Virgin have started an extended promotion for MCFC "Cityzens". Expires at the end of August 2016.

Irrespective of your footballing affiliations, £35 gets you 25% off all off-peak advances (inc First) for up to two people travelling together.

For your 25% you do sacrifice any changes or refunds.

As blue season ticket holder, I think it's a great deal!

Great. More football fans on the trains. What joy.

Quite. I haven't been near a Virgin Train on a Saturday for nearly three years because of a particularly bad situation with football fans on a Euston - Preston service. They were completely beyond control, disgusting is probably a better word to describe them. Why Virgin encourages them is beyond me - well, no it isn't, but I just wonder how many decent folk who get caught up with them simply say 'never again'.

Wow - such vitriol!

I haven't been near the end of Platform five at Crewe for many weekends, for fear of running into a militant band of rail enthusiasts. The abuse I got the last time I accidentally stepped into somebodies shot was beyond belief. All this in front of children as well.

Moral:Don't tar everyone with the same brush. The majority of supporters of any group or hobby are reasonable, balanced, individuals. You will always encounter some at the extremes that you will remember.

You may not like some of the fans - get your own back by stealing the discount.

Because dog forbid that booking offices be involved in promotions so people can have their choice.

I'm a little confused by this.

It seems to only be open to season ticket holders or fan club members.

I used to avoid FCC at certain times on a Saturday because of football fans. I am aware that the vast majority are fine, but a minority are not - and they travel at the same times as the majority that are fine. We broke our journey on one occasion to avoid the violence on the train - unfortunately there were no staff around at all. In 3 years of commuting and socialising on that route I only observed one worrying incident that did not involve football fans.

I can understand where Aldaniti is coming from - they did not say they had a problem with all football fans.

Good to see, hope its rolled out for supporters of other clubs too, including on the East Coast.

I personally travel all over by train for football, but rarely see any trouble. In fact, one of the few times I've seen any trouble was when a Canadian Man City "fan" (of Asian appearance) hit a deaf Chelsea "fan" after the Chelsea fan racially abused the Man City fan. Was a strange situation to witness. Good job Leeds fans were there to intervene and hold the peace

I think the point is that if you buy a lot of VT Advances it is worth paying the £35 to join the fan club purely to get the discount, whether or not you have the slightest interest in football.

Correct - the break-even spend is £70 for couples, or £140 for an individual, if you need to buy into the supporters club. There's also 10% off Etihad flights, though that is a long shot for many.

I agree that the offer is useful for an individual who spends a lot on VTWC Advances and does not qualify for a national Railcard.

But a couple will find that a Two Together Railcard costs less than £35, has a discount greater than 25% and can be used with more train companies and for a greater range of ticket types.
