BBC: Paris shootings and explosions near Stade de France kill 18

There appears to have been one or more coordinated terrorist attack in Paris this evening. There are reports of gun fire and bomb explosions. BBC report at least 18 deaths.

EDIT: BBC now reporting perhaps 26 dead and 60 hostages taken at a concert venue

French police are now reporting 40 killed and I've seen a report that there were two suicide bombers outside the Stade de France. The hostage situation still seems to be active though a report, probably in error, said that French police had stormed the building.

My eldest son and his wife went to watch the game in the Stade de France tonight. They are on the pitch and they are safe. They heard explosions during the game but just assumed that it was high jinx outside the game. I missed their call and the call from Tim's Mum and had no idea until I checked the BBC web site a few minutes a go. This is awful.

With regards to the casualty figures, I'm afraid that the news channels are just playing stupid games, the reality is that they have no idea whatsoever of the numbers but always seem hell bent on making up figures to try and show they know something, it is most unfair on anyone who may have family in Paris this evening

They seem to reporting french police quotes - although it will be fast moving and changeable and the police spokesman may not know the true picture

Yes everything is still going on out there, hopefully it will end with the hostages being released safely, and without any more deaths.

There is a twitter hashtag going around (#PorteOuverte) which has people offering refuge in their homes for people caught on the streets of Paris.

Wow. I've been at the Somme all day and at Albert near the Western Front. Even at the Eurotunnel this hadn't been mentioned, so most likely a very recent thing.

Also, it's Friday the thirteenth. Not that I'm superstitious, but a strange coincidence...

The last Eurostar arrived on time at St Pancras at 2240. They have the train to Marseille scheduled to depart at 0719 Sat plus usual Paris Brussels departures. I assume they could be delayed/cancelled ; would people want to use Eurostar so soon ?

The shooters are still loose, apparently. No people have been arrested.

EDIT: At least 15 have been killed at the Bataclan - only about 200m from the former Charlie Hebdo buildings.

All sorts of rumours swirling around at the moment I've seen a report of gunfire near the Louvre as well as a shopping mall in addition to the attacks that have definitely occurred. Unsurprisingly it's a mess so don't believe anything you hear beyond what's been confirmed by Police so far!

The long standing involvement in France's former empire with the North African countries has left France with a large number of immigrants from those countries, which has had connotations in past events of terrorism. There is a very large percentage of young unemployed males in France from those areas.

Police have just confirmed one explosion was at one of the sets of entrance to the stade de France, kind of fortunate they were not a bit early or could have been much worse. The match had already kicked off so majority were safe inside the stadium

Closing the borders seems like an odd move really - I'm sure there are plenty of places in Paris that the shooters could hide for a long time. No doubt they have lots of support.

It would appear to be over. Nothing official appears to have been released regarding the results other than it's over and two attackers have been killed but all the unofficial stuff I'm reading does not sound good regarding casualties.
