Our annual Diesel Weekend will be taking place between the 23rd and 25th August 2008. The VoG council have also kindly permitted us to operate over the new extension to Gladstone Bridge for the weekend.

In operation will be 08511, D9521, D8137, 47768 and 73118. All locos will feature on Sat and Sun, Monday will see D8137, D9521 and the 117 DMU operate. If all goes to plan, this will be 73118's preservation debut using the GatEx rake in push pull mode. It is due to run a shuttle-service between Woodham Halt and Gladstone Bridge.

First train on Sat & Sun is 0955hrs, Monday is 1100hrs. All subject to availability etc.

The timetable will be uploaded to the website soon. www.valeofglamorganrailway.co.uk

Any stations recomended more than other for pubs/eateries as after 08511 arrives at the depot at 1424 (I presume you can travel to the depot on it?) then I won't be doing anything until the 73 comes out at 1539 as i ain't doing the 47 which seems to be attached to the 20.

Apologies, it's a typo (I really should have picked it up) and it should read a 1418hrs arrival time at Woodham Halt. The 5W17 move onto shed is not passed for passenger movements and therefore runs as ECS.

The depot is not open to the public I'm afraid.

As for food, I would suggest taking the 1430 departure (1G19) off Woodham Halt up to Gladstone Bridge where you will find a Morrisons right next to the station. Just beyond Morrisons is a KFC. Otherwise, there are plenty of pubs, bars and cafes on Barry Island. If you chose the Morrisons move, it would give you just over an hour before catching the 1533hrs (1W24) departure back to Woodham Halt to waiting on the 1545hrs (1D26).

Hope this helps? (From memory, I'm working the 73 diagram in the afternoon.)

Hope to be there, unless the gen for Saturday on AXC is hot, then I'll be there instead.

If I don't make it, which won't be good as I need the 08, 73 and 47 as well as the new extension, then I hope the weather improves and that it is a good day.

Okay cheers for that, been told 37901 is now out at the East lancs this weekend due to a shortage of kettles so may do that but if i do will definatly get to Barry at some point else (any other plans for the ED to be out this year?).

Nothing planned at the moment for the ED. It's not our loco obviously, so we rely on the goodwill of its custodian to allow it out. I know it's due to have some work done, a repaint and possibly have the scharfenberger coupler removed so a fair bit of work in the near future inside its workshop.

Sorry you might not be able to come along. The weather looks not-too-bad!

Funny you mention the slug. I used to work in the Docks Board Building just down the line from Gladstone Bridge some 12 years or so back and remember them fondly for making so much racket on coal trains I had to stop work or put the phone down etc. Great! The 66's just don't do it I'm afraid.

Just a brief posting to thank all those who turned up for our Diesel Weekend. Hope you enjoyed it and saw/rode/photted what you wanted. We are considering running this event again and would welcome any feedback, either via PM or on the forum.

Thanks,

Nick.

Had some top gen (Ta Jim!) on Holidaymaker HSTs so couldn't do the Barry event after all. If it happens again, I'll hopefully be free!

Sorry you couldn't come but it was a good event. Visitor numbers were a bit lower than we had hoped for, but at least there was plenty of room! The sun even shone for parts of the weekend which was a bit of a bonus.

Agreed, nice to see the sun out for a bit on Saturday.

Next year I'll be vastly more free to attend galas since there will be no Valentas on Holidaymaker HSTs. For obvious reasons, this summer is being dedicated as much as possible to chasing them down on XC for the last time.

I know I asked over on WNXX, but if I were to pass by Barry would I have much chance of seeing 08511? Only reason I want to see it now before I get any chance of bashing it is to catch up a little with heart-of-wessex with the 08s.

It is at Barry until a commercial hire contract comes through and then it will depart. Normally, its lives inside its own shed which means it isn't visible, but if you were looking to pay a visit, I'm sure we could work something out for you.
