I've got a friend who has chosen to "protest" the carrier bag charge by deliberately using a competitor's bag for life e.g. ASDA bfl at Morrisons.
Wow, what a rebel.......

I now look on myself as a real daredevil, I've used our Waitrose bags in Sainsbury, Tesco, ASDA, Morrisons and even M&S, geez, am I cool or what ?, we've also used our insulated M&S bag in other shops as well![]()

I use Tesco bags in Poundland - well there's no way I'm paying £1 for a carrier bag.

Unless something has gone over my head here, why £1? Both Poundland and Poundworld are selling carrier bags here for 5p.
Because in Poundland everything costs £1 (yes, it did go over your head)

I've always used Waitrose bags everywhere. I won't be seen dead with a Tesco or ASDA bag, even at a recycling centre. Sometimes I use bags picked-up when on holiday, e.g. Wholefoods bags from the US, (about the only supermarket in the US that comes anywhere near Waitrose, M&S or even Sainsbury).

I on occasions shop at Aldi, particularly now one has opened very close to my house. The number of people who you see going in with Waitrose bags is definitely noticeable
As for Sainsbury's, I do occasionally use them, but they seem rather like a version of Tesco with less good stock control. I certainly notice no increase in quality from Tesco to Sainsbury's (but a substantially better quality at Waitrose, or its Northern brother[1] Booth's, which really *is* the king of supermarkets).
[1] Sort-of. Booth's is an independent family business. But it's said that if they ever flog up it will only be to the John Lewis Partnership, and Booth's and Waitrose do share a number of supply channels as they are very similar organisations in terms of the service provided, even if their structure is massively different.
Planning permission has been granted for a store on the site of the former Rushgreen Road service station but residents say they were led to believe the application was for a high-end supermarket.
They have launched a petition calling on the council to oppose the building of a Netto and to re-consult residents as it is not an upmarket supermarket as promised.
Living in a posh place (although not so much as the Sidorczuks, who wouldn't be seen dead in a 7 figure house), our local is a Booths. I was amused to read this story earlier this year though:

Thanks for that, I must try to visit one when travelling in the north-west. There isn't a free coffee or newspaper offer theough I assume.![]()

We even use our rigorously constructed Waitrose bags on our library visits, six or so hardbacks in a single bag, try that with a 5p carrier

To be fair the Aldi ones are the same (if you indeed mean the heavyweight bag for life type ones) and yes, they have lots of other uses other than putting shopping in them.

A strong Waitrose bag for life I had split a few weeks back and the replacement I was offered is a fraction of the thickness of the original. I put a few books in it at the weekend and a baby hole has appeared already.
As it was free (and it's replacement would be too) and not intended for carrying books (which tend to have sharp corners if they're hardback) there's not much to complain about, is there?
I actually put a few paperback books I was taking to a charity shop in an old M&S bag which had a rubbish handle and then put that bag inside the Waitrose bag for life to make it easier to carry. Last time I was in Waitrose I bought a multipack of cans which were heavier than the books put together!
Oh I see, in that case I suggest you complain to the chief executive of Waitrose and your MP. Incidentally did you find the bag adequate for carrying a multipack of cans?
Don't know about newspapers, but they do indeed do the same free coffee deal that Waitrose do (though obviously you need a Booths card for it). I did say they are similar!![]()

With regards to the charges for Carrier Bags, just be glad there isn't a Rail UK Supermarket, the bags would cost £4.42!
I think what we're learning on this thread is that some people really need to get a life.
Nope, cheap poor quality (previously free) ones would be £2.30, the bags for life would be £3.73, and the cloth bags (which would be semi recycled and not last a long as expected would be £4.42![]()
