Trying to Locate a Signal Box ?

I am trying to locate a Signal Box where a position has been advertised.

In the ad it says Plumbley SB, Lostock Gralam. I'm not sure if there's a spelling mistake on the Ad ? and it should be Plumley ? Plumley West comes up on a search but doesn't appear to be near to Lostock Gralam.

Any assistance is most appreciated.

right , when I looked on maps it was coming up as near Mobberley but that's going in wrong direction from Plumley & the other side of Knutsford.

Do you know anything about the box ? Pics show it to be of the old type and as it's a Grade 2 position I'm guessing that the line isnt THAT busy. Also seen that it's earmarked for closure in 2019 ?

Greenbank a bit further down was planned to go in the next few years but no idea if that has slipped. I expect Plumley isn't far behind it.

Did seem to be quite quiet considering the amount of time she was on the internal Forum!

The line has been getting busier over the last 12/18 months and this should continue into the future as there is more freight (biomass) due to use this line more frequently from mid 2016. You probably need a car or motorbike / bicycle to get to the box as it is at the end of a very long private road / public footpath.

She moved to a bigger Box.

Some people are quite content staying in Gr 2 boxes!!

with it saying that it will close to be controlled from manc I'm wondering how much scope there actually is for progressing up the grades, last thing I want is to end up out of work again as it's been harder this time than it's ever been to find work.

nice one, I finally found it on the map and how I think you'd get to it by car.

I went to photo Plumley box a fortnight ago. Turn south off the main road through Lostock Gralam village, pass the railway station on the right. There is a tarmac private road on the left, single track with passing places. Go about a mile along this keeping the railway immediately to your left. The box has lost its nameboards unfortunately.

This CLC box used to control extensive freight yards for the Holford Hall works of the Ammonia Soda Company (later absorbed by Brunner Mond), and dates from 1908.

All that's left of that is an emergency crossover and a siding.

Plumbley is the old spelling for Plumley, and the station name was only changed in 1945.

ah right, so I take it there isn't much to do then particularly at night. Looking at that timetable/schedule that was posted everything seems to just be going straight past, when that the case what exactly does the job entail ?

Trains still have to be signalled, and therefore the signals operated, even if the trains go straight past!

The first railway 'signalmen' were actually railway policemen who stood at the side of the track to control trains by displaying different colour flags at certain times after a train had passed them - the "Time Interval" system. They also had duties of keeping the public off the new-fangled railway etc.. The policemen were the newly-invented 'Peelers' or 'Bobbys' after Robert Peel who introduced them to the UK. It was the latter nickname which stuck most on the railways.

well I didnt get to the next stage with the Plumbley job althgough Network Rail informed me that I did pass the tests ... just not on the right side of the cut off for the next stage.

They said I should apply for any others that I see because I could well be in the numbers they take to next stage for them, so then I see a position at Kirkham and after searching for Kirkham SB throw in the application, then today after logging in the position has Kirkham Abbey for the area, so I had to withdraw the application as I was thinking it was Kirkham Lancs & not Kirkham North Yorks, a bit more specific on the job ad would've helped tbh, especially when its a place name of which there are more than 1.

Does anyone else have trouble with the Network Rail site ? I often get page errors and cant access it.
