I was just sitting wondering, with the years being 3 weeks away from ending, what everyone has in the pipelines for next year and have you achieved what you wanted to this year?

For me personally this year has probably been the most full tilt year I've had on the railway front, since the mid 80's to early 90's. I've really really got back into it, over the last 18 months and I have to say, I've thoroughly enjoyed it too and I also have to say, this section of the forum, has played a major part in most of it. Reading you good folks postings, has definitely inspired me to get out and about. The advice and bits of wisdom procured from all on here, has been amazing, so thanks to absolutely everyone for that.

As for this year, at the end of last year, I was hoping to get stuck into the Midlands and the North West (well, Birmingham, Stafford, Mancheter and Liverpool) were 2 areas, that needed doing big time. I'm thrilled I got them done, the HoE and North West Rovers, were an absolute joy, cops Galore, riding the Chiltern 68's were a total joy, as were the Cumbrian Coast 37's, I needed to sample them again, it had been far too long since I'd had the joy of a syphon noise at the front of a passenger train, fortunately the Cumbrian Coast Loco Hauled allowed me scratch another itch that I've sadly missed, it took a while to get over and scratch that itch but I finally got it scratched. Certainly 37409's thrashing, over the Cumbrian Coast was one of this years highlights, if only them bars in the coaches weren't there. As was the Jock Rail Cats, head out the front window, just made riding the Cats, even more enjoyable.

However I wanted to hit the South West, Wales and Anglia, unfortunately I never got them done, you cant always get, what you want but for me the years still been hugely successfull.

Next year, I still want to get to Anglia and hopefully, later in the year, that plan will come to fruition. Already plans are well on the way for the South West, believe it or not my accomadation is already booked, as June will see me embark on a 3 in 7, Freedom of the Severn and Solent. Hopefully sometime in January I have plans for either a day trip into Jock Rail territory again, depending on which Cats are on the Fife Circle or maybe up to Glasgow, for a roundabout ticket, however this could just as easily be just a days North East Round Robin, trying to clear up the NL stragglers I need. Also High on next years agenda, is the overnighter on Carlisle with Lord Tram, Laird Blindtraveller of Midlothian and the Skipper of Humberside, HMS Ark Royal and anyone else mad enough to want to join us on an overnight sojourn at the Citadel, will certainly be most welcome.

Lastly to everyone, may I wish you and your families, A Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Same to you :)

In addition to taking up casual spotting on commutes home, this year's provided some interesting new haulage experiences for me - although most of them were EMUs!

The fact I managed to persuade the other half to join me on the Chieftain and a railtour (trip reports to follow!) bodes well for the future...

Still a lot of trips to do, mind :)

Overnight at the Citadel sounds interesting

This year has been a bit of an odd one with me missing most of this year due to looking after my sick mother. I'd managed a few trips to London for the D Stock before it is withdrawn but that is nothing to write home about. My first real rover adventure came with the offer from Northern where I did a two day run around as much of the northern network as possible - the trip included coming face to face with 100,000 very upset Union members at Manchester!

After that, nothing really until a trip to Shirebrook left me cramped into a taxi after trains had been cancelled due to a fire further up the line. At over 6ft, I do not fit into the front seat of MPVs on a bumpy trip to Nottingham very well.

To use a nautical term, this year saw my Maiden Call to:

  • Nottingham
  • Sheffield
  • Shipley
  • Wakefield Westgate
  • Shirebrook
  • Worksop
  • Retford
  • Newark Newgate
  • Newark Castle
  • Lincoln

I hope to slide in another quick visit to London to get the last few D Stock that I need but, in the New Year, I plan to get either an ALR or a couple of 4-in-8 rovers and see what the future holds. Two thins I do plan on doing is being on the last Northern Rail service and also go to Newhaven Marine to take some pictures

Iv certainly been happy with what Iv got done this year, certainly more milage than for many years previous with the Heart of Wales, South Wales and large chunk of the great westen mainlines being a highlight. A worryingly expensive addiction to HS1 has developed, Iv finally ridden a 442 and covered 75 percent of Mersyrail as well as some cracking 37 and 68 action so yes v happy.

I have nothing to report for 2015 as I have been inactive on the haulage front since 1992. Since reading the trip reports I have renewed interest and cannot wait to start afresh come January. Therefore my plans for 2016 will consist of chasing stuff with an imminent end. I can think of D78 stock and 442's off the top of my head to begin with, assuming the latter haven't already succumbed? Suggestion's welcome.

Hi Ark Royal, yes I believe step entrance things are doomed come 2017. I am possibly unique in not particularly disliking these so much so chasing them will not be such a chore. I am handy for Manchester and Yorkshire so other than that I guess the North East and South West/Wales will need to be visited.

Ah, cheers for that. Not quite such urgency then, but I will certainly try and do as much as I can to avoid a last minute rush.

