Are class 08 and 09 Shunters the only classes of former BR Shunters still in operation? If so, which companies use them (not in preservation or private industrial sites).

Were the best part of 1000 built?

If you're trying to figure out the total, it's worth considering the near identical shunters built by EE for several of the big 4 prior to BR (both LNER & LMS had them, if memory serves, but possibly the others as well). They were also exported internationally.

Quite probably one of the world's most successful locomotives.

Nederlandse Spoorwegen definitely had some 08-alikes, and I think some very similar locomotives were built for industrial railways both at home and abroad. The last other shunter still in use were the 03s... Latterly 2 on the Isle of Wight, when both were retired from there one became the resident shunter at Hornsey EMU depot. It's still there but I don't think it's in use any more, just a "depot mascot".

Borderline on how you define it's location, but Arlington Fleet Services down in Eastleigh Works does still make use of the Class 07 - although Siemens has probably got more use out of it within the past few years or so as it has a removable dellner coupling attachment hooked onto it for shunting Desiros around.

Ireland had them as well. I think Australia had them but not sure.

All four of the pre-Nationalisation companies took them, with varying components built by themselves rather than EE. The LMS had the most, and indeed had quite a number by 1939, which went to the military, not all of which returned. Most of what appeared by numbering to have come from the four companies, however, were built to their orders after nationalisation but before the Class 08 was standardised.

The Class 08 were not actually assembled by EE, but all by a number of BR workshops, using EE engines and electrics - mostly. There were however some with Blackstone or Crossley engines, and with electrics by BTH and other manufacturers as well, so some locos which looked like an EE shunter had no EE content at all. All were numbered within the mainstream series so you had to be a bit of a rivet counter to know the differences - most of the oddballs were on the Eastern Region, and all were withdrawn by the time the TOPS numbering came along so there was no need to make a distinction.
