I'm up in Knottingley sometime over the Christmas period seeing family, and I want to do the Dearne Valley line, so where's the best place to start?

I'll save the Goole train until summer, so I can actually see out of the train!

It is only Moorthorpe-Church Fenton that has a very infrequent service and if you just want to cover this stretch you could go to Pontefract (frequent bus or train from Knottingley) then start with the 10.10 Pontefract Baghill-Church Fenton, then 11.20 Church Fenton-Moorthorpe, then 2 hour wait (lunch) until the 14.02 back to Pontefract.

If you want to range further there are lots of options and you need to look at the Sheffield-Leeds and Leeds-York timetables as well.
