Rail day out from Freiburg

Okay, so it looks like I'm going to have a spare day in Freiburg im Breisgau sometime in April, and want to fill it with a Baden Württemberg Ticket.

I'll probably have already done the line to Titisee and Donaueschingen earlier in the week, so does anyone have any advice for particularly interesting rail trips around there?

Not sure about the rail network surrounding but Freiburg is a lovely city to spend a day in, don't forgot the gummy bear shop for a visit!

Stauffen is an excellent and easy half day excursion - or Breisach (on the Rhine)

It was donkey's years ago but I once did a circular trip from Freiburg via Donaueschingen to Konstanz, returning along the Rhine valley via Basel Bad Bf.
You could probably reach the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen (just in Switzerland), or go up the Feldberg in the Black Forest (hiking trails and skilifts) from Titisee.
You can also reach Mulhouse in Alsace and circle via Strasbourg back to Freiburg (but probably not on one ticket).

Take a trip to Breisach and back via Sasbach (I think the latter is possible). Just for fun you can walk the couple of kilometres over the Rhein into France. Its quite an impressive river.

There are some vineyards in Breisach too.

If you go to Titisee there's a wooden hand craft shop at the station (or just outside) if that's your thing - lots of stuff to keep the wife/girlfriend happy.

Take the train a few stops north on the mainline and marvel at the sheer amount of freight - a few years ago it was a almost ever 2-3 minutes!

Take a trip to Switzerland (Basel) or over to Mulhouse - I think there's a vey good rail museum there.

The Schauinslandbahn cable car is Germany's longest and a short trip outside the city.

And finally don't fall into any of the drainage channels in the streets of Freiburg - local custom has it that if you had you *have* to marry a local girl ....

If you want a long rail trip the main line between Offenburg and Donaueschingen is good, with some spectacular scenery and engineering. The Breisach area is good for a shorter ride.

If you are staying in tourist accommodation in the Black Forest, your tourist tax gets you a Konus-Karte which gives free non-IC rail and bus travel over a large area though not all Baden-W.

I don't think Freiburg hotels do Konus, though most places around do.

I'd support Breisach, doing the circle via Endingen where the depot is.

And you can do a big circle via Basel Schaffhausen (visit Rheinfall) Singen and the Schwarzwaldbahn.

And IIRC the BaWuTicket covers local buses, so you could do some short cuts for scenery and variety...

Another recommendation for the Cable Car. It is an amazing journey. It is a quick tram then bus ride.

I don't think Freiburg hotels do Konus, though most places around do.

The one I stayed in last September did (Hotel Minerva, quiet side-street but handy for station) and still mentions it on its website, but there is no mention of Freiburg in the Konus publicity.

We last stayed in Freiburg a couple of years ago; I can't remember the exact details, but we bought some sort of tourist ticket from the helpful Tourist Information Office there. As well as tram travel, it included one return trip on the Schauinsland cable car.

We took tram route 2 to the village terminus of Guenterstal; connecting bus 21 from the bus stop next to the tram (no need to cross the road); and finally the cable car to the top. All on the same ticket.

In Freiburg itself, we found the Martin's Brau brewpub near the Martinstor gate was very good for both food & beer: watching the cooks prepare the Bratkartoffeln (fantastic roast sliced potatoes) in huge heavy frying pans was entertaining; and both the wheat- and dark-beer were good, although you might perhaps want to pass on their Banana beer!

The line between Konstanz, Donaueschingen and Offenburg is often set up to be something spectacular. In reality, it just runs through forested hills and there are a couple of loops in the Triberg area (highest part of the lane).

Yes there is. The Frensh Railway Museum Cité du Train is worth a visit. Additionally, Mulhouse has several tram and a tram-train line.
Next to the train museum the is the EDF Electropolis Museum dealing with all things electrical.
