Alright folks. Only a short hop but will be doing this journey either on the 8/11 or 9/11. Any advice for most likely loco hauled services, how much it will cost and it we get a basic return can we break the journey in Sopot? Wasn't sure what thread to put this in by the way so went with wanting loco hauled.

You should be able to get times and fares off the PKP intercity website. AFAIK all services are compulsory reservation even for the short distance.
Any TLK/IC/EIC but not EIP which are Pendolinos.The Regional and SKM trains will be MU.

I travelled on this very route a couple of weeks ago and looked into the possibilities of doing a hauled train or two. It was not possible to get a price from Gdansk to Sopot, as the journey is too short. I'm pretty sure it was possible to buy tickets for the full journey, without breaking at Sopot, though. I can't check right now, as the reservation system is on its nightly 90 minute shutdown!
If you are prepared to travel on units, a very good value ticket is the Metropolitan Ticket. I successfully purchased one from the SKM counters in the tunnel at Gdansk Glowny station. There is a good chance of carrying out this transaction in English. The SKM ticket machines also have an English option, but don't seem to sell these tickets, so you'd need to be there when the counters are open.
Metropolitan Tickets cost 20 PLN for 24 hours or 40 PLN for 72 hours and are valid "in all buses, trolleybuses and trams as well as SKM trains and trains of Przewozy Regionalne Regio (PR) within the area of the Metropolitan Public Transport Association of Gdansk Bay (MZKZG)." SKM trains call at many stations, but are frequent (at least every 15 minutes, even on a Sunday after 11:00), whilst the PR trains are less frequent, but a fair bit quicker. The units are quite interesting to travel on - quite a throwback, although there are many different ages of interior.
It is worth noting that the Metropolitan Ticket is not currently valid on the new train service to the airport. However, tickets only cost 3.50 PLN single, so it's no real hardship.
Finally, if you do go for a Metropolitan Ticket, don't forget to validate it! There are validation machines in the tunnel at Gdansk Glowny.

Many thanks for all the advice folks. Daft question, I am guessing with the multi day tickets you just validate the first time you use it? In the interest of my fellow travellers I guess we will just be using the local units as opposed to anything more exotic to be honest. Unless they are willing to indulge me. Ha ha.

Yes, the tickets are supplied undated, so you validate them the first time you board a bus, trolleybus or tram, or at the station if using a train for your first journey.
Once validated, that's it. No need to keep shoving them in validation machines, as they time & date stamp the ticket. They are valid for a full 24 or 72 hours, rather than just to end of service as would be the case in the UK.

Many thanks for the info, I don't suppose you could tell me what to ask for for a 72 hour ticket? I can say hello, goodbye, please, thank you etc. in Polish but I can't identify from the website what the ticket is called in Polish.

A validated 24 hour Metropolitan ticket (not mine!):
The 72 hour ticket looks pretty much identical.

The image I can see is an advertisement for a free web hosting service (cba.pl), not a ticket :cry:.
To be precise a Bilet metropolitalny komunalny does not include trains, for which you need a Bilet metropolitalny kolojewo-komunalny.

The linked image is a scan of such a ticket (honest!), but the hosting service may appear on screen - presumably an attempt at blocking hot-linking. Copy the address from Properties into another browser tab and the correct image should show. The ticket in the link is identical to the one I purchased.

Thanks for the help and advice chaps, in the end we got a day group ticket which cost 34 Zlotys for the 5 of us. We only got the local SKM service from Gdansk Glowny to Sopot and back but had a lovely time. I would have liked to have done more but it wasn't a really railway centric trip so I was happy to make do. 5th time I've been to Poland and I'm sure not the last.
