odds are of 170633 doing it next Sunday are - Ed] and I find a seat at the back. Time to get hammering away on the tablet to begin this trip report then, which takes until Ledbury. I have a ton of moves from Monday and Friday to add to the moves book, so that's the next objective on this MMM [Mandatory Mundane Move, and yes that's becoming a thing! - Ed] since there's time. All the while playing my custom playlist on Google Play, a nice mix of favourites from Linkin Park, Green Day, Disturbed and Keane. I also make no apologies for 4 Ed comments in this paragraph!
The moves book all done by Droitwich Spa, the rest of the journey is over before I know it and we arrive on time at 1137. I'm first off the train and march off to Moor Street, getting there from the 170 in 6 minutes. I reject a coffee move here, thinking I'd get one on the train and preferring to find a good seat for the booked Cat thrash to London. Dud 68010 is on the 1155 to London Marylebone, and we leave on time with some most welcome noise. Shame it's coffin stock but it'll do! Later on we're informed there's no catering steward due to unfortunate circumstances, which is awkward for me as I'll have to be careful with the 400ml of squash I have left! My Just 15 tickets have come out as Advance Singles, marked £15 each, both portions with no booked services on them and the one back says it's only valid today. Even though the tickets say £15 each way the collection ticket confirms I've only been charged £15. I tried tweeting Chiltern twice yesterday but to no avail, not very professional! The guard on this train is also not sure what's going on, his advice was to query it at Marylebone, but it should be fine. We'll soon find out at least!
Arrival is at 1338 and I march straight to the ticket office. My query creates quite the delay, eventually no-one knows what's going on with it and my ticket home is endorsed for tomorrow anyway. Kite159 arrives eventually but jumped straight onto the 1357 to Aylesbury [our originally planned move - Ed] not realising I wasn't on it. Hassaanhc joins me and I am in desperate need of food so I do Burger King. Unusually for a railway station, Bite cards are not accepted! Eventually my order is processed and we march down the road to Baker Street. After a while, Kite159 arrives, well he does but we didn't join 21328+21327 as they were not required for me. Therefore we get the next train to Great Portland Street, which was my first move since getting to London, 59 minutes after arriving! A Bus Stop Bash is had on double winners
21114+21113 and we finally meet up with Kite. It turns out we all need a fair few shacks on the Metropolitan line, so we join double winners
21092+21091 to my first winner shack of the day at Northwood Hills. It's only 5 minutes until double winners
21110+21109 take us down the road to Pinner. A supply raid is required now, not to mention a PNB! I jump on ahead of the others onto double winners
21027+21028 to Harrow on the Hill, where I meet the guys again for a leap to Preston Road on double duds 21005+21006. The wins come back straight away, with double winners
21059+21060 back to Harrow on the Hill. A change gets us a few minutes wait for double winners
21076+21075 to West Harrow.
Crikey I'm chuffed here at how well things were going! Double winners
21018+21017 for a Bus Stop Bash to Rayners Lane, one that Kite needed. Double duds 21328+21327 take us back to Harrow on the Hill after discovering a Chiltern Turbo was due soon to Marylebone, so we bail for it and it's dud 165038. No matter to me, it's my first Turbo of 2016, and I realise just how much variety I've had already this year, no complaints whatsoever from me! Hassaanhc and me both want a Costs break, so we walk to Baker Street via a Costa. You may notice at this point that I hadn't had a coffee since around 0950, and by the time I start drinking this one it's around 1700. For me that's a long time without caffeine! Off to the Jubilee we go, and it's back to the winners with double winners
96111+96070, much to Hassaan's disgust as he had this pair earlier! Next up is Waterloo and a trip to foreign territory for me [you might guess I'm not SWT's biggest fan - Ed] as we're hunting the triple 456s on Hampton Court services. The next Hampton Court is a 455+456, but we flag it in favour of double winners for everything
458535+458523 on a Bus Stop Bash to Vauxhall.
