The loco has apparently got more pulling power after its mods than a 90... maybe too much for it to handle??

So this happened at 1118....Why is the WCML STILL a mess. Just viewed a 4-car 350 on an 8-car 321 diagram with Indian style overcrowding and there are still capages and late running aplenty. The lines have been open since about 1400, how exactly have they not managed to get themselves in order for the evening peak?

Safety reasons, and the power was cut.

Still a shambles. Train was on up slow, even with power isolated shouldn't have been too difficult to get the fast lines open reasonably quickly, but I suppose dragging trains through an isolated problem is too difficult despite the 57s being designed for such events

How many 57s are in the area? Not many. By the time a suitable number were brought down, the line would of probably re-opened.

The problem with 86501 is it has the power of a class 90 through re-gearing but the problem is that an 86 was generally designed to a specific standard and changing the amount it can haul can (as it always will) lead to overheating.
And when you havent got a set of blowers like those in a class 87 then it can lead to overheating and inevitably electrical fires.

I'm lead to believe it a blower system like an 87. Not sure though.

Yes I heard similar but alot of sources say it was just re-geared with only slight Mods to it.

Though as it is re-geared its topping out less mph (75mph max) I don't see why that would be a reason to overheat.

Not an identical case but similar in some respects, that 59s and 66s have similar engines (not the same of course), its just 59s are re-geared differently to produce the high Traction Effort they have compared to a 66.

Agree, all that extra torque going through the loco's transmission etc would need some serious mods I would think, maybe how much was underestimated... but I'm guessing, I know nothing!

just seen some pics of 86501's insides and she looks a bit toasted to me, lots of bits burnt out and melted. Does not look to good.

A thunderbird was sent out to haul the pendolino stuck in the section but the power was resumed before it arrived.

Virgin Trains stopped all their Northampton shuttle trains at Euston (the blockbuster's continuing). London Midland ran a shuttle to Tring.

Standard operating proceedure that when the emergency services require access to the infrastructure, everything is blocked and isolated, no arguements. If they emergency services are on the track, they obviously have a difficult job to do and don't need it made more difficult by worrying about open roads and live rails/overhead wires.
