One of the 170's is outside on the fuel road north of Selhurst Depot, still as a 3 car unit.

Didn't catch the unit number as was on a passing train through Norwood Junction.

170422.

170423 has had vinyls cleaned and scotrail/first logo removed.......got a feeling they are gonna go into service like this. Two units have now been completed internally.

Is it just seat covers and carpets or have they done a propper job on them?

Seat covers, carpets, wall panels (in the same light blue as the 171s).. virtually the same as 171s but with the odd differences like grab handles on the seats.

Its 170422 currently near the fuel point at selhurst.

Also saw it this morning and tweeted to that effect.

They keep saying they are not coming until July, even if they are teasing us by bringing them out to be visible to the passing passengers.

It would be sensible to bolt one of the 3 cars on to the train that forms the last of the services up at the moment to make it a 5 or 7 (not sure if it is 2 or 4 at the moment). However it is the first and indeed only offpeak service at the moment so it would make sense to strengthen it. Mind you if it makes sense thats a good reason for them not doing it!

What's your Twitter handle? I saw nothing mentioned on Twitter this morning about 170s at Selhurst, so I assume I don't have you as a follower.

You can find me using @Techniquest2003

Yeh pretty sure they will be out before then, it's just they are saying whole project of the platform extensions and the 170s will be fully complete by July.

Here are a couple of pictures of 170422 in the depot from the weekend. One on Saturday morning on the fuel point and the others in the fog adjacent to the fuel point.

It is HIGHLY unlikely you will see these units in service without the full Class 171 conversion having been done etc.. You have to remember that GTR are very 'brand' focussed.

EDIT: Added a couple more pictures.

Even if they have been fitted with Dellner Couplers I dont think Class 170s are compatible with the 171s because of the Selective Door Opening arrangements.

no they are not as you say, but this wont be needed when all the platforms are extended. They could still run as 3s at the mo... or even 5s with a 171/7, or more if manually locked out.

Not sure how much work on things like fault diagnostics (MITRAC) needs doing to make them compatible.

Unless we are going to have a separate Marshlink fleet they will need SDO even when Uckfield line platforms are complete. I think the wiring is different on even 171/7s by the way.

You will need SDO for the times when 171s call at Riddlesdown, Woldingham, Lingfield, Dormans and any stations to which they are diverted (eg. to provide a diesel service in heavy snow). Remember 171s are also cleared to work via South Bermondsey and there are quite a few guards and drivers who sign the route and traction, so you will also need to ensure the correct number of doors can safely be released at all stations from Streatham to South Bermondsey inclusive. Obviously this route is only a diversion and mainly for ECS/emergencies, but it will become ridiculous if you ever need to call at the larger stations such as Tulse Hill, but can't because the SDO is dodgy...

Now I must admit that when that happens its extremely annoying. One of the benefits of the diesel is their ability in the snow, so what happens? They close the Uckfield line and take the stock elsewhere. If its our stock we should keep it in snow!

I'm just waiting for the point where Southern give up doing whatever they're doing and send the lot to Derby, from where they come back as 4 & 2 car 171s fitted with the same MITRAC and SDO system...

Hopefully the diesels will be a little less thin on the ground with the new units, even if it would mean short formations (preferable by a long way to cancellations).

Selhurst, Norwood and Eastbourne signing 171s and probably well over half the Southern network does mean that they can get sent to a fair few places. This helps the mainline, but does of course misbalance service to Uckfield!

selhurst drivers don't sign them, but their conductors work them. ??????

Sorry, yes - that's what I mean. Selhurst guards, Norwood drivers. Selhurst drivers only sign electric traction, of course (with the exception of some competency management).

The last very heavy snowfall they did some Victoria to Brighton and east croydon to East grinstead shuttles I believe and London Bridge to East croydon stopper

That's part of the plan IIRC.

Staying as 3 car units.
Still classes as 170s.
421-424 to remain south.
Rest to remain in Scotland on sublease.

Does anyone know when these 4 units will enter passenger service with Southern and what services will be strengthened??? From earlier posts it suggests only the Uckfield line will benefit...