Here we discover winner
456007 is leading dud 455920, so it's off to Clapham Junction! Just as well as we were hunting down quadruple 377/3s on East Grinstead to Victoria services. We're only 4 minutes before winners
377324+377320 lead dud 377308 with winner
377310 roll in so it was naturally enough all on and off to Victoria! Credit to Kite for the idea, that worked out beautifully! We're not hanging around long, this time taking in the Southeastern side, and we're soon on a very busy winner
465197 to the first winner shack in a while today, Sydenham Hill, Kite missed a winning 465 up this way earlier, due to delays, so when we managed to catch up with double duds 465190+466035 he was very pleased indeed to get his penultimate 465/1 for haulage! I think the 466 was also a win for him [I've had it multiple times on a Kent Rover - Ed] so good move. I can't recall what Hassaan needed to be honest, but over the course of the evening he scored quite a bit. Off to Herne Hill next, and after multiple changes of plan, due to various duds, we end up on double duds 466027+465013 to Kent House.
Here we walk to Beckenham Road tram stop, about a 6 minute hike through roads resembling dirt tracks to begin with, and we join winner
2542 for the Bus Stop Bash to Beckenham Junction. It's certainly gone nippy here, so when dud 465029 [my luck with Southeastern has been shocking tonight! - Ed] rolls in it's nice to warm up. Off to Brixton next, the mainline station here I've never done, and I can see why, what a horrible dump of a place! I can't comment for the others, but I darn well didn't feel safe here. Thankfully it's not long before winner
465174 leads 465157 and we jump on to Herne Hill. After some decision making, helped by duds, it's winner
319421 to Elephant & Castle, oh thst sound has been sorely missed! The interchange from the mainline station to the Bakerloo line is long, twisted and takes so much longer than expected, I think we were all glad to jump on dud 3357 and winner
3244 to Waterloo. By now it's getting on quite a bit, and Kite needs to get home, so we part ways as he joins his 159s home. Meanwhile, Hassaan and I are still going yet, and we end up on double winners
458502+458524, 524 also required for sight. We only take them to Vauxhall however, for good reason...Winner
455912 leads dud 455872 for the trip back to Waterloo. Why the rush to go back, I hear you all ask?
158884 had been noted and suggested it was on the 2045 to Salisbury. Strictly speaking I'd be up a creek without a paddle if I joined it for a Clapham Junction leap, as it's pick up only, but for my last SWT DMU it was worth the risk. Yeah, well, umm, no. Turns out it wasn't on the 2045 after all, with its next working unclear. Right that's that idea out of the window! Dud 455723 leads winner
455849 for a leap to Clapham Junction, where we have a long wait for a 442. "Woah, hold on there Tech," I hear you all bellowing, "since when did you like 442s?!" Well the simple answer is I don't really care about them, but Hassaan wanted a ride on one so we discover we can get to Victoria to pick it up. Dud 377617 leads winner
377603 for the leap and we can't help but wind up Kite about it as he needs 377617 to clear the 377/6s. 442401 is a dud for the trip back to Clapham Junction, where I bail as I'm in dire need of food and a rest now, 11 hours after the bash started!
After parting ways with Hassaan, I find KFC and get a popcorn chicken snackbox for my tea, then it's around the corner to Travelodge. Yes I heard you all fall off your chairs in shock, you all spitting out your beverages, yes I really was staying in a Travelodge again. New readers to these trip reports will not be familiar with my massive dislike of Travelodge following their new beds. I'm not going to start that rant again, don't worry! After a while, my stomach is demanding feeding again, so it's off to Sainsburys Local for some chocolate doughnuts and a large bottle of water for tomorrow's squash. It's time to hit the books and get everything figured out, much later I discover I got 32 winners and 8 shack scores, not bad at all! It still takes ages to get to sleep though, eventually getting there around 0100. That really isn't good with an 0430 alarm...