I think I might take a turn on the East Coast diversions down the Durham Coast one weekend in January. As a kid I used to gaze with childlike wonder and longing into the lamp lit splendour of the first class carriages of diverted East Coast HSTs as they trundled past the front of the house on the Durham Coast route. I always wanted to be one of those seemingly glamorous passengers gazing out instead of being on the outside looking in, but after all these years I've still never travelled on one of those diversions: So seeing as it costs me nowt to get up there and the HSTs are entering the twilight of their years on the ECML, now seems to be the best opportunity I'm going to get, and the day I spent travelling about on the Tyne Valley line diversions last month, after around a decade since I last did them, was fun.

I don't really plan train trips that far in advance, they just sort of fall into place, and though I travel around on trains a lot I don't often do it as an event in its' own right. I should think that I'll be doing my usual ****-up on the Severn Valley for my birthday, which possibly ties in quite neatly with their Spring Steam Gala, where their later evening train services mean that I don't need to worry about stopping drinking early and getting back down to Kiddy on the last train at teatime, which has been pretty touch and go once or twice, I can tell you.

I'd quite like to go to a Diesel Gala at some point in 2016, if one presents itself on a suitable weekend: I haven't been to one in years - generally I prefer steam if I'm visiting a heritage railway - and I always used to enjoy the days I spent at the North York Moors' diesel galas around a decade ago. Plus I get to spend a day staggering around in one of my best vintage Saxon/Rainbow t-shirts pretending that it's 1980. :D The East Lancs one looks promising - That's another thing that I've been promising myself for years but still haven't done, that I'd pay a visit to the East Lancashire Railway, so it seems like the perfect opportunity to tie the two things together, get up there and hit the pubs and the trains.

And as there's a floor for me to kip on up there then I'll probably take another turn on the Cumbrian Coast tractors at some point, seeing as they're there.

You don't sound very convinced. ;)

That sounds very pleasant and relaxing. :) Falmouth is great, and Newquay has it's charms: Though definitely wise to visit the latter in January when it is quiet and out of season.

Thats 3 of us who enjoy Pacers. Excillent! 47403 woant be happy though!
I'll raise my hand as a fourth. :D I think it's daft that they're still in squadron service thirty years after they were built, but on a sentimental level I have a grudging respect for them and I'll be sad to see them go: I've grown up with them, through all their various permutations and liveries, and they were a major part of my childhood. When I get into Pacer territory then I know that I'm heading home (unless I'm in Wales ;)).

Yeah, the Pacers have still got four years on the clock before they're gone (from the Northern franchise - not sure what will become of the ATW ones, but with quite a lot of secondhand diesel stock becoming available before the end of the decade it is conceivable that they will go, too, rather than have expensive DDA compliance modifications made to them).

Ok then! I have most definitely had a great year! 478 winners not including preserved stuff. And none of that is on a travel card!

Ha, I can't subscribe to that opinion, my favourite loco's. But then I like their 16-wheeled cousins too, unlike him!

Your right there Jay, unlike me indeed. Your entitled to your opinion, even though you know Im right ;):lol::lol::lol::lol:

One thing I will say about the 142,143 and 144's, is they were a damn sight better than the 141's, the original rail buses, anyone ridden any of those? I went to Harrogate from York and Knottingley from Leeds on one of them, after both journey's I felt sick, can you actually get sea sick on land, cos thats what it felt like. Mind thats the only positive I can find for pacers.

Laird Blindtraveller and Ark Royal, glad your both still up for the overnighter. Should be good fun.
Its actually nice to see the pacers are getting some admirers, hats off to you for showing them a bit love, however dont expect me to join you:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

I've achieved a lot since I resumed the hobby 13 months ago after a decade-long break since my early teenage years.

My coverage has improved massively, from this 13 months ago:

2cz4uc8.png

To this now- I appreciate I still have a lot to do:

2a4odhd.gif

On the loco front, I've scored new traction haulage on classes 57, 67 and 68 which leaves only 73's and 92's left that regularly (or will) work passenger trains on the mainline. I've also had 90 haulage and lots of 91, although not new.

For units, highlights have included new haulage on 180's, 168's, 322's, 350's

New coverage highlights include the ECML York-Aberdeen and Inverness which are both phenomenal, the WCML Carlisle-Glasgow, a lot of new FGW territory, the North Wales Coast, Cardiff-Chester, the Kyle line and the Tyne Valley line, which are all great routes.

New operators include LM, ATW, Chiltern, EMT (in its current guise), AGA, FGW/GWR and GC.

General highlights include:

- Lots of HST haulage
- Pullman dining on the way to Penzance
- Night Riveira, on my first sleeper run
- Class 67 on the North Wales Coast
- The Highland Chieftan
- The Northern Lights
- EMT's breakfast service.
- The Gerald Saga (broken down train, 3 trees hit etc...)
- Some great photo's (but also many bad ones :D )

Booked in the coming year I've got two railtours, one diesel and one steam, which I'm getting excited about as I've never done any long railtours. Also, my quest to dine on Gerald/the Premier Service has been re-booked and I've booked a trip on the Caledonian sleeper. I also intend to get some decent coverage of the lines radiating South of London as these are currently untouched.

All in all, a very enjoyable year.

