It appears to me that both EMT and SWT (certainly with their diesels) underdiagram compared with other TOCs, and that is why Salisbury always do so well in the golden spanners.

Who? I did, because the trains that are relatively short, can be worked in multiple and (from my limited experience) are generally overcrowded are the XC voyagers. Replace them with some fixed formation 6- 7- or 8-coach L/H sets on their long distance routes and you can release more flexible stuff for lines where joining or splitting en route might help get around some of the current constraints.

Your comment reminded me of similar stock being used by other TOCs, so I thought it led on naturally to what use was made of it, particularly as (if the fleets haven't diverged too much) fitting the tilting mechanism to make them fully WCML compatible might be the quickest way of procuring tilting stock.

Yes EMT can have pairs of Meridians on certain trains.

Since you cannot split a Pendolino ( ) are you suggesting using Voyagers or some new-build Short Pendolinos?

In any event these trains are often pretty full between Manchester and Crewe (even when 11car).

try reading posts 88 and 93 (or one of several cycles of the same discussion earlier in the thread.) Either could work, the voyagers might be the quicker option. If we were really committed to increasing capacity or making the best use of what we have maybe do both in succession, subsequently cascading the voyagers to relieve another similar capacity problem.
