Thanks for all the positive comments, and constructive criticisms- as a new venture we are all learning on the way, sometimes the hard way- such as the diversion, due to the Chorley line closure.

Anyway, as Alex noted, the T&Cs are now available on-line, and I apologize if this caused any inconvenience!

If anyone would like any more information, please email: info@retrorailtours.co.uk, or PM me.

Apparently your Steaming ahead

Yes, it's the typical media type pun all the local ones do it. Although usually my local paper ends up with "Local line hits the buffers due to Network Rail closures..."

But you never hear 'Clagging ahead in Notch 7" do you?

(The following article was published in the July edition of Railtalk magazine)

I'm sure many people dream of making their own railtour company. It's not an easy task but James Palmer has done just that!

I asked James where he got the idea to run a Railtour company, "I’ve been a steward for a well known Railtour company for 3 years and I gained experience from that and I wanted a challenge and I am going to do a degree in transport management, so I decided to start my own company.

I questioned how he would reply to calls that are already too many tours being run at the moment, "I think it’s a very competitive market, however for the average punter wanting to make day trips from the North West, I feel that there aren’t that many operators catering for normal excursions." Don’t worry though - although James’ priority is the ‘day trip’ market - he is also aiming to entice enthusiasts by using ‘classic’ traction. Ultimately, he wants both day trippers and enthusiasts to book on his tours so he must appeal to both, which is not always easy. Relying on the choosy enthusiast market alone would be a risky business, and James already feels that this area is well covered by existing operators

So, for James' first railtour, he picked a popular locomotive and an attractive city to visit. The original plan saw the train heading North along the Settle-Carlisle line, but paths proved too difficult to obtain and the break in Edinburgh would have also had to be compromised. In any case, enthusiasts wishing to experience this scenic route have plenty of tours to choose from this Summer! Besides, as James points out, "the WCML gives us the added benefit of high speed running with a Deltic, plus a Napier assault of Shap AND Beattock!" Heading back via the ECML is bound to prove a hit with Deltic fans, and the trans-Pennine journey is likely to recall memories of the final years of Deltics, displaced onto this route. It’s sure to be a winner!

It all sounds so easy... but actually organising it all was a difficult task. Nevertheless, things seemed to be running smoothly when rumours of engineering work to the Chorley arches surfaced. At first this was dismissed by the operator, on the basis that Network Rail had not informed them of any closure. But a friend introduced James to a NR train planner at a diesel gala, who gave him the bad news: the rumours were true and he could not go via Chorley! Furthermore, the Bolton stop would probably have to be omitted as the route via Westhoughton had no spare paths with TPE already diverted that way.

It was all a bit disappointing; as with only 11 weeks until the tour, NR should not be announcing blockades (they are committed to a T-12 timetable). But after a few frantic calls, the tour was re-routed via the Chat Moss line, and rare curve joining the WCML at Golborne Jn- then calling additionally at Wigan North Western and Leyland. Bolton, Horwich & Chorley were removed due to the closure. Several passengers - mostly from Bolton - were informed of the decision, and all agreed to board at alternative stations. "They were very understanding," said a relieved James, "there should be more communication within the industry. Thankfully, problems were 'nipped in the bud' before anything major arose".

The Retro Deltic Scot is scheduled to run to Edinburgh on Saturday 30 August 2008.

For starters you're on the wrong side of the Pennines!

Now where did I leave my hat and coat...

Order, order!!!

The nice people at Retro Railtours are non-county biased, and love all their passengers, regardless of where they are from :D. I for one am a 'Lancashire lad', however I was schooled in Yorkshire, so like both counties very much :D. The war of the roses was a long time ago after all, OK, we did win, but I'm sure the Yorkshire-folk should be able to live it down at some point ;).

Apparently your Steaming ahead

Although you could be fooled with the traction for your first tour ;)

Exactly, especially considering 55022s boiler space is now room to an extended range fuel-tank!! The papers do over use chichés, and also serious cut down stories. The original press release given by the WY Forget-me-Not trust was over double the size of the published piece!

As a Huddersfieldonian, Ben, did you actually see the printed story in the Examiner- was the phot as small as the one on the web??!! I haven't seen a copy of it!

I can't seem to get through to the number on the website I've been trying for the last week and it's a bit late to be posting out money. The advance tickets I had planned to buy to/from the tour once I was able to confirm pay-on-the-day would be accepted have gone now.

AFAIK pay-on-the-day is available, I would drop a line by e-mail or keep trying the number tomorrow to inform RR of your intentions...if you still plan to do the tour.

Loadings are now very good but, realistically, it is not quite going to sell out, so paying on the day is fine.

Blimey - I never actually thought it would run, no offence to anyone, I could just see a major farce on the day.

same here!

Passed Lockerbie 11:00 (lots of confused looking normals waiting for 1S39 got a nice surprise!)

The assault on Beattock is imminent; if we get to the top without being overtaken I reckon we'll make it to EDB without being looped.

sadly we are being looped

<p>yep, 57601. we departed EDB a little late (16:25?) but unsurprisingly passed Drem early at 16:39 however we are having to slow down a few times so I suspect we may be behind a freight.

edit: been in a Granthouse loop for about 40 mins. departed on time.

11 pax stuck in a lift at EDB, hopefully they got on the 17:00 and can get on at NCL.
