Virgin trains at lime st today 28/12

Can anyone tell me why the services from lime st to Euston today are at different times than normal? There doesn't seem to be any mention of any timetable changes. I thought today was a normal Monday service?

Im guessing additional time allowed in timetable for slow running past an engineering blockade somewhere. Starting liverpool early so the sets make right time in Euston thereby not affecting the allocated back working.......

Well, the TOC will be able to tell you. Might not the fact that it's a Bank Holiday be having an impact?

Trains are also diverted via Stoke to avoid ongoing engineering works at Norton Bridge.

Liverpool Lime Street and Glasgow Central (direct route)
All services will be diverted via Stoke-on-Trent and Alsager, calling at Crewe.
This is because of the route improvement project taking place between Stafford and Crewe.

In the good old days of one railway (yes whisper it, British Rail), there would be a supplement to the GBTT produced which would detail all the alterations with revised timetables in tabular format if the changes were significant enough.

That's because you asked why the trains were at different times and said that there was no mention of a timetable change. We pointed out that there was a reason, and that it had been advertised. We've actually answered your initial questions. If you were looking to see the exact departure times, you could have asked us for it.

There's no specific timetable as far as I can see either, but that's probably because most people nowadays use online searches to find their trains rather than downloading or even finding a hard copy of a timetable. VT in particular have a large number of people who will be traveling on either advance tickets or with reservations. People traveling can use realtimetrains, or the Virgin Trains journey planner, or any other journey planner to find out train times. As most people would do anyway. There's also the VT pocket timetable generator. I agree that the apparent lack of a physical timetable on the VT website is not ideal, but given the nature of VTs services, I expect that most people wouldn't be adversely affected.

VT have been doing this for years.

They just produce a leaflet containing ambiguous phrases such as:

"Services between England Scotland will operate only to/from Preston"

Good old British Rail didn't have on-line capability.

If BR was still around today I suspect they'd be relying on on-line journey planners with the GBTT having little or no role.

Did any member of the public ever read the supplement - hundreds of pages long, line after line of alterations with a few tables shown completely. Also in the good old days of one railway it took many decades to actually produce an all system timetable. It was like travelling to a foreign country going out of your own region and trying to find what the local train times were.

In my youth, I not only read the supplement but I also tried to amend the times in my timetable book, which I think I remember buying for the princely sum of 1/-

Most people have access to smart phones now so they can see the departure times on their phones, and also it gives the time in advance tickets, the times are different as the trains were going through Stoke On Trent due to the engineering works between Crewe and Stafford

Whilst I agree that online journey checkers and just knowing departure times are sufficient for the needs of the "normal" passenger, I do rather miss not being able to sit down and study the full timetable.

So do I - although I was surprised the first time the timetable came out on searchable computer disk (in late 1980s ?) that routes I thought were the fastest were not always the case. Lot to be said for journey planners and I wonder if they are one reason why rail growth has been as high it has
