Leave Euston, reverse at Wembley, North London Line to the junction with the ECML.

I've no doubt this is a very silly question, but why can't the sleeper simply depart from Kings Cross?

Lack of free platforms. All the infrastructure food and supplies are at Euston. The passengers would need transferring from Euston to Kings Cross. The train still comes ECS from Wembley so would need to run from Wembley via NLL and reverse to access Kings Cross

Think the new schedules had been input quite late on for these diversions this week, in fact the last two nights the two southbound services have been altered after departure as they had the incorrect reversing point at Wembley (should be WEFOC, not Wembley Inter City Depot before anybody gets hopeful of scoring some new track!)

length is the killer- you need about a 400m long platform , the longest platforms at Kings Cross are about 100m too short! The lead loco would genuinely be just short of the tunnels. To operate from Kings Cross, as well as everything noted by Adam0894, you'd really have to board as half-trains, depart and then shunt together up at Ferme Park. A right palaver. Hardly worth it when they get leave Euston as normal, run around at Wembley (or use the loco that led the train into Euston?) and then proceed from there, delighting any bashers on board with the jaunt up through Primrose Hill and down the North London Incline

Last night only 1S26 ran and it went via Hampstead Heath & Kentish Town West.

Because it needs to go that far to access the City lines to get on the North London Line, there is no facing connection out of Euston. It is possible to reverse in Kilburn Loop and go via Primrose Hill if the slow lines are open but it isn't an ideal place to be messing around attaching and detaching locos.

Usually detach and attach locos at Wembley but either route via City Lines or Primrose Hill would be viable from there to reach the ECML.
