So yeah... this has to be the first time that I've ever stood on the end of a platform with a camera with the intention of photting trains!

Be kind :p I know most of them suck. I'm not really sure on how to use the camera yet, so it was just set on auto the whole time.

Oh, and they have been resized quite badly I'm afraid.

They're very good, considering it was on auto setting. Once you get more used to the camera, experiment with all the settings untill you can find a perfect one. I have mine in natural (the one with the N), as it sets the ISO and all that. http://gizmogle.fotopic.net/p52251286.html that's gotta be my favourite out of all of them

Yeah. The problem with the auto mode is that everything was constantly going from light to dark depending on where the camera was facing and argh. Frustrating lol. It's also hard to focus on trains that are moving rather fast.

I'm sure I'll probably go out and give it another go sometime. Actually make a point of going photting this time, rather than just doing it on my way around.

Seems I just missed you on Thursday if your photo timestamps are correct (well, an hour anyway!)

Platform veg! :p

Not bad for a first attempt. You should definitely experiment with the other modes one you're used to the camera (sports or shutter priority are usually best for moving trains).

Ah. Looks like you were on the 1027 SHF - STP and I was on 1127 which got delayed at Chesterfield with rough riding issues then finally broke down at Wellingbrough and trundled in and terminated at Bedford an hour down :D

I've had a Fuji S9500 for a couple of years; some comments you might find useful about it are;

if the lighting conditions are anything less than near perfect, the results are more often than not absolutely dire

in auto mode, hideous overexposure is often a problem with the 9500 when you just point and shoot - it is much better to take control of the exposure yourself (aperture or shutter priority being easiest to manage) - take some test shots between trains, using the image info 'levels' graph to check for under / over exposure. Using either of these modes will also allow you to bracket exposures giving a much better chance of getting the exposure correct.

I find using the low contrast setting combined with high saturation tends to give better results than the 'standard' settings

any ISO setting above 200 is a waste of time, the images are simply too noisy unless the light levels are very low (dark!!) and long exposure times can be used.

Cheers for the comments.

Yes, I noticed the annoying over exposure thing. That messed up so many of the photos that I took. I wanted to just spend some time with it on auto just to get used to taking pictures with it.
I intend to use P mode once I get used to it. I do know how to change the exposure on P mode actually I think... Hmm...
I'm sure I'll have another go at this sometime :)

Thanks :D The auto mode on the S9500 does seem to be a little bit of an arse though.

I like your pictures :)

just out of interest, did this train terminate in platform 1, and passengers get shipped over to a 222 that arrived into three, if it was then i was on the station waiting to go home.

I still don't like it!

I'm gonna try and get Shauna to the top of the castle tomorrow

Sounds good, I can rack some skippage up 8)

Although you'll all have to play diesel sounds to me so all the buzzing won't go to my head ;)
