56097 unveiled in new livery

One of only a few 'grids' in preservation, 56097 is based at the Great Central Railway (Nottingham) has been repainted and looks absolutely fantastic!

The repaint of 56097 into railfreight triple grey is now in its final stages.
Top coat is being applied this week, and the locomotive will then receive a coat of varnish prior to the application of coal sector decals, cast double arrows and Toton depot plaques.

All of the air filter hatches have now been refitted, adjusted and fixed in place with stainless steel fixings. Various roof panels have been refitted and re-sealed.

Both cab floors are in the process of renewal. New sections of 18mm marine ply have been fitted where the floor had deteriorated, and a new non-slip rubber surface will be fixed on top.

Test runs are planned for late August or September, and if all goes well it is hoped that the locomotive will make its debut at the GCRN diesel gala on October 11th and 12th 2008

It has now been fully painted in to BR Trainload freight coal sector livery, and has recieved its new numbers and data panel, and depot code 'TO' Toton. It is now awaiting its cast BR double arrows, some paint on the roof, its ceiling panels and cab windows / headlights.

[Pedantic] 56s were built in 1977, so emerged in BR blue FAR too many locos in Blue or Green anyway! Well done to the group for painting the loco into a fantastic 90s livery!

Yes but the owner wanted to Paint it BR Green. I would of looked good, but I didn't think it should be on the 56. He could of done a Mainline 56 :P

Painting a Class 56 in BR Green, is almost as daft as painting a Class 40 into BR Large Logo Blue, oh that's right someone did that too!
Ironically, the 40 looks good in BR Large Logo Blue (what loco doesn't?!), but BR Green is awful
At least in Triple Grey Coal it won't look out of place

From memory, there is room within the engine bay to modify and add an ETH alternator

InterCity West Coast looked at converting seven Class 56s for use on sleepers, but the costs were too high, which resulted in pairs of Class 37s and three generator vans
Ironically, one of the generator vans blew up in the first month and was never see again, the second one suffered erratic problems in the second year, followed by the third one just a few weeks later!

56019, did a spin from B'ham to Bomo IIRC. But back in the day, 10 years ago, 56s were used a lot on Virgin in lieu of Virgin's 47s, along with 31s, 33s, 37s, RES/Fragonset/Freightliner 47s/58s!

And 73s, IIRC a pair of EDs made it to Birmingham New Street from Reading back in the 1990s without failing/overheating.

56019 went to a popular seaside resort courtesy of Virgin. Unfortunately, yours truly wasn't able to attend...

56s helped Virgin out in the times when thier fleet of 47s was, well, in shambles. I remember seeing a 56 towing a dead 47 at Brum once, bet the pax were happy at scratching something new :grin::grin:

I doubt 47292 will be repainted until low season after next gala. 47765 will be going in to Intercity hopefully.