Stats will be merged with Day 2.
11/01/2016 - Green Eyed Tech, Day 2
0430 and the alarm is silenced quickly, and I'm more awake than I expected to be. A major de-rance is required, which helps somewhat. The travel mug filled with coffee, I was out of the Travelodge within 26 minutes of getting up, most shocking! Off to the station and I turn down dud 444043 for a Wimbledon leap, instead running to the other side for a pair of unknown 455s to Vauxhall. Or at least so I thought, we're RA to Waterloo! Oh crepe, this isn't good! RTT saves me though, I can get the 0530 to Weymouth and bail for a +6 at Wimbledon. Why the fuss? I'll tell you in a minute...Dud 444007 takes me there, and I start playing [in my head! - Ed] the danger music. The connection is easily made, and winner
444030 is on the 0454 Basingstoke to London Waterloo. Fellow PSUL'ers will recognise that one, as it is one of the few trains booked to traverse the District line between Wimbledon and East Putney, using the curve there to join the mainline fia Wandsworth Town. Me and several others used to go for it everytime we did a London all-nighter, but it never produced. I saw earlier it had actually produced according to RTT last night on the 0042 Waterloo to Strawberry Hill, much to my surprise, so I was in high hopes today. This is apparently one of the more reliable workings, hence the early start and booking base camp with easy access to it. I can't remember the last time I scored a 444, far too long ago to remember clearly! Off we go 1 minute down and I'm amazed how busy this train is. Of course, until Southfields I have eyes only for the view out of the window, to ensure we're going the booked way. Thankfully we are, and it's a really slow run but we get the curve done, with beaming smiles from this weary basher!
Off at Clapham where the rain's really coming down, but I eventually join dud 455730 leading winner
455902 for a Bus Stop Bash to today's first shack scratch, Wandsworth Town. I considered just doing more SWT shacks today, but decide to investigate the next Waterloo, just in case. Just as well, as it's winner
458533! Back to Clapham then, and I can comfortably join winner
378148 on the 0629 to Dalston Junction. I can only put it down to being outrageously tired, but I had it in my head we were headed for Willesden. An announcement makes me realise that, no, that's not the case as we go via Clapham High Street! OK, no I'm not going Jubilee line shack scratching then, muppet! I bail at Peckham Rye after formulating a plan, and a +2 is easily made on the island platform for dud 377120 to North Dulwich. Dud 455830 leads winner
455811 for the Bus Stop Bash back to East Dulwich, where I have a choice. Carry on to London Bridge, or head towards Wimbledon? I choose the former, as I want to clear out some SET shacks today. Dud 455824 takes me there, and I eventually get past the crowds to join double winners
376029+376023 to Greenwich. Westcombe Park is my next goal, but I'm eyeing up the DLR and fancy a spin on that. Maybe later...Double duds [really? When I need tons of 465s?! - Ed] 465024+465152 take me on a very smelly ride to Westcombe Park where a short wait is made a reasonably long one thanks to a 6 minute delay. Double duds [don't ask what expletives were coming to mind... - Ed] 465157+465174, the former being done yesterday, take me to Maze Hill next.
I finally source a coffee from the outlet on the London bound platform, then join dud 376034 leading winner
376031 to Deptford. That's that lot on this side of SET finally done, then I just can't turn down the DLR any further, I rush over to join dud 376009 and winner
376020 to Greenwich. I finish my coffee before heading over, getting a little lost finding platform 4 somehow. No matter, it resulted in me double winners
15+64 to Deptford Bridge. You may remember that all DLR shacks are dud for me, but a linear bash to Lewisham was deemed necessary as the frequencies were great this morning. If I'm paying top dollar for pre-0930 bashing I might as well make the most of it. Not long to wait before I join winners
91+54 leading dud 09 to Elverson Road. Duds 68+53 lead winner
85 for the leap to Lewisham. Jeez these trains are rammed down here, getting to the Oyster reader was a battle! I flag winner 106 in favour of getting onto SET metals again, taking advantage of a PNB opportunity first. The Hayes branch was my next target, and double winners
376002+376013 take me to the next shack score at West Wickham.
