Temporarily scrapped online

Advance fares missing 16th Jan
23rd Jan

Boxing Day to 4th Jan

So Day Save now only available at tourist centre is even more limiting with southerns continued scrapping off adsvance fares due to engineering works

Well considering the serious impact of these engineering works I can't say I'm surprised. They really don't want to encourage travel in that period when the main line is severed at Purley.

Absolutely absurd, I was thinking of doing a DaySave on Saturday 19th December, a normal Saturday. I'll do a bus day out or use one of my SWT free tickets instead. I've always said how poor Southern can be, but this takes the mickey.

Why should they offer special offer tickets which will mostly be used by people making discretionary journeys on days when they will have difficulty serving their full-fare-paying passengers who *have* to travel?

Advance tickets and the likes exist to fill empty seats. If there won't be any empty seats, none should be sold.

There are people who use it for longer journeys where it works out cheaper, some people don't like being restricted to specific trains, and I enjoy travelling the network because of the scenery. At least on a bus you don't know who is there for just a journey and who is there for a day out.

Possibly so, but I doubt many.

some people don't like being restricted to specific trains

Anytime and Off Peak fares remain available.

and I enjoy travelling the network because of the scenery.

So do I, but that is discretionary leisure travel.

I just tweeted Southern and they said it was because it was being moved onto a new system.

So which tourist centres is the southern daysave available from now?

Eastbourne, Brighton & Rye

So pretty much useless, but its Govia so I expect they will forget to put them back online and it will become like the Thameslink Daysave ticket and only available from those selected tourist offices.

(I was hoping to do one on the 12th December)

These advance fares should be scrapped altogether or honoured.

Why should I pay £8 more when advance fares are available the following sat when I dont need to travel?

The Daysave has been removed because I reported it took you to old site log in,they obviously screwed up launch of new site and overlooked it.

Or the average person books the £17.80 option thinking its a day save when it isnt!!!!

Because Advance fares exist at a discount to fill unused capacity. If there's no unused capacity, no Advance fares. Tough.

No but there are massive engineering works taking place massively reducing the capacity available to move the normal flow of people. So there isn't any unused capacity not because of more people but because of less capacity to move people.

See here.

It should be true, and I am in full support of Southern if they are implementing that policy at a time of limited capacity on their network.

On Southern, if you look where they introduced Advance tickets it's still clearly about revenue allocation first and market segmentation / price descrimination second.

I'm not going to say you're wrong, but I'm fed up of making the point that this is only one reason why they are used. In my view, this is a secondary reason in some cases and I think Southern is one of them. It's about switching market revenue into products that Southern get more money from. It's rather less about yield management.

I hope it is just a temporary arrangement as a I regularly make use of Daysave tickets when visiting the area.

Although now £93, I actually still find the 7 day version quite good value when visiting friends each summer in Purley. It gives me a reasonably priced opportunity (under £14 per day) of being able to travel from Purley down to Brighton and the south coast destinations and along as far as Portsmouth and Southampton or Hastings, Rye and Ashford. I can travel when I like, without being restricted to booked trains and also allows for a variation in routes as much as Southern allows. Another advantage is if I also want to go into London in the evenings I can make use of the same ticket without additional cost.

I hope that they return to the website very soon and continue to include the 7 day version.

I used to get advance fares when forced to get a bus at three bridges to Lewes..I see it as an excuse to scrap the advance fares although I get the point with less capacity to move people around they have to jog up the prices to get people to stay at home when engineering works

Agreed, useful as it sometimes is cheaper to buy a daysave than a day return for long distance routes into London, although I bet Govia will claim "nobody" is using the tickets on grounds to redraw them from use.

After-all you will need to be based in Rye, Hastings or Eastbourne to visit those tourist centres during their opening hours, attempt to buy the ticket, and use it.

Looks like purchasing at Rye tourist information is out, with Seaford & Lewes added to the tourist information where you can buy the ticket

Next week probably it will change again (was hoping Rye would have stayed as it would have given me something to do on Saturday when having an hour wait)

Has anyone heard any more about these tickets. They still do not seem to be available on the new style website. I'm beginning to think that they will not reappear and that Southern are hoping that people will just quietly forget that they ever existed.

This is really annoying because, as I said earlier, I regularly use them, especially the 7 day version, when I stay with friends in the area. I think it will be The Discovery Bus Ticket I use when I am there in a few months time if they don't reappear.

Very short odds on this being withdrawn in the future owing to low usage.

Even without low usage, the fact that there is only one company running trains between Brighton and London now should be enough for the economics of offering the daysave ticket to no longer make sense.

It would not surprise me if DaySave no longer offered a good business case given how the line between the TL/SN components are getting blurrier by the day. I just wish they would be more open about it should that be the case.

This has been an exceptionally long time for a ticket not to be available for "technical reasons".

Was the Daysave Ticket really marketed as a Southern Only ticket for travel between London and Brighton?
I certainly saw it more as being advertised as a Rover ticket to travel over the whole Southern Network. I certainly only used it as a Rover icket when staying in the South of England. It was useful to be able to travel from the South of London to all destinations along the South Coast from Ashford and Hastings along to Portsmouth and Southampton.

I was told that they were working on it coming back ASAP about a week ago. It'd be a shame to see it removed for good.

If it doesn't return get your self a photo id card and weekly seasons for Purley to Redhill £31.10 and Wye to Beaulieu Rd (via Barnham) for £63.90. Total £95.The Wye season ticket is valid at Redhill or along the coast, it will be most likely issued Route Polegate/ Edenbridge.
Doesn't cover Fratton to Portsmouth Harbour or some of the coastal branches but these are easily purchased on the train from Southern Guards. 99.9 % of Southern Guards will think that Wye is in Wales anyway and will be too embarrassed to query the ticket.
For maximum confusion get your Purley to Redhill season on the key smart card register the card for keygo for use on the branches and for trips in to London. This will confuse 99.9% of rail workers in the known universe.
