Incident at Sittingbourne (02/11)

Services through Sittingbourne have been suspended after a female fell onto the track, the full circumstances are unclear at the moment.

Replacement buses are running between Gillingham and Faversham and between Sittingbourne and Sheerness

From what I can gather she came into contact with the live rail and was taken to hospital in a serious condition. Apparently some onlookers had to be treated for shock.

I read that the 18 year old suffered what appeared to be a seizure before falling onto the tracks and coming into contact with the conductor rail. I believe the emergency isolation was requested by the driver of a nearby service who then tended to her. I hope she recovers as best as possible, thoughts with her and her family, all involved in what sounds harrowing.

My niece is epileptic and it's a constant dread in the family of something like this happening to her. She travels by train a lot too, but thankfully nowhere near 3rd rail operations.

Yes my daughter passed out on the tube probably as a result of skipping breakfast, thankfully no serious consequences and she said staff were fantastic, she bought them a box of Cadburys Roses the following day, they said it was a regular occurrence!

True. But it is no less a reminder of the danger of not being behind the yellow line. Which is more likely to result in ending up on the tracks - being behind the line or in front of it?

Having a son who suffers from Epilepsy I can state that if a person is having a fit there's no rolling involved. Just lying in one place and having stages that vary from being still through to the classic spasms and twitching. I wasn't there - I was stuck up the line at Rainham having been turfed off the 07.25 from St. Panhandle - but knowing what I do about epilepsy I'd say that almost certainly she was at the edge of the platform and simply pitched forward.
Why it took two hours to get her up and clear the line is worrying.

I witnessed an incident like this around 10 years ago. Like Phil described, the girl walked forward as the train arrived into the platform, she pitched forward and nose dived between the train and the platform. Luckily she didn't make it onto the track, but got caught on the frame underneath the train and was dragged along the platform for around 10 metres. Very luckily she survived and wasn't actually too badly injured, which was amazing considering what had happened. It was pretty shocking to witness though!

To this day I still can't work out how she didn't end up on the track in my case though. It was probably helped by her staying stiff while having the spasms. I work the Unit's involved now and sometimes look at them and just think how lucky she was. This incident is also partly why I usually have my head out coming into every station!

I did not mention the yellow line, rather, standing well back. If I had epilepsy, I would take great care to remain as far away from the platform edge(s) as possible. The further away, the less risk of falling on to the tracks.

It is with regret I have to tell you that I just read that the teenager has passed away.

I might be wrong but I thought the delay was police treating it as a crime scene until they could be certain that it wasn't?

Very sad news about the girl.