4 minutes later I'm back on the move with winner
465178 leading dud 465183 [first had on Tech's Gardening in February 2015 - Ed] for a shack score at Eden Park. A nice unexpected bonus was finding a Tiby Carvery over the road, which I simply have to visit as I have yet to eat today. Breakfast at Toby Carvery is hellfire, and for £3.99 not including drinks you cannot do better than this all you can eat breakfast. I left beyond stuffed, and it's dud 376026 leading winner
376008 to Clock House. That's the Hayes line done at long last, and taking me forward to Catford Bridge are fresh double duds 376029+376023. I realise after alighting I could have carried on to Lewisham, and I'm moaning out loud to myself "Duuuhhhhh, you could have carried on to Lewisham for the DLR, DUHHHHHHHH! Stupid child!" [and yes that is an exact quote! - Ed] but never mind, it's time to walk to Catford.
Yep, it's 319 and more shack scoring time! The 1003 to Sevenoaks is rather late, but I'm very glad of that as I score double winners
319452+319220 to Beckenham Hill. I can't remember the last time I got a pair of winner 319s, and I suspect it'll never happen again too! Due to the delay it's not too long to wait for the next pair, which were double duds 319425+319007, to score Ravensbourne. There's a +25 now, so I get a small coffee from the outlet by the ticket office [I knew it was a good idea to not spend my loose change yesterday! - Ed] while I wait. By now I'm strongly considering heading home early, I'm so tired. Eventually the coffee and breakfast kick in and I revise that thought, and I get some tunes on for a bit, the first of them since my Pumped Up Playlist around 0505. I was certainly in for a nice surprise now mind, dud 387124 was leading winner
387115 on a stopper to Bedford! Crofton Park is scored after a PNB on the 387s, and I have either a +15 or a +30, so I decide to see what goes towards Catford first. That was a dud 319 so I go back to the other side. While I wait, I decide to see when 319454 will be back, and I think I have it sussed. Off at Peckham Rye then from 319220 and 319452, sitting in the declassfied First Class of 319452 of course. I have a surprise option next, winner
466042 leads dud 465197 so I bail at Nunhead where I can still pick up my 319. First 466 score in a good while, 11 months I believe! I obviously got it wrong on RTT though, as the 319s were a pair of duds. Grr, bad move! After a walkabout, I decide to jump on double duds [seriously?! - Ed] 465018+465037 to Victoria.
Denmark Hill and I consider bailing, and as we leave I wish I had as 319454 was out! Much grr, but at least I know its next working now. However, a chance observation got me to platform 9 at Victoria, as winners
377311+377317 were leading dud 377419, two 377/3 scores cannot be turned down! I take these to West Norwood for a shack score, where I have hardly any time before jumping on double winners
455809+455846 back to Balham. I noticed it earlier, and by gum I had a major hankering for it by now. What on Earth am I on about, you ask with raised eyebrows. Puccinos have an outlet at Balham and I love the coffee from them so it was nothing short of mandatory by now! £2.55 well spent in my eyes. I have an annoying bit of luck now though, dud 377612 takes me to another shack scratch at Norbury. RTT had confirmed I had another train almost right behind me, and I'm not here long before I join dud 377608 to Thornton Heath. I just miss a Victoria train, and the next one eventually shows up with dud 377149 to take me to Streatham Common.