I jokingly asked Northern what the "bribe" would be to diagram a pacer to do Hull - York or York - Hull (depending on where it starts from) all day and they replied a box of Chocolate cookies - that was at 08:45

At 0930, I sent a crate of them by registered mail

Nice map Iskra!
Where did you get the base map from?
You'll need to add The Borders Line now though.

I haven't done any new miles this year.
All I did was the tracks from Cleethorpes to Sheffield-Nottingham-Newark-Grimsby and Barton-Yorkshire Coast lines. Rail travel is close to unaffordable to me now.
I want to add myself to the Pacer fan list too. They're my all time favourite train, I'll pick one over Desiro anyday as at least you can open the windows which are larger too. Did the bribe to Northern work HMS Ark Royal?

On a none rail related note I'm happy as the local library near me has re-opened, that's the best community news alround, and I'm expecting a new nephew in a couple of days, these have made my Christmas.

I'd also like to know about that map

I do not know about the bribe yet as it only got despatched this morning to Northern. I jolly well hope it will work as I have been waiting 20 years to ride 142009

The base map is available here: http://www.southtpe.co.uk/rcv3.gif

I, myself, this year joined the league of trip reporters and took to the rails once or twice!
However I have only managed a paltry 205 winners for haulage. Considering everything was uncovered at the start of the year, I could have done better! 2016 will certainly hold much more (hopefully) with a London trip looking likely, and more of the North cranked.
I would just like to take this opportunity to say thanks to everyone on these forums for making it a remarkably enjoyable first year. Here's to the next one!

Firstly Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year to everyone on here. My year has been an interesting one.

I have only been back into this hobby seriously for the last 2 years after taking a sabbatical and now there is no stopping me. Going after trains for sighting, haulage and photography and copping stations on visits.

I had made major plans for this year at this time last year but after suffering a ankle injury at the beginning of the year I had to slightly alter my plans, saying that though it still hasn't been a bad year as you can see from my signature at the bottom it has been fruitful.

I have covered a lot of mileage with two days around Norwich and Ipswich with a couple of 47's working the Great Yarmouth service from Norwich, a couple of trips along HS1 on Class 395's, visiting Chiltern Trains to get haulage on some future classic locomotives in the form of Class 68's, my first ever trip along the Cumbrian Coast and to top that it was behind Class 37's (need to do that again next year) and finally two trips to Fort William, failed the first time to get up to the top of Ben Nevis so had to go back to do it, the second time I triumphed. What a line the west Highland line is, I've done some stunning lines on the Continent in the past and I have to say this line ranks up there with the best of them and on the first trip up there I did the Jacobite train and on the second trip to Fort William I had another first by travelling up over night on the sleeper service with a Class 90 and 67 for haulage.

Next year plans are already starting to take form. I have dates planned for trips but not decided as of yet where they will take me. Want to do a bit of time on the Southern Railway and South West Trains 455's as between them I think I still need 120+ for haulage, would like to knock off some more GWR 43's before they start to disappear and with the upcoming demise of the Pacers I would like to get my final dozen 142's over the next 12 months.

The only trip set in stone is on 1st February when I will be heading down London for the day to do some bashing on LU/DLR/TL hopefully.

First of all, sorry it's taken me almost 72 hours to get to this thread, work has been stressful and exhausting, so by the time I get home I do not have the patience to get online much. I'm days behind on my forum reading, but I intend to catch up later today. 37-40 hour weeks lately in December is proving, shall we say, challenging! Having appallingly bad data signal with 02 is not helping of course!

With that cleared up, Merry Frothmas and a Happy New Year to each and every one of you all, I hope 2016 is going to be a great year for all of us!

Some of you will have seen my Rolling Review 2015 thread, and my December post on it will be massive. Lots of stats and overviews of everything due to go live on there by New Year's Eve, although it may be slightly before then, pending circumstances of course. I shall link to my Rolling Review thread (it's in General Discussion) when I can next do so.

Lord Spoon Goon of the Tyne, I too am still interested in the all-nighter in Carlisle! I believe we're still looking at the spring for that, maybe the summer?

Congratulations on a good year and all the best for 2016!

I did a few new lines this last year during a 3 week visit to the UK in August/September with my Thai partner. I finally completed the Kyle line after my first attempt a few years back was interrupted by engineering works. I have plans for January and February to try my best to clear quite a few lines around the nation. Actually being resident abroad helps in that I get a remarkably cheap all line rover, especially being classed as a senior citizen, now being over 60. There are some benefits to being old and this is one of them. My aim is to clear what remains of my route coverage of Scotland, Wales, East Anglia, Lincolnshire and the North East. Then to wipe out as much of the London as possible in the remaining time and then if possible Manchester suburbs. Enclosed is my route coverage maps. BTW, I've never been one for the classes of haulage I've used. My excitement comes from route coverage. I've memorised every line (existing and now non- existent) from the age of 5-6 when I used the train to travel to school from Lelant to St Ives and journeys I made with my family to Penzance, Truro, and Plymouth. I've always found travelling by train exciting even in spite of problems both natural and un-natural that have been thrown in the way of my journeys. Still today, I find rail travel to be the most exciting, even though I must have flown the equivalent of to the moon and back 5 or 6 times.
