Leeds Station concourse and platform improvements

There are 5 'Spoons in Leeds and they all have slightly different pricing. Bizarre really!

One has just opened up in Meadowhell and charged £3.05 for the privilege of a pint of Carlsberg! Don't think the rent there is too cheap

I would guess the station McDonalds will be closed for a short while in the not too distant future to put in those fancy self service systems they've been rolling out.

Oh yes, the ones that on one uses !

Yes it is but not as nice I don't think. The Wetherspoon is indeed a great asset at LDS and other stations to have it and thank goodness they've not yet gone down the Airport route and made their station sites more expensive.

Au contraire, the one in Leeds station is much more expensive than any other Wetherspoons I have visited in Yorkshire. Think I paid at least £3.50 for a pint of Tuborg in there the other week when my local one does it for £2.49. Plus the food is more expensive too.

Didnt really have time to wander up Park Lane to the Becketts Bank, which is much cheaper.

Yes, it's true. The station approach pavements aren't fit for purpose, particularly the one towards Boar Lane. Unfortunately, it's difficult to see what they can do without removing the road. Perhaps they could turn this into a single lane one way bus lane to serve the interchange and remove the taxis to the Wellington concourse pick up point.

At least we have the Wellington Street concourse and entrance which is rather more fitting for a city like Leeds.

Couldn't they just close the walkways alongside the taxi rank entirely and use the exits down past 'spoons only? Leave those doors only for people wanting access to the taxis or buses?

When I used Leeds for commuting, I always used that entrance as it was much easier.

You'd have to walk a long way out of your way if you're heading towards Boar Lane. I suppose the pavement towards the front of the Queens Hotel wouldn't be such an issue.

The alternative is a third entrance by the footbridge over the c/d platforms but that would impact commerce through the main concourse.

why is there such unhappiness about a manky burger joint when you can walk to wetherspoons and get a decent if unspectacular burger AND a pint for better value?

From what I have read on certain other websites, when The Beerhouse was reopened under its new guise on Manchester Victoria railway station, it seemed to take the old motto from Stella Artois as its pricing structure...

McDonald's is also a million time cleaner and has a thousand times better, faster, efficient, American-style service. McDs is streets ahead of BK and KFC in the UK. It's embarassing how bad those two are! Every McDs has a staff member solely devoted to cleaning at all times.

My 'local' BK (well the one closest to work) is much better than the McD's as far as service is concerned. Must be the exception that proves the rule.

The removal of the three units in Leeds is just the start of the future of the redevelopment to the station. Bruntwood are to begin the external reclad of City House above the station. This will tie in with a link into the building from within the station itself (internal refits of the bui,ding have already been underway for some time). The plan according to Skyscraper City is that all rail operations will then be transferred into city house so that the existing crew offices can be removed to open up the station more. A mezzanine and glass roof will then be installed over the southerners concourse and hopefully more of the Art Deco northern concourse will be opened up where the existing ticket office is now.

As for outside, some buses are now already being rerouted away from the bus terminus outside the station in a trial. Eventually it maybe that only taxis will use new station street and a lot of the roadway will be pedestrianised.

It was also in the press this week that Leeds City Council are looking into pedestrianising the whole of City Square and Neville Street will be closed to cars in the future. How that will work I don't know but one rumour is that Neville St will become a bus terminal to replace the station with access down to it from New Station St.

Good to hear that the Leeds refurbishment is finally getting finished properly, after the half-cocked travesty that is the 1960s concourse has been left barely touched for 15 years!

Platform side there appears to have been someone round with a lot of yellow and purple paint - any special reason for that?

Also I did see a poster up mentioning much improved ticketing facilities arriving soon at the station though that is certainly the first I've heard on the matter!

Yes, I rather like the randomly coloured walls that have appeared. They certainly brighten the place up.

Of course, if they wanted a complete psychedelic experience, they should install trojan moquette in all of the trains.

Looks like green is being used. I think they're creating zones as the colours seem to be standard for platform infrastructure on each island

Ah. I've noticed a lime green one, a purple one and a mustard coloured one. Will be interesting to know what the colour scheme logic is.

Burger options are rapidly diminished, and nowhere to get a cheap cuppa !

The cheep cuppa thing is particularly galling as so many trains have no trolley and much as its a bitter pill, train tea is often now cheeper. Whilst I dont rate Mcdonalds the fact that I can still get a brew for under a £ is a biggy for me.