This calls for a celebration, as I've now cleared all shacks on the Brighton Main Line, finally! Dud 455834 takes me to Balham, with me in the motor coach of course. It's time to hit the Northern line now, as I have shacks down this way that I need, plus I only have an hour until my train homeward out of Marylebone, so I need to head back into town. Double winners
51535+51536 take me to winner shack Tooting Broadway, with surprisingly double duds 51664+51663 taking me back up to Tooting Bec. Double winners for everything
51583+51582 take me to Clapham South. Another pair of winners for everything
51671+51670 take me to Clapham Common for yet another pair of winners for everything
51713+51581 to Stockwell. I bail here with the logic being that the Victoria line will be the quickest way into town, just as well as it's now 1435 and I'm on the 1510 off The Bone!
Double duds 11034+11033 take me to Oxford Circus in 9 minutes, where I change for double duds [ouch on both cases - Ed] 3564+3262 to Marylebone where I surface at 1458. Good grief that was close! It's not long before the call to Boarding Area A for the 1510 to Birmingham Snow Hill, which today produces 168001. I dife on fast to get a table, plug everything in and text people. Right time away, and after a brief spot of Jubilee line sets as we fly by, it's time to get the tablet on and type away as fast as I could. At one point the keyboard stops responding properly [well, it did it at Solihull too actually - Ed] which had me majorly worried! Thankfully a restart of it sorted whatever issue it was, and we reach Moor Street 4 down at 1657 with my having got from High Wycombe on Day 1 to Wimbledon at silly o' clock on Day 2 in the trip report, not bad for a little over an hour's work there. A supply raid followed an observing of the 1715 to Scotland as it arrived, thankfully it was dud 390121. Tesco Metro's queues were huge today, but fair games I was through in just 5 minutes. Costa time next, although I had to stop myself going to see what was on the 1730 to Euston. RTT confirms a move on it is doable to International to come back, do the 1819 to Worcester and an HST forward to Hereford. If it wasn't for the risky connection onto the bus home, I'd use that move more often.
The Virgin guy on the barrier tried telling me my Off Peak Return isn't valid until after 1800, umm no that's not true. He lets me through anyway, but I will be checking that out next time. Off Peak Day Returns, yes that's probably not valid, but I think journey planners give those as valid too. Hmm, something to look into! Costa coffee sourced, which goes down beautifully, and I go for a TTF [Tech's Thriller Filler - Ed] with Starships 241 and 206, bumping 241 one step closer to Super Dud status. It's Nightcore time during the wait, and 170504+170517 are on the 1749 Birmingham New Street to Hereford. I'm of course standing to Bromsgrove, and it's time to fire away more on the trip report. By Hereford I'm almost back up to date, and after arriving at 1921 I eventually choose to go to Spoons for tea. Breakfast was 10 hours ago by now, it shows how good that breakfast was if I've only just got to needing food! It's also a good move to keep warm, tick off a new beer [Milestone's Fletcher's Ale - Ed] which puts me on 162 logged brews and only 38 to go until my target of 200 by the end of 2016. The free WiFi, if it works, will also come in handy for posting this!
Nothing else really to discuss, apart from my getting a BBQ chicken, bacon and cheese panini and chips for tea in Spoons, then it'll be the bus home. So let's do the stats, remember these are for both days:
Winners: 65
Shack scores: 27
New sights: 40
New track: That PSUL curve at East Putney, plus some probable micro-gricing in places
Mileage: Unknown yet, I haven't added any moves for 2016 to RM yet!
Rail fares: £59.70 (TfL fares for both days assumed to be £25, exact figures will be known later in the week)
Hotel ching: £39
Bus fares: £4.10
General expenditure: £37.01
Total: £139.81
Not bad for a two day trip! I had allowed up to £30 on top of my usual weekly general expenditure budget, I need to get into the habit of budgeting like that this year. Now to tidy up my spending log...
Hope you all enjoyed the read, I'm expecting another trip to happen on 18th January but we'll see how low my finances have fallen after this trip. I have to remember that I have got New York stuff to buy yet too...
93 winner so far this year, so 2,307 to go. My notes are clearly inaccurate on my memo files then! This means I need to re-count stuff, something to do on my way home then...
